صَمَعَتْ أُذُنُهُ صَمَعًا وَهِيَ صَمْعَاءُ: صَغُرَتْ وَلَمْ تَطْرِفْ وَكَانَ فِيهَا اضْطِمَارٌ وَلُصُوقٌ بِالرَّأْسِ
His ear was small (ṣamaʿat) with smallness (ṣamaʿan), and it was small-eared (ṣamʿāʾ): it was small, did not protrude, and was sunken and stuck to the head.
وَقِيلَ: هُوَ أَنْ تَلْصِقَ بِالْعَذَارِ مِنْ أَصْلِهَا وَهِيَ قَصِيرَةٌ غَيْرُ مُطْرِفَةٍ
And it is said: it is that it sticks to the temple from its origin, being short and not protruding.
وَقِيلَ: هِيَ الَّتِي ضَاقَ صِمَاخُهَا وَتَحَدَّدَتْ
And it is said: it is that whose ear canal is narrow and defined.
وَالصُّمْعُ: الصَّغِيرُ الْأُذُنِ الْمَلِيحُهَا
And al-ṣumʿ: the small-eared and beautiful one.
وَالصَّمْعَاءُ مِنَ الْمَعْزِ: الَّتِي أُذُنُهَا كَأُذُنِ الظَّبْيِ بَيْنَ السَّكَّاءِ وَالْأُذْنَاءِ
And al-ṣamʿāʾ from goats: she whose ear is like the ear of a gazelle, between being earless and having prominent ears.
وَالْأَصْمَعُ: الصَّغِيرُ الْأُذُنِ، وَالْأُنْثَى صَمْعَاءُ
And al-aṣmaʿ: the small-eared one, and the female is ṣamʿāʾ.
وَقَالَ الْأَزْهَرِيُّ: الصَّمْعَاءُ الشَّاةُ اللَّطِيفَةُ الْأُذُنِ الَّتِي لَصِقَتْ أُذُنَاهَا بِالرَّأْسِ
And al-Azhari said: al-ṣamʿāʾ is the fine-eared sheep whose ears stick to the head.
يُقَالُ: عَنْزٌ صَمْعَاءُ وَتَيْسٌ أَصْمَعُ إِذَا كَانَا صَغِيرَيْ الْأُذُنِ
It is said: a small-eared (ṣamʿāʾ) goat and a small-eared (aṣmaʿ) ram if they are small-eared.
كَأَنِّي بِرَجُلٍ أَصْعَلَ أَصْمَعَ حَمِشِ السَّاقَيْنِ يَهْدِمُ الْكَعْبَةَ
As if I see a man with sparse hair, small-eared (aṣmaʿ), with slender legs, demolishing the Kaaba.
وَالْأَصْمَعُ: الصَّغِيرُ الْأُذُنَيْنِ مِنَ النَّاسِ وَغَيْرِهِمْ
And al-aṣmaʿ: the small-eared one among people and others.
وَفِي الْحَدِيثِ: أَنَّ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ كَانَ لَا يَرَى بَأْسًا بِأَنْ يُضَحَّى بِالصَّمْعَاءِ أَيِ الصَّغِيرَةِ الْأُذُنَيْنِ
And in the hadith: Ibn Abbas saw no harm in sacrificing the small-eared (al-ṣamʿāʾ), meaning the small-eared one.
وَظَبْيٌ مُصَمَّعٌ: أَصْمَعُ الْأُذُنِ
And a small-eared (muṣammaʿ) gazelle: small-eared (aṣmaʿ al-udhun).
وَالْأَصْمَعُ: الظَّلِيمُ لِصِغَرِ أُذُنِهِ وَلُصُوقِهَا بِرَأْسِهِ
And al-aṣmaʿ: the ostrich, due to the smallness of its ear and its adherence to its head.
وَالصُّمْعُ فِي الْكُعُوبِ: لَطَافَتُهَا وَاسْتِوَاؤُهَا
And al-ṣumʿ in the ankles: their slenderness and evenness.
وَامْرَأَةٌ صَمْعَاءُ الْكَعْبَيْنِ: لَطِيفَتُهُمَا مُسْتَوِيَتُهُمَا
And a woman with slender ankles (ṣamʿāʾ al-kaʿbayn): their slenderness and evenness.
وَكَعْبٌ أَصْمَعُ: لَطِيفٌ مُحَدَّدٌ
And a slender ankle (kaʿb aṣmaʿ): slender and defined.
صَمْعَ الْكُعُوبِ أَيْ صِغَارَ الْكُعُوبِ
Small ankles (ṣamʿ al-kʿūb) meaning small ankles.
وَقَوَائِمُ الثَّوْرِ الْوَحْشِيِّ تَكُونُ صُمْعَ الْكُعُوبِ لَيْسَ فِيهَا نُتُوءٌ وَلَا جَفَاءٌ
And the legs of the wild bull are small-ankled (ṣumʿ al-kʿūb), with no protrusion or roughness.
وَأَرَادَ بِالْأَصْمَعِ الضَّامِرَ الَّذِي لَيْسَ بِمُنْتَفِخٍ
And he meant by al-aṣmaʿ the lean one that is not swollen.
وَقَنَاةٌ صَمْعَاءُ الْكُعُوبِ: مُكْتَنَزَةُ الْجَوْفِ صُلْبَةٌ لَطِيفَةُ الْعُقَدِ
And a leg with slender joints (ṣamʿāʾ al-kʿūb): plump-bodied, firm, with fine nodes.
وَقِيلَ الصَّمْعَاءُ الَّتِي نَبَتَتْ ثَمَرَتُهَا فِي أَعْلَاهَا
And it is said: al-ṣamʿāʾ is that whose fruit grows at its top.
وَقِيلَ: الصَّمْعَاءُ الْبَهْمَى إِذَا ارْتَفَعَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَتَّفِقَأَ
And it is said: al-ṣamʿāʾ is the bahmā plant when it grows tall before its seeds split.
وَالرِّيشُ الْأَصْمَعُ: اللَّطِيفُ الْعَسِيبُ
And al-aṣmaʿ feathers: the fine-shafted ones.
وَتَصَمَّعَ رِيشُ السَّهْمِ إِذَا رُمِيَ بِهِ رَمْيَةً فَتَلَطَّخَ بِالدَّمِ وَانْضَمَّ
And the feather of the arrow became matted (tṣammaʿa) if it was shot and became smeared with blood and clumped.
وَالصُّمْعَانُ: مَا رِيشَ بِهِ السَّهْمُ مِنَ الظِّهَارِ، وَهُوَ أَفْضَلُ الرِّيشِ
And al-ṣumʿān: what the arrow is fletched with from the upper wing, and it is the best of feathers.
وَالْمُتَصَمِّعُ: الْمُتَلَطِّخُ بِالدَّمِ
And al-mutaṣammiʿ: the blood-stained one.
فَالْمُتَصَمِّعُ: الْمُنْضَمُّ الرِّيشُ مِنَ الدَّمِ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ أُذُنٌ صَمْعَاءُ
So al-mutaṣammiʿ: the feathers clumped from blood, from their saying 'a small-eared (ṣamʿāʾ) ear'.
وَقِيلَ: هُوَ الْمُتَلَطِّخُ بِالدَّمِ وَهُوَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ لِأَنَّ الرِّيشَ إِذَا تَلَطَّخَ بِالدَّمِ انْضَمَّ
And it is said: it is the one smeared with blood, and it is from that because when feathers are smeared with blood, they clump.
وَيُقَالُ لِلسَّهْمِ: خَرَجَ مُتَصَمِّعًا إِذَا ابْتَلَّتْ قَذَذُهُ مِنَ الدَّمِ وَغَيْرِهِ فَانْضَمَّتْ
And it is said of an arrow: it came out matted (mutaṣammiʿan) if its feathers became wet with blood or other things and clumped.
وَصَمَعَ الْفُؤَادُ: حِدَّتُهُ
And the heart was sharp (ṣamaʿa): its sharpness.
وَقَلْبٌ أَصْمَعُ: ذَكِيٌّ مُتَوَقِّدٌ فَطِنٌ وَهُوَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ
And a sharp-hearted (aṣmaʿ) heart: intelligent, alert, discerning, and it is from this.
وَالْأَصْمَعَانِ: الْقَلْبُ الذَّكِيُّ وَالرَّأْيُ الْعَازِمُ
And al-aṣmaʿān: the intelligent heart and the resolute opinion.
وَالْأَصْمَعِيُّ: الْفُؤَادُ الْأَصْمَعُ وَالرَّأْيُ الْأَصْمَعُ الْعَازِمُ الذَّكِيُّ
And al-aṣmaʿī: the sharp heart (al-fuʾād al-aṣmaʿ) and the sharp, resolute, intelligent opinion (al-raʾy al-aṣmaʿ).
وَرَجُلٌ أَصْمَعُ الْقَلْبِ إِذَا كَانَ حَادَّ الْفِطْنَةِ
And a man with a sharp mind (aṣmaʿ al-qalb) if he is sharp in intellect.
وَالصُّمْعُ: الْحَدِيدُ الْفُؤَادِ
And al-ṣumʿ: the sharp-hearted.
وَعَزْمَةٌ صَمْعَاءُ أَيْ مَاضِيَةٌ
And a resolute decision (ʿazmah ṣamʿāʾ) meaning decisive.
وَرَجُلٌ صَمْعٌ بَيْنَ الصُّمْعِ: شُجَاعٌ لِأَنَّ الشُّجَاعَ يُوصَفُ بِتَجَمُّعِ الْقَلْبِ وَانْضِمَامِهِ
And a man of courage (ṣamʿ bayn al-ṣumʿ): brave, because the brave is described by the gathering and cohesion of the heart.
وَرَجُلٌ أَصْمَعُ الْقَلْبِ إِذَا كَانَ مُتَيَقِّظًا ذَكِيًّا
And a man with a sharp mind (aṣmaʿ al-qalb) if he is alert and intelligent.
وَصَمَّعَ فُلَانٌ عَلَى رَأْيِهِ إِذَا صَمَّمَ عَلَيْهِ
And so-and-so was firm (ṣammaʿa) in his opinion if he was determined about it.
وَالصَّوْمَعَةُ مِنْ الْبِنَاءِ سُمِّيَتْ صَوْمَعَةً لِتَلْطِيفِ أَعْلَاهَا
And the monastery (al-ṣawmaʿah) of buildings is named ṣawmaʿah for the refinement of its top.
وَالصَّوْمَعَةُ: مَنَارُ الرَّاهِبِ
And al-ṣawmaʿah: the monk's lighthouse/tower.
وَصَوْمَعَ بِنَاءَهُ: عَلَاهُ
And he crowned his building (ṣawmaʿa bināʾahu): he raised its top.
وَصَوْمَعَةُ الثَّرِيدِ: جُثَّتُهُ وَذُرْوَتُهُ
And the peak of the tharid (ṣawmaʿat al-tharīd): its mass and its summit.
وَقَدْ صَمَّعَهُ
And he crowned it (ṣammaʿahu).
وَيُقَالُ: أَتَانَا بِثَرِيدَةٍ مُصَمَّعَةٍ إِذَا دُقِّقَتْ وَحُدِّدَ رَأْسُهَا وَرُفِعَتْ
And it is said: he brought us a crowned tharid (mutaṣammaʿah) if it was finely made, its top pointed and raised.
وَتُسَمَّى الثَّرِيدَةُ إِذَا سُوِّيَتْ كَذَلِكَ صَوْمَعَةً
And the tharid is called a ṣawmaʿah if it is prepared thus.
وَصَوْمَعَةُ النَّصَارَى فَوعْلَةٌ مِنْ هَذَا لِأَنَّهَا دَقِيقَةُ الرَّأْسِ
And the Christian monastery (ṣawmaʿat al-naṣārā) is a faʿlah from this because it is fine-headed.
وَيُقَالُ لِلْعُقَابِ صَوْمَعَةٌ لِأَنَّهَا أَبَدًا مُرْتَفِعَةٌ عَلَى أَشْرَفِ مَكَانٍ تَقْدِرُ عَلَيْهِ
And the eagle is called a ṣawmaʿah because it is always elevated on the highest place it can reach.
وَالصَّوَامِعُ: الْبَرَانِسُ
And al-ṣawāmiʿ: the hoods/brims.
وَصَمَعَ الظَّبْيُ: ذَهَبَ فِي الْأَرْضِ
And the gazelle went (ṣamaʿa) across the land.
وَالْأَصْمَعُ: السَّيْفُ الْقَاطِعُ
And al-aṣmaʿ: the sharp sword.
وَيُقَالُ: صَمَعَ فُلَانٌ فِي كَلَامِهِ إِذَا أَخْطَأَ
And so-and-so erred (ṣamaʿa) in his speech if he made a mistake.
وَصَمَعَ إِذَا رَكِبَ رَأْسَهُ فَمَضَى غَيْرَ مُكْتَرِثٍ
And he went recklessly (ṣamaʿa) if he became stubborn and proceeded without caring.
وَالْأَصْمَعُ: السَّادِرُ
And al-aṣmaʿ: the heedless one.
وَقَطْرَهُ أَيْ صَرَعَهُ وَصَمَّعَهُ أَيْ صَرَعَهُ
And he threw him down (qaṭrahu), meaning he felled him, and he ṣammaʿahu, meaning he felled him.
وَالصَّمْلَقَعُ الَّذِي فِي رَأْسِهِ حِدَّةٌ
And al-ṣamlaqaʿ who has sharpness in his head.
