حوزها من عقب إلى ضبع ... في ذنبان ويبيس منقفع
Protect it from heel to thigh... in the dry and shrunken Dhunban.
وأذن قفعاء
And a shrunken ear.
وكذلك الرجل إذا ارتدت أصابعها إلى القدم فتزوت علة أو خلقة
And likewise a man if his fingers retract towards the foot, becoming shrunken due to illness or nature.
ورجل قفعاء، وقد قفعت قفعا
And a man with retracted fingers, and he has contracted fingers.
يقال: رجل أقفع وامرأة قفعاء بينة القفع
It is said: a man with retracted fingers and a woman with retracted fingers, clearly so.
وقفع البرد أصابعه: أيبسها وقبضها
And the cold contracted his fingers: it dried them and clenched them.
وبذلك سمي المقفع؛ ورجل أقفع وامرأة قفعاء وقوم قفع الأصابع ورجل مقفع اليدين
And by this the one with contracted fingers is named; and a man with contracted fingers, and a woman with contracted fingers, and people with contracted fingers, and a man with contracted hands.
ونظر أعرابي إلى قنفذة وقد تقبضت فقال: أترى البرد قفعها؟ أي قبضها
An Arab looked at a hedgehog that had curled up and said: Do you think the cold contracted it? Meaning, clenched it.
والقفاع: داء تشنج منه الأصابع، وقد تقفعت هي
And Al-Qafāʿ: a disease of finger spasms, and they (the fingers) have become spastic.
والمقفعة: خشبة تضرب بها الأصابع
And Al-Miqfaʿah: a stick with which the fingers are struck.
أن غلاما مر به فعبث به فتناوله القاسم بمقفعة قفعة شديدة أي ضربه؛ المقفعة: خشبة يضرب بها الأصابع
That a boy passed by him and played with him, so Al-Qasim took him with a miqfa'ah, a severe strike, meaning he hit him; Al-Miqfa'ah: a stick with which the fingers are struck.
وهو من قفعه عما أراد إذا صرفه عنه
And it is from 'qafa'ahu 'amma arad' if one diverts him from what he wants.
يقال قفعته عما أراد إذا منعته فانقفع انقفاعا
It is said: I diverted him from what he wanted if I prevented him, and he was diverted.
والقفاع: نبات متقفع كأنه قرون صلابة إذا يبس؛ قال الأزهري: يقال له كف الكلب
And Al-Qafāʿ: a shrunken plant like hard pods when it dries; Al-Azhari said: it is called dog's paw.
والقفعاء: حشيشة ضعيفة خوارة وهي من أحرار البقول، وقيل: هي شجرة تنبت فيها حلق كحلق الخواتيم إلا أنها لا تلتقي، تكون كذلك ما دامت رطبة، فإذا يبست سقط ذلك عنها
And Al-Qafʿāʾ: a weak, pliable herb, and it is among the 'free herbs', and it was said: it is a tree that grows rings like ring-loops, but they do not meet, remaining so as long as it is moist, and when it dries, that falls off.
بيض سوابغ قد شكت لها حلق، ... كأنه حلق القفعاء مجدول
White, long coats of mail that have rings woven into them... as if they were the rings of Al-Qaf'āʾ, intertwined.
والقفعاء: شجر. قال أبو حنيفة: القفعاء شجرة خضراء ما دامت رطبة، وهي قضبان قصار تخرج من أصل واحد لازمة للأرض ولها وريق صغير
And Al-Qafʿāʾ: trees. Abu Hanifa said: Al-Qafʿāʾ is a green tree as long as it is moist, and it has short branches emerging from one base, clinging to the ground, and it has small leaves.
جونية كحصاة القسم، مرتعها ... بالسي، ما تنبت القفعاء والحسك
A dark-colored one like a pebble from Al-Qasm, its pasture... in the plain, where Al-Qafʿāʾ and thorns grow.
ولها نور أحمر مثل شرر النار، وورقها تراها مستعليات من فوق وثمرها مقفع من تحت
And it has a red bloom like sparks of fire, and its leaves you see them rising from above and its fruit is contracted from below.
وشاة قفعاء: وهي القصيرة الذنب وقد قفعت قفعا، وكبش أقفع، وهن الكباش القفع
And a shorn sheep: it is the short-tailed one, and it has contracted tail, and a ram with a contracted tail, and they are the rams with contracted tails.
إنا وجدنا العيس خيرا بقية ... من القفع أذنابا، إذا ما اقشعرت
Indeed, we found the riding camels to be a better remnant... than short tails, when they shiver.
كأنه أراد بالقفع أذنابا المعزى لأنها تقشعر إذا صردت، وأما الضأن فإنها لا تقشعر من الصرد
As if he meant by Al-Qafʿ short tails of goats because they shiver when it is cold, but sheep do not shiver from the cold.
والقفع: جنن كالمكاب من خشب يدخل تحتها الرجال إذا مشوا إلى الحصون في الحرب؛ قال الأزهري: هي الدبابات التي يقاتل تحتها، واحدتها قفعة
And Al-Qafʿ: shields like wooden sheds under which men enter when they march to fortifications in war; Al-Azhari said: they are the mobile shelters under which one fights, the singular of which is Qafʿah.
والقفع: ضبر تتخذ من خشب يمشي بها الرجال إلى الحصون في الحرب يدخل تحتها الرجال
And Al-Qafʿ: bundles made of wood, by which men walk to fortifications in war, men entering under them.
والقفاعة: مصيدة للصيد، قال ابن دري: ولا أحسبها عربية
And Al-Qafāʿah: a trap for hunting, Ibn Diri said: and I do not think it is Arabic.
والقفعات: الدوارات التي يجعل فيها الدهانون السمسم المطحون يضعون بعضه على بعض ثم يضغطونه حتى يسيل منه الدهن
And Al-Qafʿāt: the round containers in which oil makers place ground sesame, putting some on top of the other, then pressing it until the oil flows out.
والقفعة: جماعة الجراد
And Al-Qufʿah: a swarm of locusts.
أنه ذكر عنده الجراد فقال: ليت عندنا منه قفعة أو قفعتين ؛ القفعة: هو هذا الشبيه بالزبيل، وقال الأزهري: هو شيء كالقفة يتخذ واسع الأسفل ضيق الأعلى، حشوها مكان الحلفاء عراجين تدق، وظاهرها خوص على عمل سلال الخوص
That locusts were mentioned to him, so he said: I wish we had a quf'ah or two of them; Al-Quf'ah: it is this thing resembling a basket, and Al-Azhari said: it is something like a quffah, made wide at the bottom and narrow at the top, its filling is crushed palm branches instead of alfafa, and its exterior is palm leaves, made like palm leaf baskets.
وهنة تتخذ من خوص تشبه الزبيل ليس بالكبير، لا عرى لها، يجنى فيها الثمر ونحوه وتسمى بالعراق القفة
And it is a thing made of palm leaves resembling a basket, not large, without handles, in which fruit and the like are gathered, and it is called Al-Quffah in Iraq.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: القفع القفاف، واحدتها قفعة
And Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Al-Qafʿ are the baskets, the singular of which is Qafʿah.
وقال محمد بن يحيى: القفعة الجلة بلغة اليمن يحمل فيها القطن
And Muhammad bin Yahya said: Al-Quf'ah is Al-Jallah in the dialect of Yemen, in which cotton is carried.
ويقال: أقفع هذا أي أوعه
And it is said: 'Aqfa' this, meaning, store it.
ورجل قفاع لماله إذا كان لا ينفقه، ولا يبالي ما وقع في قفعته أي في وعائه
And a man is Qaffāʿ for his wealth if he does not spend it, and he does not care what falls into his Qaf'atihi, meaning his container.
يقال أحمر قفاعي، وهو الأحمر الذي يتقشر أنفه من شدة حمرته
It is said: a Qafāʿī red, which is a red color where the nose peels from the intensity of its redness.
