Al-Layth said: 'Al-hayma'u', with the ya and mim before the 'ayn, means sudden death.
وذبحه ذبحا هيمعا أي سريعا
And he slaughtered him a slaughter 'hayma'an', meaning swiftly.
سمعت الأصمعي يقول الهميع الموت
I heard Al-Asma'i say: 'Al-humi'u' is death.
من الموت، بالهميع الذاعط
From death, with the 'al-humi'i' the swift.
واهتمع لونه وامتقع لونه بمعنى واحد
And his color 'ihtama'a' and his color 'imtaqa'a' have one meaning.
همع رأسه، فهو مهموع إذا شجه
He wounded his head ('hama'a ra'sahu'), so he is 'mahmu'' if he has a gash.
