And the gazelle and the bull emerged from its hiding place, extending its head and raising its neck.
وأتلع رأسه: أطلعه فنظر؛ قال ذو الرمة:
And he showed his head, meaning he brought it out and looked; Dhu al-Rummah said:
كما أتلعت، من تحت أرطى صريمة ... إلى نبأة الصوت، الظباء الكوانس
As the shy gazelles showed themselves from beneath a dense arta tree... towards the slightest sound.
وتلع الرجل رأسه: أخرجه من شيء كان فيه، وهو شبه طلع إلا أن طلع أعم.
And the man stuck out his head: he brought it out from something he was in, and it is similar to 'tala' (emerging) except that 'tala' is more general.
والأتلع والتلع والتليع: الطويل، وقيل: الطويل العنق، وقال الأزهري في ترجمة بتع: والبتع الطويل العنق، والتلع الطويل الظهر.
And al-atla', al-tal', and al-tali' mean tall, and it is said: long-necked, and Al-Azhari said in the entry for 'bata': And al-bata' is long-necked, and al-tal' is tall-backed.
يستمسكون، من حذار الإلقاء، ... بتلعات كجذوع الصيصاء
They hold on, for fear of falling... to tall structures like the trunks of the date palm.

وأدحضت التلاع أي جعلتها زلقا تزلق فيها الأرجل.
And the tilā' made them slippery, causing feet to slip.
وكنا أناسا دائنين بغبطة، ... يسيل بنا تلع الملا وأبارقه
And we were people who lived in contentment, ... the tal' of al-Mala and its plains flowed with us.
عفا ذو حسا من فرتنى فالفوارع، ... فجنبا أريك، فالتلاع الدوافع
Dhu Hisa became desolate from Fartana and al-Fawari', ... then the sides of Arikah, then the flowing ravines.
كدخان مرتجل بأعلى تلعة، ... غرثان ضرم عرفجا مبلولا
Like smoke rising from the top of an elevated area, ... hungry, burning damp thorny shrubs.
وإني متى أهبط من الأرض تلعة، ... أجد أثرا قبلي جديدا وعافيا
And whenever I descend from the land to a low-lying area, ... I find a trace before me, new and fresh.
أنه كان يبدو «1» إلى هذه التلاع ؛ قيل في تفسيره: هو من الأضداد يقع على ما انحدر من الأرض وأشرف منها.
That he used to look out towards these tilā'; it was said in its interpretation: it is from the opposites, referring to what descends from the land and what overlooks it.
وفلان لا يوثق بسيل تلعته: يوصف بالكذب أي لا يوثق بما يقول وما يجيء به.
And so-and-so's tal'ah's flood cannot be relied upon: he is described as a liar, meaning what he says and brings cannot be trusted.
بكل تلاعة كالبدر لما ... تنور، واستقل على الحبال
With every elevated place like the full moon when it shone and settled on the ropes.
ألا ربما هاج التذكر والهوى، ... بتلعة، إرشاش الدموع السواجم
Perhaps remembrance and desire are stirred, ... in Tal'ah, the shedding of flowing tears.
وقد كان في بقعاء ري لشائكم، ... وتلعة والجوفاء يجري غديرها
And in Buq'a there was enough for your flock, ... and Tal'ah and al-Jawfa' their stream flows.
درس المنا بمتالع فأبان ... بالحبس، بين البيد والسوبان
