لما طعن عمر جعل ابن عباس، رضي الله عنهما، يجزعه ؛ قال ابن الأثير: أي يقول له ما يسليه ويزيل جزعه وهو الحزن والخوف.
When Umar was stabbed, Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them, began to console him; Ibn al-Athir said: meaning he said to him what would comfort him and remove his distress, which is sadness and fear.
والجزع: قطعك واديا أو مفازة أو موضعا تقطعه عرضا، وناحيتاه جزعاه.
And al-jazaʿ: your cutting across a valley, or a desert, or a place you cut across widthwise, and its two sides are its jazʿā.

وجزع الوادي، بالكسر: حيث تجزعه أي تقطعه، وقيل منقطعه، وقيل جانبه ومنعطفه، وقيل هو ما اتسع من مضايقه أنبت أو لم ينبت، وقيل: لا يسمى جزع الوادي جزعا حتى تكون له سعة تنبت الشجر وغيره؛ واحتج بقول لبيد: حفزت وزايلها السراب، كأنها ... أجزاع بئشة أثلها ورضامها
And the jazʿ of the valley, with a kasra: where you traverse it, meaning cut it across, and it is said to be its end, and it is said to be its side and its bend, and it is said to be what is wide in its narrow parts, whether it grows vegetation or not, and it is said: the jazʿ of the valley is not called jazʿ until it has a width that allows trees and other things to grow; and he used as evidence the saying of Labīd: You spurred and the mirage separated from them, as if they were... sections of Biʾshah, its tamarisks and its stones.
وقيل: هو منحناه، وقيل: هو إذا قطعته إلى الجانب الآخر، وقيل: هو رمل لا نبات فيه، والجمع أجزاع.
And it is said: it is its curve, and it is said: it is when you cut across it to the other side, and it is said: it is sand without vegetation, and the plural is ajzāʿ.
وجزع القوم: محلتهم؛ قال الكميت: وصادفن مشربه والمسام، ... شربا هنيا وجزعا شجيرا
And the people's jazaʿ: their dwelling place; Al-Kumait said: And they found its drinking place and the pores, ... a pleasant drink and a sorrowful jazaʿ.
وجزعة الوادي: مكان يستدير ويتسع ويكون فيه شجر يراح فيه المال من القر ويحبس فيه إذا كان جائعا أو صادرا أو مخدرا، والمخدر: الذي تحت المطر.
And the jazʿah of the valley: a place that is circular and wide, and has trees, where livestock are brought to rest from the cold and are kept there if they are hungry or returning or covered, and al-mukhaddar: that which is under the rain.
أنه وقف على محسر فقرع راحلته فخبت حتى جزعه أي قطعه عرضا؛ قال امرؤ القيس: فريقان: منهم سالك بطن نخلة، ... وآخر منهم جازع نجد كبكب
That he stopped at Muḥassar and struck his mount, and it went until it traversed it, meaning cut across it; Imruʾ al-Qays said: Two groups: one of them is taking the belly of Nakhla, ... and another of them is traversing the highlands of Kabkab.
فتفرق الناس إلى غنيمة فتجزعوها أي اقتسموها، وأصله من الجزع القطع.
So the people dispersed to plunder, and they divided it, meaning they shared it, and its origin is from al-jazaʿ, cutting.
وانجزع الحبل: انقطع بنصفين، وقيل: هو أن ينقطع، أيا كان، إلا أن ينقطع من الطرف.
And the rope snapped: it broke in half, and it is said: it is to break, whatever it may be, except to break from the end.
وانجزعت العصا: انكسرت بنصفين.
And the staff snapped: it broke in half.
وتجزع السهم: تكسر؛ قال الشاعر: إذا رمحه في الدارعين تجزعا
And the arrow shattered: it broke; The poet said: If his spear shattered among the armored men.
واجتزعت من الشجرة عودا: اقتطعته واكتسرته.
And I cut off a branch from the tree: I severed it and broke it.
ويقال: جزع لي من المال جزعة أي قطع لي منه قطعة.
And it is said: He gave me a piece of money, meaning he cut off a piece for me from it.
وبسرة مجزعة ومجزعة إذا بلغ الإرطاب ثلثيها.
And a partially ripe date, and partially ripe, if its ripening reached two-thirds.
وتمر مجزع ومجزع ومتجزع: بلغ الإرطاب نصفه، وقيل: بلغ الإرطاب من أسفله إلى نصفه، وقيل: إلى ثلثيه، وقيل: بلغ بعضه من غير أن يحد، وكذلك الرطب والعنب.
And dates are partially ripe, and partially ripe, and partially ripe: their ripening reached half, and it is said: their ripening reached from the bottom to half, and it is said: to two-thirds, and it is said: some of it ripened without limit, and likewise fresh dates and grapes.
وقد جزع البسر والرطب وغيرهما تجزيعا، فهو مجزع.

ولحم مجزع ومجزع: فيه بياض وحمرة، ونوى مجزع إذا كان محكوكا.
And meat is mixed in color and mixed in color: it has white and red, and a date pit is rubbed if it is rubbed.
وفي حديث أبي هريرة: أنه كان يسبح بالنوى المجزع ، وهو الذي حك بعضه بعضا حتى ابيض الموضع المحكوك منه وترك الباقي على لونه تشبيها بالجزع.
And in the narration of Abu Hurayrah: that he used to praise the rubbed date pits, which are those that rubbed against each other until the rubbed part turned white, and the rest remained in its color, resembling al-jazaʿ.
ووتر مجزع: مختلف الوضع، بعضه رقيق وبعضه غليظ، وجزع: مكان لا شجر فيه.
And a bowstring is uneven: its position is varied, some of it is thin and some of it is thick, and jazaʿ: a place without trees.
والجزع والجزع؛ الأخيرة عن كراع: ضرب من الخرز، وقيل: هو الخرز اليماني، وهو الذي فيه بياض وسواد تشبه به الأعين؛ قال امرؤ القيس: كأن عيون الوحش، حول خبائنا ... وأرحلنا، الجزع الذي لم يثقب واحدته جزعة؛ قال ابن بري: سمي جزعا لأنه مجزع أي مقطع بألوان مختلفة أي قطع سواده ببياضه، وكأن الجزعة مسماة بالجزعة، المرة الواحدة من جزعت.
And al-jazaʿ and al-jazaʿ; the latter from Kurāʿ: a type of bead, and it is said: it is the Yemeni bead, and it is that which has white and black, resembling eyes; Imruʾ al-Qays said: As if the eyes of the wild animals, around our tent ... and our camels, were al-jazaʿ, of which one piece is not pierced; Ibn Barrī said: it is called jazaʿ because it is majzaʿ, meaning cut with different colors, meaning its blackness is cut by its whiteness, and al-jazʿah is named after al-jazaʿ, the single instance of jazaʿ.
وفي حديث عائشة، رضي الله عنها: انقطع عقد لها من جزع ظفار.
And in the narration of Aisha, may God be pleased with her: her necklace broke from the jazaʿ of Dhafār.
والجزع: المحور الذي تدور فيه المحالة، لغة يمانية.
And al-jazaʿ: the axle around which the pulley rotates, a Yemeni dialect.
والجازع: خشبة معروضة بين خشبتين منصوبتين، وقيل: بين شيئين يحمل عليها: وقيل: هي التي توضع بين خشبتين منصوبتين عرضا لتوضع عليها سروع الكروم وعروشها وقضبانها لترفعها عن الأرض. فإن وصفت قيل: جازعة.
And al-jāziʿ: a piece of wood laid between two uprights, and it is said: between two things it carries: and it is said: it is what is placed horizontally between two uprights to support the vines, their trellises, and their branches to lift them off the ground. If described, it is said: jāziʿah.
والجزعة والجزعة من الماء واللبن: ما كان أقل من نصف السقاء والإناء والحوض.
And al-jazʿah and al-jazʿah of water and milk: what is less than half of the waterskin, the container, and the basin.
وقال اللحياني مرة: بقي في السقاء جزعة جزعة من ماء، وفي الوطب جزعة [جزعة] من لبن إذا كان فيه شيء قليل.
And Al-Laythiyānī said once: there remained in the waterskin a small amount of water, and in the milk-skin a small amount of milk if there was a little of it.
وجزعت في القربة: جعلت فيها جزعة [جزعة]، وقد جزع الحوض إذا لم يبق فيه إلا جزعة.
And I put a small amount in the waterskin: I made a small amount in it, and the basin has a small amount left if only a small amount remains in it.
ويقال: في الغدير جزعة وجزعة ولا يقال في الركية جزعة وجزعة، وقال ابن شميل: يقال في الحوض جزعة وجزعة، وهي الثلث أو قريب منه، وهي الجزع والجزع.
And it is said: in the pond there is a small amount, and it is not said in the well there is a small amount, and Ibn Shumayl said: in the basin there is a small amount, which is a third or close to it, and it is al-jazaʿ and al-jazaʿ.
وقال ابن الأعرابي: الجزعة والكثبة والغرفة والخمطة البقية من اللبن.
And Ibn Al-Aʿrābī said: Al-jazʿah, al-kathbah, al-ghurfah, and al-khamṭah are the remainder of the milk.
والجزعة: القطعة من الليل، ماضية أو آتية، يقال: مضت جزعة من الليل أي ساعة من أولها وبقيت جزعة من آخرها.
And al-jazʿah: a portion of the night, past or coming, it is said: a portion of the night has passed, meaning an hour from its beginning, and a portion remains from its end.
أبو زيد: كلأ جزاع وهو الكلأ الذي يقتل الدواب، ومنه الكلأ الوبيل.
Abu Zayd: poisonous fodder, which is fodder that kills animals, and among it is the destructive fodder.
والجزيعة: القطيعة من الغنم.
And al-juzayʿah: a flock of sheep.
ثم انكفأ إلى كبشين أملحين فذبحهما وإلى جزيعة من الغنم فقسمها بيننا ؛ الجزيعة: القطعة من الغنم تصغير جزعة، بالكسر، وهو القليل من الشيء؛ قال ابن الأثير: هكذا ضبطه الجوهري مصغرا، والذي جاء في المجمل لابن فارس الجزيعة، بفتح الجيم وكسر الزاي، وقال: هي القطعة من الغنم فعيلة بمعنى مفعولة، قال: وما سمعناها في الحديث إلا مصغرة.
Then he turned to two white rams and slaughtered them, and to a small flock of sheep and divided it among us; Al-juzayʿah: a portion of sheep, a diminutive of jazʿah, with a kasra, which is a small amount of something; Ibn al-Athīr said: Jauharī thus vocalized it as a diminutive, and what came in Al-Mujmal by Ibn Fāris is Al-juzayʿah, with a fatha on the jim and a kasra on the zay, and he said: it is a portion of sheep, a feminine noun meaning something made, he said: and we have not heard it in the hadith except as a diminutive.
أتاني الشيطان فقال إن محمدا يأتي الأنصار فيتحفونه، ما به حاجة إلى هذه الجزيعة ؛ هي تصغير جزعة يريد القليل من اللبن، هكذا ذكره أبو موسى وشرحه، والذي جاء في صحيح مسلم: ما به حاجة إلى هذه الجزعة ، غير مصغرة، وأكثر ما يقرأ في كتاب مسلم: الجرعة، بضم الجيم وبالراء، وهي الدفعة من الشرب.
Satan came to me and said, 'Muhammad goes to the Ansar and they give him gifts; he has no need for this small amount of milk'; it is a diminutive of jazʿah, meaning a small amount of milk, this is how Abu Musa mentioned and explained it, and what came in Sahih Muslim: 'he has no need for this jazʿah', not diminutive, and most of what is read in the book of Muslim: Al-jurʿah, with a damma on the jim and with a raʾ, which is a gulp of drink.
والجزع: الصبغ الأصفر الذي يسمى العروق في بعض اللغات.
