It is called 'sajʿ' because of the resemblance of its endings and the harmony of its pauses and its breaks into rhyming patterns,

أنه نهى عن السجع في الدعاء ؛

Indeed, he (peace be upon him) disliked rhyming speech in conversation and supplication because it resembled the speech of soothsayers and their rhyming in what they divined,
فأما فواصل الكلام المنظوم الذي لا يشاكل المسجع فهو مباح في الخطب والرسائل.
But as for the pauses of structured speech that do not resemble rhymed speech, it is permissible in sermons and letters.
وسجع الحمام يسجع سجعا: هدل على جهة واحدة.
And the dove 'yasjaʿu' 'sajʿan': it coos in one direction.
لا آتيك ما سجع الحمام؛
I will not come to you as long as the dove coos;
وسجع الحمامة: موالاة صوتها على طريق واحد.
And the cooing of the dove is the repetition of its sound in one manner.
تقول العرب: سجعت الحمامة إذا دعت وطربت في صوتها.
The Arabs say: The dove 'sajaʿat' when it calls and is moved in its voice.
وسجعت الناقة سجعا: مدت حنينها على جهة واحدة.
And the she-camel 'sajaʿat' 'sajʿan': she prolonged her moaning in one direction.
وهي، إذا أنبضت فيها، تسجع ... ترنم النحل أبا لا يهجع
And it, when it is plucked, drones ... like the humming of a bee that does not sleep
وقوله تسجع يعني حنين الوتر لإنباضه؛ يقول: كأنها تحن حنينا متشابها، وكله من الاستواء والاستقامة والاشتباه.
And his saying 'tasjaʿu' means the humming of the string when plucked; he says: as if it moans a similar moan, and all of it is from being level, straight, and resembling.
ناقة ساجع طويلة؛
A long 'sājiʿ' she-camel;
وسجع له سجعا: قصد، وكل سجع قصد.
And 'sajaʿa' for him 'sajʿan': he intended, and every 'sajʿ' is an intention.
والساجع: القاصد في سيره؛
And 'al-sājiʿ' is the one who intends in his journey;
إن أحدكم إذا سجع ذلك المسجع فليس بالخيار على الله؛
Indeed, one of you, when he takes that path, is not given a choice by God;
أي سلك ذلك المسلك.
Meaning he took that path.
وأصل السجع: القصد المستوي على نسق واحد.
And the origin of 'sajʿ' is the straight intention in one pattern.
