Zaagha yazeeghu zeighan, zeighanan, zuyughan, zeighughatan, and I caused it to deviate (azaaghatuhu izaghah), and he is a deviator from a people who deviate: he inclined.

وقوله تعالى: ربنا لا تزغ قلوبنا بعد إذ هديتنا ؛ أي لا تملنا عن الهدى والقصد ولا تضلنا

And His saying, the Almighty: 'Our Lord, do not let our hearts deviate after You have guided us'; meaning, do not turn us away from guidance and the right path, nor lead us astray.

يقال: زاغ عن الطريق يزيغ إذا عدل عنه.

It is said: 'He deviated from the road' (yazeeghu) if he turned away from it.

وفي حديث أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه: أخاف إن تركت شيئا من أمره أن أزيغ أي أجور وأعدل عن الحق

And in the hadith of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him: 'I fear if I leave anything of his command that I would deviate', meaning I would err and turn away from the truth.

وحديث عائشة: وإذ زاغت الأبصار أي مالت عن مكانها كما يعرض للإنسان عند الخوف.

And the hadith of Aisha: 'And when the eyes deviated' meaning they turned from their place as happens to a person when afraid.

وأزاغه عن الطريق أي أماله.

And He caused him to deviate from the road (azaagahu) means He inclined him.

وزاغت الشمس تزيغ زيوغا، فهي زائغة: مالت وزاغت، وكذلك إذا فاء الفيء؛ قال الله تعالى: فلما زاغوا أزاغ الله قلوبهم.

And the sun deviated (tazeeguh) zuyughan, it is deviating (zaa'ighah): it inclined and deviated, and likewise when the shadow returns; Allah the Almighty said: 'So when they deviated, Allah caused their hearts to deviate.'

أبو سعيد: زيغت فلانا تزييغا إذا أقمت زيغه، قال: وهو مثل قولهم تظلم فلان من فلان فظلمه تظليما.

Abu Sa'id said: 'I corrected his deviation' (zayyaghtu fulanan tazyeighan) if you straightened his crookedness, he said: 'And it is like their saying: So-and-so complained of injustice from so-and-so, and he wronged him unjustly (ẓalamahu taẓlīman).

والزاغ: هذا الطائر، وجمعه الزيغان؛ قال الأزهري: ولا أدري أعربي أم معرب.

And az-zaagh: this bird, and its plural is az-ziyaghan; Al-Azhari said: 'And I do not know if it is Arabic or borrowed.'

وتزيغت المرأة تزيغا مثل تزيقت تزيقا إذا تزينت وتبرجت وتلبست كتزينت؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.
