Meaning, they were bewildered.
ورجل سكع: متحير
And a confused man: bewildered.
وهو ضد الختع وهو الماهر بالدلالة
And it is the opposite of being skilled in guidance.
وسكع الرجل: مثل صقع
And the man walked crookedly: like 'saqa'a'.
والتسكع: التمادي في الباطل
And 'tasakku' is: persisting in falsehood.
ألا إنه في غمرة يتسكع
Indeed, he is in a deep confusion, wandering.
أي لا يدرى أين يأخذ من أرض الله
Meaning, it is not known where he is heading on God's earth.
ورجل نفح ونفيح وساكع وشصيب أي غريب
And a man is 'nafah', 'nafih', 'sakia', and 'shasib', meaning a stranger.
فلان في مسكعة من أمره وفي مسكعة
So-and-so is in a state of confusion regarding his affair and in a misleading situation.
وهي المضللة المودرة التي لا يهتدى فيها لوجه الأمر
And it is the misleading, leading-astray place where one cannot find the right course of action.
والمسكعة من الأرضين: المضللة
And 'al-maska'ah' from lands: the misleading one.
