وَقَالَ ابْنُ دُرَيْدٍ: ثَقِفْتُ الشَّيْءَ حَذِقْتُهُ، وَثَقِفْتُهُ إِذَا ظَفِرْتَ بِهِ.

And Ibn Duraid said: I mastered the thing; and I captured it when you gained possession of it.

قَالَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: فَإِمَّا تَثْقَفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْحَرْبِ.

Allah the Almighty said: 'And if you gain mastery over them in the war'.

وَثَقِفَ الرَّجُلُ ثَقَافَةً أَيْ صَارَ حَاذِقًا خَفِيفًا.

And the man became skillful, meaning he became adept and quick.

فَفِي حَدِيثِ الْهِجْرَةِ: وَهُوَ غُلَامٌ لَقِنٌ ثَقِفٌ أَيْ ذُو فِطْنَةٍ وَذَكَاءٍ.

And in the hadith of Umm Hakim bint Abd al-Muttalib: 'I am chaste and do not speak, and I am skillful and do not err'.

وَثَقِفَ الْخَلُّ ثَقَافَةً وَثَقِفَ، فَهُوَ ثَقِيفٌ وَثَقِيفٌ، بِالتَّشْدِيدِ، الْأَخِيرَةُ عَلَى النَّسَبِ: حَذِقَ وَحَمُضَ جِدًّا مِثْلُ بَصَلٍ حَرِيفٍ.

And the vinegar became sharp and sour, so it is very sharp and pungent, like a pungent onion.

وَثَقِفَ الرَّجُلُ: ظَفِرَ بِهِ.

And the man was captured: he was defeated.

وَثَقِفْتُهُ ثَقْفًا مِثَالَ بَلَعْتُهُ بَلْعًا أَيْ صَادَفْتُهُ.

And I encountered him, like swallowing something whole, meaning I happened upon him.

فَإِمَّا تُثَقِّفُونِي فَاقْتُلُونِي.

Then if you capture me, then kill me.

فَإِنْ أُثْقِفْ فَسَوْفَ تَرَوْنَ بَالِي.
