المشرف من الأرض والجبل، وقيل: هو قطعة منهما فيها غلظ
The elevated part of the land and the mountain, and it is said: it is a piece of them with ruggedness.
وأصبح سيل ذلك قد ترقى ... إلى من كان منزله يفاعا
And the flood of that had risen... to where his dwelling was an elevated place.
وقيل: هو التل المشرف، وقيل: هو ما ارتفع من الأرض
And it is said: it is the prominent hill, and it is said: it is what is elevated from the earth.
وجاء في جمعه يفوع
And its plural came as 'yufūʿ'.
بنظرة أزرق العينين باز، ... على علياء، يطرد اليفوعا
With a glance of a blue-eyed falcon, ... on a height, chasing the elevated places.
والميفع: المكان المشرف
And 'al-mīfaʿ': the elevated place.
وفي كل نشز لها ميفع، ... وفي كل وجه لها مرتعى
And in every high ground she has a high place, ... And in every direction she has a pasture.
والميفع: المكان المشرف؛ وقول حميد بن ثور يصف ظبية: وفي كل نشز لها ميفع، ... وفي كل وجه لها مرتعى ورواه ابن بري: لها منتصى، فسره المفسر فقال: ميفع كيفاع، قال ابن سيده: ولست أدري كيف هذا لأن الظاهر من ميفع في البيت أن يكون مصدرا، وأراه توهم من اليفاع فعلا فجاء بمصدر عليه، والتفسير الأول خطأ؛ ويقوي ما قلناه قوله: وفي كل وجه لها مرتعى
And 'al-mīfaʿ': the elevated place; and the saying of Ḥumayd ibn Thawr describing a doe: 'And in every high ground she has a high place, ... And in every direction she has a pasture.' Ibn Barrī narrated it as: 'she has a refuge,' and the explainer interpreted it saying: 'mīfaʿ' is like 'yifāʿ'. Ibn Sīdah said: 'And I do not know how this is, because the apparent meaning of 'mīfaʿ' in the verse is to be a مصدر (verbal noun), and I think he imagined 'al-yifāʿ' as a verb and brought a مصدر based on it, and the first interpretation is wrong; and his saying: 'And in every direction she has a pasture' strengthens what we said.
واليافع: ما أشرف من الرمل
And 'al-yāfiʿ': what is elevated from the sand.
تنفي الطوارف عنه دعصتا بقر، ... ويافع من فرندادين ملموم
She brushes off the scattered sand from them, two cow-like dunes, ... and a rounded elevated dune of fine sand.
وكل شيء مرتفع، فهو يفاع، وقيل: كل مرتفع يافع
And everything elevated, it is 'yifāʿ', and it is said: everything elevated is 'yāfiʿ'.
فأشعرته تحت الظلام، وبيننا، ... من الخطر المنضود في العين، يافع
So I made him aware under the darkness, and between us, ... from the piled danger in the eye, elevated.
ما رجائي في اليافعات ذوات الهيج ... أم ما صيري، وكيف احتيالي؟
What hope do I have in the dominant matters of strife ... or what is my fate, and how is my stratagem?
قال: اليافعات من الأمر ما علا وغلب منها.
He said: 'al-yāfiʿāt' are from the matters that are high and dominant.
وتيفع الرجل: أوقد ناره في اليفاع أو اليافع
And 'tayaffaʿa al-rajul': he lit his fire in the elevated place or on the high dune.
إذا حان منه منزل القوم أوقدت ... لأخراه أولاه سنى وتيفعوا
When the resting place of the people came for him, she lit ... so that its latter part lit up its former part, and they lit fires in high places.
وغلام يافع ويفعة وأفعة ويفع: شاب، وكذلك الجمع والمؤنث، وربما كسر على الأيفاع فقيل غلمان أيفاع ويفعة أيضا.
And a young boy, and a young girl, and 'afʿah', and 'yifʿ': a youth, and likewise the plural and feminine, and sometimes it is broken into 'ayfāʿ', so it is said 'ghilmān ayfāʿ' and 'yufʿah' also.
وقد أيفع أي ارتفع، وهو يافع على غير قياس، ولا يقال موفع، وهو من النوادر
And he has 'ayfaʿa', meaning he became elevated, and he is 'yāfiʿ' irregularly, and one does not say 'mūfaʿ', and it is among the rare instances.
ونظيره أبقل الموضع وهو باقل كثر بقله، وأورق النبت وهو وارق طلع ورقه، وأورس وهو وارس كذلك، وأقرب الرجل وهو قارب إذا قربت إبله من الماء، وهي ليلة القرب؛ ونظير هذا، أعني مجيء اسم الفاعل على حذف الزوائد، مجيء اسم المفعول على حذفها أيضا نحو أحبه فهو محبوب، وأضأده فهو مضؤود ونحوه.
And its parallel is: the place became 'abqal' (abundant in clover) and it is 'bāqil' (abundant in clover) because its clover is abundant; and the plant became 'awraq' (leafy) and it is 'wāriq' (leafy) because its leaves appeared; and it became 'awras' and it is 'wāris' likewise; and the man became 'aqrab' (close to water) and he is 'qārib' (close to water) when his camels approach the water, and it is the night of 'al-qurb'; and a parallel to this, meaning the coming of the active participle with the deletion of extra letters, is the coming of the passive participle with their deletion as well, such as 'aḥabbahu fa-huwa maḥbūb' (I loved him, so he is loved), and 'aḍḍadtu-hu fa-huwa maḍḍūd' (I opposed him, so he is opposed) and the like.
والقياس موفع وجمعه أيفاع.
And the standard form is 'mūfaʿ' and its plural is 'ayfāʿ'.
وتيفع الغلام: كأيفع؛ وجارية يفعة ويافعة وقد أيفعت وتيفعت أيضا.
And 'tayaffaʿa al-ghulām': like 'ayfaʿa'; and a young girl 'yufʿah' and 'yāfiʿah', and she has 'ayfaʿat' and 'tayaffaʿat' also.
وقد أيفع أو كرب
And he had approached maturity or was about to.
أيفع الغلام فهو يافع إذا شارف الاحتلام
The boy has 'ayfaʿa', so he is 'yāfiʿ' when he nears puberty.
واليفاع المرتفع من كل شيء
And 'al-yifāʿ' is the elevated part of everything.
ويافع فلان أمة فلان ميافعة: فجر لها
So-and-so had illicit relations with so-and-so's slave woman, 'miyāfaʿah': he fornicated with her.
ولا ولد الميافعة
Nor the child of fornication.
