And it was said: the meaning of 'yarta'u' is to eat; and he used as proof the saying: 'And he is beloved to me when I meet him, ... And when he is alone with me, my flesh 'ratha' (eats)', meaning he eats it.

And from that is their saying: 'He is enjoying abundance,' meaning he is in a plentiful state from which he is not prevented, so he is prosperous.
وكانت شاكر من همدان أسروه فأحسنوا إليه وروحوا عليه، وقد كان يوم فارق قومه نحيفا فهرب من شاكر فلما وصل إلى قومه قالوا: أي عمرو خرجت من عندنا نحيفا وأنت اليوم بادن فقال: القيد والرتعة، فأرسلها مثلا.
And the Shakir tribe from Hamdan captured him, treated him well, and sent him back. He had been thin when he left his people, and he escaped from Shakir. When he reached his people, they said: 'O Amr, you left us thin, and today you are plump.' He replied: 'Restraint and spaciousness in fertility,' and thus it became a proverb.
وقولهم: فلان يرتع، معناه هو مخصب لا يعدم شيئا يريده.
And their saying: 'So-and-so is enjoying abundance,' means he is prosperous and lacks nothing he desires.
ورتعت الماشية ترتع رتعا ورتوعا: أكلت ما شاءت وجاءت وذهبت في المرعى نهارا
And the livestock grazed, eating what they wished and coming and going in the pasture during the day.
والرتع لا يكون إلا في الخصب والسعة
And abundant grazing only occurs in fertile and spacious lands.
إني والله أرتع فأشبع ؛ يريد حسن رعايته للرعية وأنه يدعهم حتى يشبعوا في المرتع.
By Allah, I allow them to graze abundantly until they are satiated; he meant his good care for the subjects, allowing them to be satiated in the pasture.

And people who are prosperous and enjoy abundance, which is a relative adjective like 'ta'am' (food), and likewise is abundant pasture.
خضع مضع ضاف رتع، أراد خضع مضغ، فصير الغين عينا مهملة لأن قبله خضع وبعده رتع، والعرب تفعل مثل هذا كثيرا.
Soft, chewable, abundant, fertile; he meant soft and chewable, changing the 'ghayn' to an unpointed 'ayn' because 'khada'' preceded it and 'ratha'' followed it, and Arabs often do this.
