وقيل: هو منقع الماء في حر الطين،

وقيل: هو ما استوى من الأرض وصلب ولم يكن فيه نبات،

قال أبو الهيثم: القاع الأرض الحرة الطين التي لا يخالطها رمل فيشرب ماءها، وهي مستوية ليس فيها تطامن ولا ارتفاع، وإذا خالطها الرمل لم تكن قاعا لأنها تشرب الماء فلا تمسكه،
Abū Al-Haytham said: Al-Qāʿ is the fertile clay land that is not mixed with sand, so it drinks its water. It is level, with no depression or elevation. If sand mixes with it, it is not called Qāʿ because it absorbs water and does not retain it,
ويصغر قويعة من أنث، ومن ذكر قال قويع،
And the diminutive for a female is 'quwayʿah', and for a male, it is said 'quwayʿ',
يقال قاع وقيعان وهي طين حر ينبت السدر؛
It is said 'qāʿ' and 'qīʿān', and it is fertile clay that grows the Sidr tree;
وودعن أقواع الشماليل، بعد ما ... ذوى بقلها، أحرارها وذكورها
And they left the northern plains, after their vegetation had withered, the fertile and the non-fertile ones
كيف تركت مكة؟ قال: تركتها قد ابيض قاعها؛
How did you leave Mecca? He said: I left it, its plain has become white;
القاع: المكان المستوي الواسع في وطاءة من الأرض يعلوه ماء السماء فيمسكه ويستوي نباته، أراد أن ماء المطر غسله فابيض أو كثر عليه فبقي كالغدير الواحد.
Al-Qāʿ: the level, wide place in low ground that receives the sky's water and retains it, and its vegetation is even. He meant that the rainwater washed it and it became white, or it became abundant with it and remained like a single pool.
إنما هي قيعان أمسكت الماء.
They are but plains that held water.
والواحد منها قاع وهي أرض صلبة القفاف حرة طين القيعان، تمسك الماء وتنبت العشب،
And one of them is 'qāʿ', and it is a land of firm, high ground, fertile clay of the plains, it retains water and grows grass,
وحوالي القيعان سلقان وآكام في رؤوس القفاف غليظة تنصب مياهها في القيعان،
And around the plains are slopes and hills on top of thick elevations, whose waters flow into the plains,
ومن قيعانها ما ينبت الضال فترى حرجات، ومنها ما لا ينبت وهى أرض مرية، إذا أعشبت ربعت العرب أجمع.
And some of its plains grow the 'ḍāl' tree, so you see patches of it, and some do not grow it, and it is a fertile land; when it greens, all the Arabs settle there.
والقوع: مسطح التمر أو البر، عبدية، والجمع أقواع؛
And Al-Qawʿ: a flat surface for dates or grain, 'abadiyyah', and the plural is 'aqwāʿ';
وكذلك البيدر والأندر والجرين.
And likewise the threshing floor, the barn, and the granary.
والقاعة: موضع منتهى السانية من مجذب الدلو.
