It is said: a female donkey anxious for her foal, Al-Asma'i said: meaning anxious of heart, and she is one who seems frantic from fear;
وَفِي حَدِيثِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ: إِنِّي لَأَجِدُ لَهُ مِنَ اللَّائِعَةِ مَا أَجِدُ لِوَلَدِي ؛
And in the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud: I feel for him the burning distress that I feel for my child;
اللَّائِعَةُ وَاللَّوْعَةُ: مَا يَجِدُهُ الإِنْسَانُ لِوَلَدِهِ وَحَمِيمِهِ مِنَ الحُرْقَةِ وَشِدَّةِ الحُبِّ.

وَرَجُلٌ لَاعٌ وَلَاعٌ: حَرِيصٌ سَيِّءُ الخُلُقِ جَزُوعٌ عَلَى الجُوعِ وَغَيْرِهِ، وَقِيلَ: هُوَ الَّذِي يَجُوعُ قَبْلَ أَصْحَابِهِ، وَجَمْعُ اللَّاعِ أَلْوَاعٌ وَلَاعُونَ.
And a man is 'laa'' and 'laa'': greedy, ill-tempered, impatient with hunger and other things, and it was said: he is one who gets hungry before his companions, and the plural of 'laa'' is 'alwaa'' and 'laa'uun'.
وَامْرَأَةٌ لَاعَةٌ، وَقَدْ لَعَتْ لَوْعًا وَلَاعًا وَلَوَّعَا كَجَزِعَتْ جَزَعًا؛ حَكَاهَا سِيبَوَيْهِ.
And a woman is 'laa'ah', and she experienced distress and impatience, as she experienced impatience; Sibawayh narrated it.
وَقَالَ مَرَّةً: لَعَتْ وَأَنْتَ لَائِعٌ كَبِعْتَ وَأَنْتَ بَائِعٌ، فَوَزْنُ لَعَتْ عَلَى الأَوَّلِ فَعَلَتْ وَوَزْنُهُ عَلَى الثَّانِي فَعَلَتْ.
And he said once: 'la'at' and you are 'laa'i'' like 'bi'ta' and you are 'baa'i'', so the weight of 'la'at' according to the first is 'fa'alat' and its weight according to the second is 'fa'alat'.
وَرَجُلٌ هَاعٌ لَاعٌ: فَهَاعٌ جَزُوعٌ، وَلَاعٌ مُوجَعٌ؛ هَذِهِ حِكَايَةُ أَهْلِ اللُّغَةِ، وَالصَّحِيحُ مُتَوَجِّعٌ لِيُعَبِّرَ عَنْ فَاعِلٍ بِفَاعِلٍ، وَلَيْسَ لَاعٌ بِإِتْبَاعٍ لِمَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ رَجُلٌ لَاعٌ دُونَ هَاعٍ؛
And a man is 'haa' laa': 'haa'' meaning impatient, and 'laa'' meaning pained; this is the narration of the linguists, and the correct is 'mutawajji'' to express 'fa'il' by 'fa'il', and 'laa'' is not an echo of what preceded from their saying 'a man is 'laa'' without 'haa'';
وَقِيلَ: رَجُلٌ هَاعٌ لَاعٌ أَيْ جَبَانٌ جَزُوعٌ، وَقَدْ لَاعَ يَلِيعُ؛
And it was said: a man is 'haa' laa'' meaning cowardly and impatient, and he became distressed;

وَيُقَالُ: لَا تَلَعْ أَيْ لَا تَضْجَرْ؛ قَالَ الأَزْهَرِيُّ: قَوْلُهُ لَا تَلَعْ مِنْ لَاعَ كَمَا يُقَالُ لَا تَهَبْ مِنْ هَابَ.
And it is said: 'laa tal'a' meaning do not be annoyed; Al-Azhari said: his saying 'laa tal'a' is from 'laa'a' as it is said 'laa tahab' from 'haaba'.
وَامْرَأَةٌ هَاعَةٌ لَاعَةٌ، وَرَجُلٌ هَائِعٌ لَائِعٌ، وَامْرَأَةٌ لَاعَةٌ كَلَعَةٌ: تُغَازِلُكَ وَلَا تُمَكِّنُكَ، وَقِيلَ: مَلِيحَةٌ تُدِيمُ نَظَرَكَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ جَمَالِهَا، وَقِيلَ: مَلِيحَةٌ بَعِيدَةٌ مِنَ الرِّيْبَةِ، وَقِيلَ: اللَّاعَةُ المَرْأَةُ الحَدِيدَةُ الفُؤَادِ الشَّهْمَةُ.
And a woman is 'haa'ah laa'ah', and a man is 'haa'i' laa'i'', and a woman is 'laa'ah kal'ah': she flirts with you but does not yield to you, and it was said: beautiful, she keeps your gaze upon her due to her beauty, and it was said: beautiful, distant from suspicion, and it was said: 'al-laa'ah' is the strong-willed, spirited woman.
قَالَ الأَزْهَرِيُّ: اللَّوْعَةُ السَّوَادُ حَوْلَ حَلَمَةِ المَرْأَةِ، وَقَدْ أَلْعَى ثَدْيُهَا إِذَا تَغَيَّرَ.
Al-Azhari said: Al-law'ah is the darkness around a woman's nipple, and her breast became 'al'aa'' if it changed color.
ابْنُ الأَعْرَابِيِّ: أَلْوَاعُ الثَّدْيِ جَمْعُ لَوْعٍ وَهُوَ السَّوَادُ الَّذِي عَلَى الثَّدْيِ، قَالَ الأَزْهَرِيُّ: هَذَا السَّوَادُ يُقَالُ لَهُ لُعْوَةٌ وَلَوْعَةٌ، وَهُمَا لُغَتَانِ؛
Ibn Al-A'rabi: 'Alwaa' al-thady' is the plural of 'law'' which is the darkness on the breast, Al-Azhari said: this darkness is called 'lu'wah' and 'law'ah', and they are two variants;
بَلُوعِ ثَدْيٍ، كَأَنَّفِ الكَلْبِ، دِمَاعٌ
