راغ يروغ روغا وروغانا: حاد.
He deviated, he deviates, deviation and deviation: he swerved.
وراغ إلى كذا أي مال إليه سرا وحاد.
And he inclined towards something, meaning he secretly moved towards it and swerved.
وفلان يراوغ فلانا إذا كان يحيد عما يديره عليه ويحايصه.
And so-and-so evades so-and-so when he avoids what he is steering him towards and maneuvering him into.
وأراغه هو وراوغه: خادعه.
And he deceived him and he tricked him.
وراغ الصيد: ذهب هاهنا وهاهنا، وراغ الثعلب.
The game moved here and there, and the fox moved here and there.
وفي المثل: روغي جعار وانظري أين المفر، وجعار اسم الضبع، ولا تقل روغي إلا للمؤنث، والاسم منه الرواغ، بالفتح.
And in the proverb: 'O female fox, Juaar, and look where the escape is,' and Juaar is the name of the hyena, and you do not say 'rooghi' except to a female, and the noun from it is 'ar-rawagh', with a fatha.
وأراغ وارتاغ: بمعنى طلب وأراد.
And 'araagha' and 'irtaagha': meaning sought and desired.
تقول: أرغت الصيد، وماذا تريغ أي ما تريد وتطلب.
You say: 'I sought the game,' and 'What do you seek?' meaning what do you want and desire.
وفلان يريغ كذا وكذا ويليصه أي يطلبه ويديره؛ وأنشد الليث: يديرونني عن سالم وأريغه، ... وجلدة بين العين والأنف سالم
And so-and-so seeks such-and-such and maneuvers it, meaning he seeks it and steers it; and Al-Layth recited: 'They steer me away from Salim and I seek it,' ... and a skin between the eye and the nose is Salim.
وتقول للرجل يحوم حولك: ما تريغ أي ما تطلب.
And you say to a man hovering around you: 'What do you seek?' meaning what do you want.
وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه، أنه سمع بكاء صبي فسأل أمه فقالت: إني أريغه على الطعام أي أديره عليه وأريده منه.
And in the narration of Umar, may God be pleased with him, he heard the crying of a child and asked his mother, and she said: 'I am seeking it for food,' meaning I am steering it towards it and wanting it from him.
ويقال: فلان يريغني على أمر وعن أمر أي يراودني ويطلبه مني؛ ومنه حديث قيس: خرجت أريغ بعيرا شرد مني أي أطلبه بكل طريق.
And it is said: 'So-and-so seeks something from me and about something,' meaning he is tempting me and asking it from me; and from this is the narration of Qais: 'I went out seeking a camel that had strayed from me,' meaning I sought it by every way.
ومننه روغان الثعلب، وفلان يراوغ في الأمر مراوغة، وتراوغ القوم أي راوغ بعضهم بعضا.
And from this is the cunning movement of the fox, and so-and-so evades in the matter with evasion, and the people dodged each other, meaning some of them dodged others.
وراء فلان إلى فلان أي مال إليه سرا؛ ومنه قوله تعالى: فراغ إلى أهله فجاء بعجل سمين ، وقال تعالى: فراغ عليهم ضربا باليمين ؛ كل ذلك انحراف في استخفاء، وقيل: أقبل، وقال الفراء في قوله فراغ إلى أهله : معناه رجع إلى أهله في حال إخفاء منه لرجوعه، ولا يقال للذي رجع قد راغ إلا أن يكون مخفيا لرجوعه.
And so-and-so inclined towards so-and-so, meaning he secretly moved towards him; and from this is His saying, the Almighty: 'Then he went stealthily to his family and came with a roasted calf,' and His saying, the Almighty: 'Then he fell upon them with a strike by the right hand;' all of that is deviation in secrecy, and it was said: he approached, and Al-Farra' said regarding His saying 'faraagha ila ahlihi': its meaning is he returned to his family in a state of secrecy about his return, and it is not said of one who returned that he 'raagha' unless he concealed his return.
وقال في قوله فراغ عليهم : مال عليهم وكأن الروغ هاهنا أي أنه اعتل عليهم روغا ليفعل بآلهتهم ما فعل.
And he said regarding His saying 'faraagha 'alayhim': he inclined towards them, and it is as if the deviation here means he approached them with deviation to do to their gods what he did.
وطريق رائغ: مائل.
And a deviating path: slanting.
وفي حديث الأحنف: فعدلت إلى رائغة من روائغ المدينة أي طريق يعدل ويميل عن الطريق الأعظم.
And in the narration of Al-Ahnaf: 'So I turned to a side path from the side paths of the city,' meaning a path that turns and deviates from the main road.
قال: ومنه قوله تعالى فراغ عليهم ضربا ، أي مال وأقبل.
He said: 'And from this is His saying, the Almighty, 'faraagha 'alayhim darban', meaning he inclined and approached.
ورواغة القوم ورياغتهم: حيث يصطرعون.
And the wrestling ground of the people and their wrestling place: where they wrestle.
ويقال: هذه رياغة بني فلان ورواغتهم أي حيث يصطرعون، وأصله رواغة صارت الواو ياء للكسرة قبلها.
And it is said: 'This is the wrestling ground of the children of so-and-so and their wrestling place,' meaning where they wrestle, and its origin is 'rawagha', the waw became a yaa due to the kasra before it.
والمراوغة: المصارعة.
And 'al-muraawagha': wrestling.
وروغ لقمته في الدسم: غمسها فيه كرولها.
He dipped his morsel in the fat: he submerged it in it like rolling it.
وفي الحديث: إذا كفى أحدكم خادمه حر طعامه فليقعده معه وإلا فليروغ له لقمة أي يطعمه لقمة مشربة من دسم الطعام.
And in the narration: 'If one of you suffices his servant with the heat of his food, let him sit him with him, otherwise let him dip a morsel for him,' meaning let him feed him a morsel soaked in the fat of the food.
يقال روغ فلان طعامه ومرغه وسغبله إذا رواه دسما.
It is said: 'So-and-so dipped his food, and smeared it, and seasoned it,' if he enriched it with fat.
وتروغ الدابة في التراب: تمرغ «1».
And the animal rolled in the dust: it wallowed.
