And it is said: ninety in the nominative case and ninety in the accusative and genitive cases, and the ninth day and the ninth night, and nineteen are open in all cases because they are two names made into one name and given one case ending.
قال الله تعالى: عليها تسعة عشر أي تسعة عشر ملكا، وأكثر القراء على هذه القراءة، وقد قرئ: تسعة عشر ، بسكون العين.
Allah the Almighty said: 'Over it are nineteen, meaning nineteen angels', and most reciters follow this recitation, and it has been recited: 'tis'ata 'ashara' with a sukun on the 'ayn'.
والتسع في المؤنث كالتسعة في المذكر.
And 'tis' (nine) for the feminine is like 'tis'ah (nine) for the masculine.
وتسعهم يتسعهم، بفتح السين: صار تاسعهم.
And 'tas'a-hum' (became their ninth), with a fatha on the sin: became their ninth.

And it is said: he is the ninth of nine and the ninth of eight and the ninth of eight, and it is not permissible to say he is the ninth of nine or the fourth of four; rather, one says the fourth of four by way of annexation, but you say the fourth of three, this is the saying of Al-Farra' and other experts.
والتاسوعاء: اليوم التاسع من المحرم، وقيل هو يوم العاشوراء، وأظنه مولدا.
And 'Al-Tasū'ā'' is the ninth day of Muharram, and it is said it is the day of Ashura, and I think it is a neologism.
وفي حديث ابن عباس، رضي الله عنهما: لئن بقيت إلى قابل لأصومن التاسع يعني عاشوراء، كأنه تأول فيه عشر الورد أنها تسعة أيام.
And in the hadith of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them: 'If I remain until next year, I will fast the ninth', meaning Ashura, as if he interpreted the camel's watering cycle as nine days.
والتسع من أظماء الإبل: أن ترد إلى تسعة أيام، والإبل تواسع.
And 'al-tis'' (nine) from the camel's watering cycles: is to return to water every nine days, and the camels 'tuwāsi' (water every nine days).
وأتسع القوم فهم متسعون إذا وردت إبلهم لتسعة أيام وثماني ليال.
And the people 'attasa'ū' (reached nine days of water) and they are 'mutassi'ūn' (settled for nine days) if their camels' water supply is for nine days and eight nights.
والثلاث التسع مثال الصرد: الليلة السابعة والثامنة والتاسعة من الشهر، وهي بعد النفل لأن آخر ليلة منها هي التاسعة، وقيل: هي الليالي الثلاث من أول الشهر، والأول أقيس.
And 'al-thalāth al-tis'' (the three of nine) like 'al-sard': the seventh, eighth, and ninth nights of the month, and they are after the nawfal nights because the last night of them is the ninth, and it is said: they are the three nights from the beginning of the month, and the first is more analogous.
والعشير والتسيع: بمعنى العشر والتسع.
And 'al-'ushīr' and 'al-tasī'' are in the meaning of 'al-'ushr' (ten) and 'al-tis'' (nine).
والتسع، بالضم، والتسيع: جزء من تسعة يطرد في جميع هذه الكسور عند بعضهم؛ قال شمر: ولم أسمع تسيعا إلا لأبي زيد.
And 'al-tis'' (the ninth part), with damma, and 'al-tasī'' (the ninth part): is a part of nine, which applies to all these fractions according to some; Shammir said: I have not heard 'tasī'' except from Abu Zayd.

And His saying the Almighty: 'And We had certainly given Moses nine clear signs' - it was said in interpretation: they are the taking of Pharaoh's people by years, meaning drought, until their fruits perished and their livestock from the desert dwellers perished, and among them is Moses bringing forth his hand, peace be upon him, white to the beholders, and among them is his casting his staff, and behold, it is a clear serpent, and among them is Allah the Almighty sending upon them the flood, locusts, lice, frogs, blood, the splitting of the sea, and among His signs is the bursting forth of the rock.
وقال الليث: رجل متسع وهو المنكمش الماضي في أمره؛ قال الأزهري: ولا أعرف ما قال إلا أن يكون مفتعلا من السعة، وإذا كان كذلك فليس من هذا الباب.
And Al-Layth said: a 'mutassi'' man is one who is quick and decisive in his affair; Al-Azhari said: I do not know what he said unless it is derived from 'al-si'ah' (vastness), and if so, it is not from this chapter.
قال: وفي نسخة من كتاب الليث مستع، وهو المنكمش الماضي في أمره، ويقال مسدع لغة، قال: ورجل مستع أي سريع.
He said: and in a copy of Al-Layth's book, 'musta'' which is the quick and decisive one in his affair, and it is said 'musda'' is a dialectal variant, he said: and a 'musta'' man means swift.
