When Gabriel descended to the Prophet, peace be upon him, with revelation when he was first sent, the angels in the sky thought he had descended for the Day of Judgment, so they were terrified by that,
فأقبلوا على جبريل ومن معه من الملائكة فقال كل فريق منهم لهم: ماذا قال ربكم
So they turned to Gabriel and the angels with him, and each group said to them: What did your Lord say?
وفي حديث عمرو بن معديكرب: قال له الأشعث: لأضرطنك فقال: كلا إنها لعزوم مفزعة أي صحيحة تنزل بها «2» الأفزاع.
And in the hadith of Amr ibn Ma'd Yakrib: Al-Ash'ath said to him: I will surely break you, so he said: No, these are potent incantations that bring about terrors.
والمفزع: الذي كشف عنه الفزع وأزيل.
And al-mafzaʿ: that from which fear has been removed and dispelled.
ورجل فزع، ولا يكسر لقلة فعل في الصفة وإنما جمعه بالواو والنون، وفازع والجمع فزعة،
And a man is fazaʿ, and it is not broken pluralized due to the scarcity of the pattern 'fa'al' for adjectives; its plural is with waw and nun, and faazi', and the plural is faza'ah,

So I said to the cup: Restrain it, for I have descended upon the dune of Zarud to seek help.
إذا ما فزعنا أو دعينا لنجدة، ... لبسنا عليهن الحديد المسردا
When we sought help or were called for aid, ... we donned upon them the layered armor.
فقوله فزعنا أي أغثنا؛
So his saying 'faza'na' means 'we aided'.
إذا دعت غوثها ضراتها فزعت ... أعقاب ني، على الأثباج، منضود
When her co-wives called for her milk, she aided them with the fat on their backs, layered upon their flanks.
ويقال: فلان مفزعة، بالهاء، يستوي فيه التذكير والتأنيث إذا كان يفزع منه.
And it is said: So-and-so is a mafza'ah (a source of refuge), the ta' marbuta is used, and it is the same for masculine and feminine when one seeks refuge from them.
وفزع إليه: لجأ، فهو مفزع لمن فزع إليه أي ملجأ لمن التجأ إليه.
And 'fazaʿa ilayhi': he sought refuge, so he is a mafzaʿ for whom one seeks refuge, meaning a refuge for whom one seeks refuge.
فافزعوا إلى الصلاة أي الجؤوا إليها واستعينوا بها على دفع الأمر الحادث.
So flee to prayer, meaning resort to it and seek help from it to ward off the impending matter.
وتقول: فزعت إليك وفزعت منك ولا تقل فزعتك.
And you say: 'Faza'tu ilayka' (I sought refuge with you) and 'faza'tu minka' (I feared you), but do not say 'faza'tuka'.
والمفزع والمفزعة: الملجأ، وقيل: المفزع المستغاث به، والمفزعة الذي يفزع من أجله، فرقوا بينهما،
And al-mafzaʿ and al-mafzaʿah: the refuge. And it is said: al-mafzaʿ is the one sought for help, and al-mafzaʿah is that from which one seeks refuge; they differentiate between them,
قال الفراء: المفزع يكون جبانا ويكون شجاعا، فمن جعله شجاعا مفعولا به قال: بمثله تنزل الأفزاع، ومن جعله جبانا جعله يفزع من كل شيء،
Al-Farra' said: Al-mafzaʿ can be a coward and can be brave. Whoever considers it brave as an object says: With such as him, terrors descend. And whoever considers it cowardly makes him fear everything,
وفلان مفزع الناس وامرأة مفزع وهم مفزع: معناه إذا دهمنا أمر فزعنا إليه أي لجأنا إليه واستغثنا به.
And so-and-so is the mafzaʿ of the people, and a woman is a mafzaʿ, and they are a mafzaʿ: meaning if something befalls us, we flee to him, i.e., we seek refuge with him and call for his help.
والفزع أيضا: الإغاثة؛
And al-fazaʿ also: aid;
إنكم لتكثرون عند الفزع وتقلون عند الطمع أي تكثرون عند الإغاثة،
You are numerous in times of aid and few in times of greed, meaning you are numerous when help is needed,
وقالوا فزعته فزعا بمعنى أفزعته أي أغثته وهي لغة ففيه ثلاث لغات: فزعت القوم وفزعتهم وأفزعتهم، كل ذلك بمعنى أغثتهم.
And they said 'faza'tuhu faz'an' meaning 'afza'tuhu', i.e., 'I aided him', and this is a dialect. So there are three ways: 'faza'tu al-qawm', 'faza'tuhum', and 'afza'tuhum', all meaning 'I aided them'.
قال ابن بري: ومما يسأل عنه يقال كيف يصح أن يقال فزعته بمعنى أغثته متعديا واسم الفاعل منه فعل، وهذا إنما جاء في نحو قولهم حذرته فأنا حذره،
Ibn al-Bari said: And among the questions asked is how it is correct to say 'faza'tuhu' meaning 'I aided him' as a transitive verb, and its active participle is 'fa'al'. This only occurs in cases like their saying 'hadhartuhu fa-ana hadhiruhu' (I warned him, so I am wary of him).
قال: وهذا لا يصح في فزعته بمعنى أغثته أن يكون على تقدير من، وقد يجوز أن يكون فزع معدولا عن فازع كما كان حذر معدولا عن حاذر،
He said: And this is not correct for 'faza'tuhu' meaning 'I aided him' to be on the estimation of 'min'. It is possible that 'fazaʿ' is derived from 'fāziʿ' as 'hadhir' is derived from 'ḥādhir',
والصواب في هذا أن فزعته بمعنى أغثته بمعنى فزعت له ثم أسقطت اللام لأنه يقال فزعته وفزعت له،
And the correct view in this is that 'faza'tuhu' meaning 'I aided him' means 'faza'tu lahu' (I sought help for him), then the preposition 'laam' was omitted because it is said 'faza'tuhu' and 'faza'tu lahu'.
والإفزاع: الإغاثة.
And al-ifzāʿ: aid.
والإفزاع: الإخافة.
And al-ifzāʿ: causing fear.
يقال: فزعت إليه فأفزعني أي لجأت إليه من الفزع فأغاثني، وكذلك التفزيع، وهو من الأضداد،
It is said: 'Faza'tu ilayhi fa-afza'ani' means I sought refuge with him out of fear, and he aided me. Likewise, al-tafzi' is from the opposites,
أفزعته إذا أغثته، وأفزعته إذا خوفته، وهذه الألفاظ كلها صحيحة ومعانيها عن العرب محفوظة.
I 'afza'tuhu' if I aided him, and I 'afza'tuhu' if I frightened him. All these words are correct and their meanings are preserved from the Arabs.
يقال: أفزعته لما فزع أي أغثته لما استغاث.
It is said: 'Afza'tuhu lima fazaʿa' means I aided him when he sought aid.
وفي حديث المخزومية: ففزعوا إلى أسامة أي استغاثوا به.
And in the hadith of the Makhzumiyyah: 'Fa-faza'ū ilā Usāmah' means they sought help from Usamah.
ويقال فزعت الرجل أغثته بمعنى أفزعته، فيكون على هذا الفزع المغيث والمستغيث، وهو من الأضداد.
And it is said 'faza'tu al-rajul' (I aided the man) meaning 'afza'tuhu'. Thus, 'al-fazaʿ' in this context can mean the one who aids and the one who seeks aid, and it is from the opposites.
وتجعله إغاثة للمفزوع المروع، وتجعله استغاثة، فأما الفزع بمعنى الاستغاثة ففي الحديث: أنه فزع أهل المدينة ليلا فركب النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، فرسا لأبي طلحة عريا فلما رجع قال: لن تراعوا، إني وجدته بحرا ؛
And it is made an aid for the frightened and terrified, and it is made a seeking of help. As for 'al-fazaʿ' meaning seeking help, it is in the hadith: He sought help for the people of Medina at night, so the Prophet, peace be upon him, rode a horse of Abu Talha's bare. When he returned, he said: You will not be alarmed, I found it to be a sea.
معنى قوله فزع أهل المدينة أي استصرخوا وظنوا أن عدوا أحاط بهم.
The meaning of his saying 'fazaʿa ahl al-madinah' is that they cried for help and thought an enemy had surrounded them.
يقال: فزعت إليه فأفزعني أي استغثت إليه فأغاثني.
It is said: 'Faza'tu ilayhi fa-afza'ani' means I sought help from him, and he aided me.
وفي صفة علي، عليه السلام: فإذا فزع فزع إلى ضرس حديد أي إذا استغيث به التجئ إلى ضرس، والتقدير فإذا فزع إليه فزع إلى ضرس، فحذف الجار واستتر الضمير.
And in the description of Ali, peace be upon him: 'Fa-idha fazaʿa fazaʿa ila ḍirs ḥadīd' means when he is sought for help, he resorts to a hard tooth. The estimation is 'fa-idha fazaʿa ilayhi fazaʿa ila ḍirs', so the preposition was omitted and the pronoun is hidden.
وفزع الرجل: انتصر، وأفزعه هو.
And 'fazaʿa al-rajul': the man was victorious, and 'afza'ahu huwa': he made him victorious.
أنه فزع من نومه محمرا وجهه ، وفي رواية: أنه نام ففزع وهو يضحك أي هب وانتبه؛
That he woke up from his sleep with his face flushed. In another narration: He slept and woke up laughing, meaning he stirred and became alert;
يقال: فزع من نومه وأفزعته أنا، وكأنه من الفزع الخوف لأن الذي ينبه لا يخلو من فزع ما.
It is said: 'Fazaʿa min nawmihi' (he woke up from sleep) and 'afza'tuhu ana' (I woke him up), and it is as if it is from 'al-fazaʿ' (fear) because the one who is awakened cannot be without some fear.
ألا أفزعتموني أي أنبهتموني.
Did you not wake me up? meaning, did you not alert me.
ما لي لم أرك فزعت لأبي بكر وعمر كما فزعت لعثمان؟ فقال: عثمان رجل حيي.
Why do I not see you alarmed for Abu Bakr and Umar as you were alarmed for Uthman? So he said: Uthman is a shy man.
يقال: فزعت لمجيء فلان إذا تأهبت له متحولا من حال إلى حال كما ينتقل النائم من النوم إلى اليقظة،
It is said: 'Faza'tu li-maji'i fulan' means you prepared for the arrival of so-and-so, transitioning from one state to another, just as a sleeper transitions from sleep to wakefulness,
