قال أعرابي تبصروا الشيفان، فإنه يصوك على شعفة المصاد كأنه قرشام على فرغ صقر؛ يصوك أي يلزم، والمصاد الجبل، والقرشام القراد، والفرغ الإناء الذي يكون فيه الصقر، وهو الدوشاب
An Arab said: Observe the falcons, for it clings to the mountain peak like a tick on a falcon's perch; 'yasūku' means clings, 'al-miṣād' is the mountain, 'al-qurshām' is the tick, and 'al-fargh' is the vessel in which the falcon is kept, and it is the syrup-container.
وقوس فرغ وفراغ: بغير وتر
And a bow without a string, and a bow without a string: without a string.
وقيل: بغير سهم
And it was said: without an arrow.

Abu Kabir said: I passed it with a track, you would think it was its trace ... a path, clear in this wide, cultivated land.
وفراغ عواري الليط، تكسى ظباتها ... سبائب، منها جاسد ونجيع
And wide arrowheads of fine wood, their tips are covered ... with blood, some clotted and some flowing.
سنفرغ لكم أيه الثقلان
We shall attend to you, O you two weighty ones.
قال ابن الأعرابي: أي سنعمد، واحتج بقول جرير: ولما اتقى القين العراقي باسته، ... فرغت إلى العبد المقيد في الحجل
Ibn al-A'rabi said: meaning we shall attend, and he cited the verse of Jarir: And when the Iraqi blacksmith guarded his private parts, ... I turned to the chained slave in fetters.
قال: معنى فرغت أي عمدت
He said: the meaning of 'faraghtu' is 'I intended'.
وفي حديث أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه: افرغ إلى أضيافك أي اعمد واقصد، ويجوز أن يكون بمعنى التخلي والفراغ لتتوفر على قراهم والاشتغال بهم
And in the hadith of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him: 'Attend to your guests' meaning intend and aim, and it may mean to make oneself free and available to attend to their hospitality and engage with them.

And a sharp arrow: made of iron.
وفرس فريغ: واسع المشي
And a horse that is wide-striding: wide in its gait.
وقيل: جواد بعيد الشحوة
And it was said: a noble horse with a long stride.
ويكاد يهلك في تنوفته شأو ... الفريغ، وعقب ذي العقب
And he almost perishes in his distant journey, the stride ... of the wide-going horse, and the track of the one who follows.
وهملاج فريغ: سريع أيضا؛ عن كراع، والمعنيان مقتربان
And a fast-moving horse, also fast; according to Kara', and the two meanings are close.
وفرس مستفرغ: لا يدخر من حضره شيئا
And a horse that exerts itself fully: it spares nothing of what it has.
ورجل فراغ: سريع المشي واسع الخطاء، ودابة فراغ السير كذلك
And a man who is fast: quick in walking and wide in stride, and a beast that is fast in its gait likewise.
وفي الحديث: أن رجلا من الأنصار قال: حملنا رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، على حمار لنا قطوف فنزل عنه فإذا هو فراغ لا يساير أي سريع المشي واسع الخطوة
And in the hadith: A man from the Ansar said: We mounted the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, on our donkey, which was slow, and he dismounted, and it was a fast-walker, not keeping pace, meaning quick in walking and wide in stride.
وفرغ عليه الماء وأفرغه: صبه؛ حكى الأول ثعلب؛ وأنشد
And he poured water on him and poured it out: he poured it; Tha'lab narrated the first; and he recited:
فرغن الهوى في القلب، ثم سقينه ... صبابات ماء الحزن بالأعين النجل
Pour love into the heart, then water it ... with the flowing tears of sorrow from the wide eyes.
ربنا أفرغ علينا صبرا*
Our Lord, pour upon us patience*
أي اصبب، وقيل: أي أنزل علينا صبرا يشتمل علينا، وهو على المثل
Meaning pour, and it was said: meaning send down upon us patience that encompasses us, and it is by analogy.
وافترغ: أفرغ على نفسه الماء وصبه عليه
And he poured for himself: he poured water on himself and cast it upon him.
وفرغ الماء، بالكسر، يفرغ فراغا مثال سمع يسمع سماعا أي انصب، وأفرغته أنا
And water flowed, with a kasra, it flows a flowing, like 'sami'a' hears a hearing, meaning it poured out, and I poured it.
كان يفرغ على رأسه ثلاث إفراغات ، وهي المرة الواحدة من الإفراغ
He used to pour over his head three pourings, and it is one instance of pouring.
يقال: أفرغت الإناء إفراغا وفرغته تفريغا إذا قلبت ما فيه
It is said: You emptied the vessel completely, and you emptied it by pouring, if you overturned what was in it.

ومفرغ الدلو: ما يلي مقدم الحوض

والمفرغ والفرغ والثرغ: مخرج الماء من بين عراقي الدلو، والجمع فروغ وثروغ
And al-mafarragh, and al-fargh, and al-thirgh: the exit of water from between the bucket's handles, and the plural is furoogh and thuroogh.
وفراغ الدلو: ناحيتها التي يصب منها الماء؛ وأنشد
And the side of the bucket: its side from which water is poured; and he recited:
تسقي به ذات فراغ عثجلا

وكأن شدقيه، إذا تهكما، ... فرغان من غربين قد تخرما
And as if its jaws, when it gaped, ... were two wide openings from two buckets that had been emptied.
قال: وفرغه سعة خرقه، ومن ذلك سمي الفرغان
He said: And its opening is the width of its hole, and from this, al-farghān were named.
وهما فرغان منزلان في برج الدلو: فرغ الدلو المقدم، وفرغ الدلو المؤخر، وكل واحد منهما كوكبان نيران، بين كل كوكبين قدر خمس أذرع في رأي العين
And they are two mansions, two stations in the sign of Aquarius: the front star of Aquarius, and the rear star of Aquarius, and each of them is two fiery stars, with a distance of about five cubits between each pair of stars in visual estimation.
والفراغ: الإناء بعينه؛ عن ابن الأعرابي

التهذيب: وأما الفراغ فكل إناء عند العرب فراغ
Al-Tahdhib: As for al-farāgh, every vessel among the Arabs is called farāgh.
والفرغان: الإناء الواسع

والفراغ: الأودية؛ عن ابن الأعرابي ولم يذكر لها واحدا ولا اشتقها

قال ابن بري: الفرغ الأرض المجدبة؛ قال مالك العليمي: أنج نجاء من غريم مكبول، ... يلقى عليه النيدلان والغول واتق أجسادا بفرغ مجهول
Ibn Barrī said: Al-fargh is barren land; Malik al-'Alīmī said: Escape a desperate escape from a chained debtor, ... upon whom are cast the demons and the ghouls, and beware of bodies in an unknown barren land.
