دفعه يدفعه دفعا ودفاعا ودافعه ودفعه فاندفع وتدفع وتدافع، وتدافعوا الشيء: دفعه كل واحد منهم عن صاحبه، وتدافع القوم أي دفع بعضهم بعضا.
He pushed him, pushing him forcefully, repelling him, and he pushed him, so he rushed forward, and they pushed each other, and they pushed the thing: each one pushed it away from his companion, and the people pushed each other, meaning some pushed others.
ورجل دفاع ومدفع: شديد الدفع.
And a man who is a 'd-f-ʿ' and 'm-d-fʿ': strong in pushing.
ودفع فلان إلى فلان شيئا ودفع عنه الشر على المثل.
And so-and-so gave something to so-and-so, and he repelled evil from him, by analogy.
ادفع الشر ولو إصبعا؛ حكاه سيبويه.
Repel evil, even if it is just a finger; Sibawayh narrated this.
ودافع عنه بمعنى دفع، تقول منه: دفع الله عنك المكروه دفعا، ودافع الله عنك السوء دفاعا.
And he defended him, meaning he pushed him away. You say from it: May God repel harm from you with a push, and may God defend you from evil with defense.
واستدفعت الله تعالى الأسواء أي طلبت منه أن يدفعها عني.
And I sought from God Almighty to repel evils, meaning I asked Him to push them away from me.
وفي حديث خالد: أنه دافع بالناس يوم موتة أي دفعهم عن موقف الهلاك، ويروى بالراء من رفع الشيء إذا أزيل عن موضعه.
And in the hadith of Khalid: that he defended the people on the day of Mu'tah, meaning he pushed them away from the brink of destruction, and it is narrated with 'ra' meaning to lift something when it is removed from its place.
والدفعة: انتهاء جماعة القوم إلى موضع بمرة؛ قال: فندعى جميعا مع الراشدين، ... فندخل في أول الدفعة
And the 'd-f-ʿ-h': the arrival of a group of people at a place all at once; he said: So we are called together with the rightly guided, ... so we enter in the first batch.
والدفعة: ما دفع من سقاء أو إناء فانصب بمرة؛ قال: كقطران الشام سالت دفعه
And the 'd-f-ʿ-h': what is pushed out of a waterskin or container and pours out at once; he said: Like the pitch of Sham, its outpouring flowed.
وكذلك دفع المطر ونحوه.
And likewise the push of rain and the like.
والدفعة من المطر: مثل الدفقة، والدفعة، بالفتح: المرة الواحدة.
And the 'd-f-ʿ-h' of rain: like the 'd-f-q-h', and the 'd-f-ʿ-h', with fatha: one time.
وتدفع السيل واندفع: دفع بعضه بعضا.
And the flood pushed itself and surged: some of it pushed the other.
والدفاع، بالضم والتشديد: طحمة السيل العظيم والموج؛ قال جواد يفيض على المعتفين، ... كما فاض يم بدفاعه
And the 'd-f-ʿ', with damma and shadda: the force of a great flood and wave; Jawad said, overflowing upon those who seek it, ... as the sea overflowed with its force.
والدفاع: كثرة الماء وشدته.
And the 'd-f-ʿ': abundance and intensity of water.
والدفاع أيضا: الشيء العظيم يدفع به عظيم مثله، على المثل.
And the 'd-f-ʿ' also: a great thing by which a similar great thing is pushed away, by analogy.
أبو عمرو: الدفاع الكثير من الناس ومن السيل ومن جري الفرس إذا تدافع جريه، وفرس دفاع؛
Abu Amr: The 'd-f-ʿ' of many people, and of a flood, and of a horse's running when its gait is pushing; and a 'd-f-ʿ' horse;
ويروى بدفاع، يريد الفرس المتدافع في جريه.
And it is narrated with 'd-f-ʿ', meaning the horse that is pushing in its gait.
ويقال: جاء دفاع من الرجال والنساء إذا ازدحموا فركب بعضهم بعضا.
And it is said: A 'd-f-ʿ' of men and women came when they crowded and some rode upon others.
ابن شميل: الدوافع أسافل الميث حيث تدفع في الأودية، أسفل كل ميثاء دافعة.
Ibn Shumayl: The 'd-w-f-ʿ' are the lower parts of the plain where they push into the valleys, the lower part of every plain is a 'd-f-ʿ-h'.
وقال الأصمعي: الدوافع مدافع الماء إلى الميث، والميث تدفع إلى الوادي الأعظم.
And Al-Asma'i said: The 'd-w-f-ʿ' are the outlets of water to the plain, and the plain pushes towards the great valley.
والدافعة: التلعة من مسايل الماء تدفع في تلعة أخرى إذا جرى في صبب وحدور من حدب، فترى له في مواضع قد انبسط شيئا واستدار ثم دفع في أخرى أسفل منها، فكل واحد من ذلك دافعة والجمع الدوافع، ومجرى ما بين الدافعتين مذنب، وقيل: المدافع المجاري والمسايل؛
And the 'd-f-ʿ-h': the stream from the water channels that pushes into another stream when it flows with slope and descent from a height, so you see in places it has spread out and curved, then pushed into another lower than it, so each one of that is a 'd-f-ʿ-h' and the plural is 'd-w-f-ʿ', and the channel between the two 'd-f-ʿ-h' is a 'm-d-h-n-b', and it was said: The 'm-d-f-ʿ' are the channels and streams;
وأنشد ابن الأعرابي: شيب المبارك، مدروس مدافعه، ... هابي المراغ، قليل الودق، موظوب المدروس: الذي ليس في مدافعه آثار السيل من جدوبته.
And Ibn Al-A'rabi recited: The white of the blessed, its 'm-d-f-ʿ' are worn away, ... its dust is stirred, little rain, 'm-w-ẓ-b'. 'M-d-r-s': that which has no trace of the flood in its 'm-d-f-ʿ' from its dryness.
ابن شميل: مدفع الوادي حيث يدفع السيل، وهو أسفله، حيث يتفرق ماؤه.
Ibn Shumayl: The 'm-d-f-ʿ' of the valley is where the flood pushes, and it is its lower part, where its water disperses.
وقال الليث: الاندفاع المضي في الأرض، كائنا ما كان؛ وأما قول الشاعر: أيها الصلصل المغذ إلى المدفع ... من نهر معقل فالمذار
And Al-Layth said: 'Al-i-n-d-f-ʿ' is moving in the land, whatever it may be; as for the poet's saying: O sonorous one, rushing to the 'm-d-f-ʿ' ... from the river of Ma'qil, then the 'm-d-h-r'.
فقيل: هو مذنب الدافعة لأنها تدفع فيه إلى الدافعة الأخرى، وقيل: المدفع اسم موضع.
So it was said: It is the 'm-d-h-n-b' of the 'd-f-ʿ-h' because it pushes into it towards the other 'd-f-ʿ-h', and it was said: The 'm-d-f-ʿ' is a place name.
والمدفع والمتدافع: المحقور الذي لا يضيف إن استضاف ولا يجدى إن استجدى، وقيل: هو الضيف الذي يتدافعه الحي، وقيل: هو الفقير الذليل لأن كلا يدفعه عن نفسه.
And the 'm-d-f-ʿ' and 'm-t-d-f-ʿ': the despised one who does not host if hosted, nor benefit if asked; and it was said: It is the guest whom the tribe pushes away, and it was said: It is the humble poor person because each one pushes him away from himself.
والمدفع: المدفوع عن نسبه.
And the 'm-d-f-ʿ': the one pushed away from his lineage.
ويقال: فلان سيد قومه غير مدافع أي غير مزاحم في ذلك ولا مدفوع عنه.
And it is said: So-and-so is the master of his people without dispute, meaning not rivaled in that and not pushed away from it.
الأصمعي: بعير مدفع كالمقرم الذي يودع للفحلة فلا يركب ولا يحمل عليه، وقال: هو الذي إذا أتي به ليحمل عليه قيل: ادفع هذا أي دعه إبقاء عليه؛ وأنشد غيره لذي الرمة: وقربن للأظعان كل مدفع
Al-Asma'i: A 'm-d-f-ʿ' camel like the 'm-q-r-m' that is set aside for the stud male and is not ridden nor loaded; and he said: It is the one that when brought to be loaded, it is said: Push this one away, meaning leave it to preserve it; and others recited for Dhu Al-Rummah: And they brought for the tents every 'm-d-f-ʿ'.
والدافع والمدفاع: الناقة التي تدفع اللبن على رأس ولدها لكثرته، وإنما يكثر اللبن في ضرعها حين تريد أن تضع، وكذلك الشاة المدفاع، والمصدر الدفعة، وقيل: الشاة التي تدفع اللبأ في ضرعها قبيل النتاج.
And the 'd-f-ʿ' and 'm-d-f-ʿ': the she-camel that pushes milk onto her young's head due to its abundance, and the milk becomes abundant in her udder when she is about to give birth, and likewise the 'm-d-f-ʿ' ewe, and the masdar is 'd-f-ʿ-h', and it was said: The ewe that pushes colostrum into her udder just before giving birth.
يقال: دفعت الشاة إذا أضرعت على رأس الولد.
It is said: The ewe 'd-f-ʿ-t' when her udder swells for the young.
وقال أبو عبيدة: قوم يجعلون المفكه والدافع سواء، يقولون هي دافع بولد، وإن شئت قلت هي دافع بلبن، وإن شئت قلت هي دافع بضرعها، وإن شئت قلت هي دافع وتسكت؛ وأنشد: ودافع قد دفعت للنتج، ... قد مخضت مخاض خيل نتج
And Abu Ubaydah said: Some people consider 'm-f-k-h' and 'd-f-ʿ' to be the same, saying she is 'd-f-ʿ' with a young, and if you wish you say she is 'd-f-ʿ' with milk, and if you wish you say she is 'd-f-ʿ' with her udder, and if you wish you say she is 'd-f-ʿ' and remain silent; he recited: And a 'd-f-ʿ' that I pushed for birth, ... she has experienced the labor of birthing horses.
وقال النضر: يقال دفعت لبنها وباللبن إذا كان ولدها في بطنها، فإذا نتجت فلا يقال دفعت.
And Al-Nadr said: It is said 'd-f-ʿ-t' her milk and with milk when her young is in her belly, but when she gives birth, it is not said 'd-f-ʿ-t'.
والدفوع من النوق: التي تدفع برجلها عند الحلب.
And the 'd-f-ʿ-w' among she-camels: the one that kicks with her leg during milking.
والاندفاع: المضي في الأمر.
And 'al-i-n-d-f-ʿ': proceeding in the matter.
والمدافعة: المزاحمة.
And 'm-d-f-ʿ-h': jostling.
ودفع إلى المكان ودفع، كلاهما: انتهى.
And he pushed to the place and he pushed, both mean: he arrived.
ويقال: هذا طريق يدفع إلى مكان كذا أي ينتهي إليه.
And it is said: This is a road that pushes to such-and-such a place, meaning it leads to it.
ودفع فلان إلى فلان أي انتهى إليه.
And so-and-so pushed towards so-and-so, meaning he reached him.
وغشيتنا سحابة فدفعناها إلى غيرنا أي ثنيت عنا وانصرفت عنا إليهم، وأراد دفعتنا أي دفعت عنا.
And a cloud covered us, so we pushed it to others, meaning it was turned away from us and diverted from us to them, and he meant 'd-f-ʿ-n-ā' meaning it pushed away from us.
ودفع الرجل قوسه يدفعها: سواها؛ حكاه أبو حنيفة، قال: ويلقى الرجل الرجل فإذا رأى قوسه قد تغيرت قال: ما لك لا تدفع قوسك؟ أي ما لك لا تعملها هذا العمل.
And a man pushed his bow, he pushes it: he straightened it; Abu Hanifa narrated this, he said: A man meets another man, and if he sees his bow has changed, he says: Why don't you push your bow? Meaning, why don't you work on it this way?
ودافع ودفاع ومدافع: أسماء.
And 'd-f-ʿ', 'd-f-ʿ', and 'm-d-f-ʿ': are names.
واندفع الفرس أي أسرع في سيره.
And the horse surged, meaning it sped up its pace.
واندفعوا في الحديث.
And they surged into the conversation.
وفي الحديث: أنه دفع من عرفات أي ابتدأ السير، ودفع نفسه منها ونحاها أو دفع ناقته وحملها على السير.
And in the hadith: that he set out from Arafat, meaning he began the journey, and he pushed himself away from it and moved it aside, or he pushed his she-camel and made it move.
ويقال: دافع الرجل أمر كذا إذا أولع به وانهمك فيه.
And it is said: A man 'd-f-ʿ' such-and-such a matter when he becomes obsessed with it and engrossed in it.
والمدافعة: المماطلة.
And 'm-d-f-ʿ-h': procrastination.
ودافع فلان فلانا في حاجته إذا ماطله فيها فلم يقضها.
And so-and-so procrastinated with so-and-so in his need, meaning he delayed him in it and did not fulfill it.
والمدفع: واحد مدافع المياه التي تجري فيها.
And the 'm-d-f-ʿ': is the singular of the water channels in which they flow.
والمدفع، بالكسر: الدفوع؛ ومنه قولها يعني سجاح: لا بل قصير مدفع
And the 'm-d-f-ʿ', with kasra: the 'd-f-ʿ-w'; and from it is her saying, meaning Sajjah: No, rather short 'm-d-f-ʿ'.
