وهطع وأهطع: أقبل مسرعا خائفا لا يكون إلا مع خوف،
And haṭa'a and ahṭa'a: to approach quickly, fearfully, which only occurs with fear,
وقيل: مد عنقه وصوب رأسه،
And it was said: he extended his neck and lowered his head,
وقال الليث: بعير مهطع في عنقه تصويب خلقة.
And Al-Layth said: A muhṭi' camel has its neck bent by nature.
يقال للرجل إذا أقر وذل: أريخ وأهطع؛
It is said of a man when he admits and is humbled: he is 'arīkh and 'ahṭa'a;
تعقدني نمر بن سعد، وقد أرى ... ونمر بن سعد لي مطيع ومهطع
Numayr ibn Sa'd obeys me, and I see... and Numayr ibn Sa'd is obedient and submissive to me
وقوله مهطعين إلى الداع فسر بالوجهين جميعا؛
And his saying 'muhṭi'īn ilā al-dā'i' was interpreted with both meanings;
بدجلة أهلها، ولقد أراهم، ... بدجلة، مهطعين إلى السماع
In the Tigris, its people, and indeed I see them, ... in the Tigris, looking intently towards the sound
وفي حديث علي، عليه السلام: سراعا إلى أمره مهطعين إلى معاده ؛
And in the hadith of Ali, peace be upon him: hastening to his command, looking intently towards his return;

And a hayṭa' road: wide.
وقال شمر: لم أسمع هاطعا إلا لطفيل وهو الناكس،
And Shamir said: I have not heard 'hāṭi'an' except from Tufayl, and it means looking down,
وقيل: المهطع الساكت المنطلق إلى الهتاف إذا هتف هاتف،
And it was said: Al-muhṭa' is the silent one who proceeds to a call when a caller calls,
والإقناع رفع الرأس في اعوجاج في جانب مثل الجانف،
And al-iqnā' is raising the head with a bend to the side like al-jānif,
والجانف الذي يعدل في مشيته،
And al-jānif is one who leans to the side in his gait,
