والهلوع: الذي يفزع ويجزع من الشر
And al-halū'u: is one who panics and becomes distressed by evil.
رجل هلوع إذا كان لا يصبر على خير ولا شر حتى يفعل في كل واحد منهما غير الحق
A man is halū' if he does not have patience with good or evil until he does what is not right in each of them.
ولي قلب سقيم ليس يصحو، ... ونفس ما تفيق من الهلاع
And I have a sick heart that does not recover, ... and a soul that does not awaken from its impatience.
من شر ما أعطي المرء شح هالع وجبن خالع
Among the worst things a person is given is grievous stinginess and a heart-rending cowardice.
أي يجزع فيه العبد ويحزن كما يقال: يوم عاصف وليل نائم
Meaning the servant becomes impatient and sad in it, as it is said: a stormy day and a sleeping night.
وهلع هلعا: جاع
And he was haliq halaqan: he was hungry.
والهلع والهلاع والهلعان: الجبن عند اللقاء
And al-hala'u, al-hilā'u, and al-hal'ān: are cowardice at the time of meeting.
رجل هلعة مثل همزة إذا كان يهلع ويجزع ويستجيع سريعا
A man is haliqah like hamazah if he is quick to panic, become distressed, and become fearful.
