قال أبو عمرو: الدولعة صدفة متحوية إذا أصابها ضبح النار خرج منها كهيئة الظفر، فيستل قدر إصبع، وهذا هو الأظفار الذي في القسط؛ وأنشد للشمردل: دولعة يستلها بظفرها

Abu Amr said: 'Al-dawla'ah' is a coiled shell which, when exposed to the heat of fire, yields something like a fingernail, which can be extracted to the length of a finger, and this is the 'nail' found in incense; and he recited for Al-Shamardal: A 'dawla'ah' which she extracts with her nail.
