الترع امتلاء الشيء، وقد أترعت الإناء ولم أسمع ترع الإناء،

Al-tur' is the fullness of a thing, and I have said 'atr'a the vessel' but I have not heard 'tar'a the vessel',

وسحاب ترع: كثير المطر؛

And a cloud is tur'a: abundant with rain;

وترع الرجل ترعا، فهو ترع: اقتحم الأمور مرحا ونشاطا.

And the man became tr'a, tr'an, so he is tr'a: he rushed into matters with exuberance and energy.

ورجل ترع: فيه عجلة، وقيل: هو المستعد للشر والغضب السريع إليهما؛

And a man is tr'a: he has haste, and it is said: he is ready for evil and quick to anger;

والترع: السفيه السريع إلى الشر.

And al-tur' is the foolish one, quick to evil.

والترعة من النساء: الفاحشة الخفيفة.

And al-tur'a among women is the immodest, frivolous one.

وتترع إلى الشيء: تسرع.

And one tatarr'a to a thing: he hastens.

والمتترع: الشرير المسارع إلى ما لا ينبغي له؛

And al-mutatarr' is the wicked one, hastening to what is not appropriate for him;

هو ترع عتل.

He is tr'a, 'atala.

وقد ترع ترعا وعتل عتلا إذا كان سريعا إلى الشر.

And he became tr'a, tr'an, and 'atala, 'atala, if he was quick to evil.

فلان ذو مترعة إذا كان لا يغضب ولا يعجل،

فما ترعني ؛

وقيل: ترعه عن وجهه ثناه وصرفه.

And it is said: tr'a him from his way means to turn him back and divert him.

والترعة: الدرجة، وقيل: الروضة على المكان المرتفع خاصة،

And al-tur'a is the step, and it is said: the meadow on elevated ground specifically,

فإذا كانت في المكان المطمئن فهي روضة، وقيل: الترعة المتن المرتفع من الأرض؛

And if it is in a low-lying place, it is a meadow, and it is said: al-tur'a is the elevated ridge of the land;

هو مأخوذ من الإناء المترع،

هاجوا الرحيل، وقالوا: إن مشربكم ... ماء الزنانير من ماوية الترع

They stirred up the departure, and they said: indeed your drink ... is the water of the Zananir from the waters of al-tur'

فهو جمع الترعة من الأرض، وهو على بدل من قوله ماء الزنانير كأنه قال غدران ماء الزنانير، وهي موضع.

So it is the plural of al-tur'a from the land, and it is a substitute for the phrase 'water of the Zananir' as if he said 'pools of the water of al-tur'', and it is a place.

والترعة: الباب.

And al-tur'a is the door.

إن منبري هذا على ترعة من ترع الجنة ،

Indeed, this pulpit of mine is on a tur'a from the tur' of Paradise,

قيل فيه: الترعة الباب، كأنه قال منبري على باب من أبواب الجنة ،

It is said about it: al-tur'a is the door, as if he said my pulpit is at a door from the doors of Paradise,

وهو الوجه، وقيل: الترعة المرقاة من المنبر،

And it is the correct interpretation, and it is said: al-tur'a is the step of the pulpit,

معناه أن الصلاة والذكر في هذا الموضع يؤديان إلى الجنة فكأنه قطعة منها،

Its meaning is that prayer and remembrance in this place lead to Paradise, so it is as if it is a piece of it,

وكذلك قوله في الحديث الآخر: ارتعوا في رياض الجنة أي مجالس الذكر،

And likewise his saying in another hadith: 'Arta'u in the meadows of Paradise', meaning the gatherings of remembrance,

من أراد أن يرتع في رياض الجنة فليقرأ أل حم ،

Whoever wishes to 'arta' in the meadows of Paradise should recite Ha Mim,

وهذا المعنى من الاستعارة في الحديث كثير، كقوله عائد المريض في مخارف الجنة والجنة تحت بارقة السيوف وتحت أقدام الأمهات أي أن هذه الأشياء تؤدي إلى الجنة،

And this meaning of metaphor in hadith is abundant, like his saying 'the visitor of the sick is in the expanses of Paradise', and 'Paradise is under the gleam of swords' and 'under the feet of mothers', meaning these things lead to Paradise,

وقيل: الترعة في الحديث الدرجة، وقيل: الروضة.

And it is said: al-tur'a in the hadith is the step, and it is said: the meadow.

إن قدمي على ترعة من ترع الحوض ،

Indeed, my foot is on a tur'a from the tur' of the basin,

الترعة مقام الشاربة من الحوض.

Al-tur'a is the place of drinking from the basin.

ترعة الحوض مفتح الماء إليه، ومنه يقال: أترعت الحوض إتراعا إذا ملأته، وأترعت الإناء، فهو مترع.

Tur'at al-hawd is the opening of water to it, and from this it is said: 'I atr'a'd the basin, atr'an, if I filled it', and 'I atr'a'd the vessel', and it is matr'a.

والتراع: البواب؛

And al-tira' is the doorkeeper;

يخيرني تراعه بين حلقة ... أزوم، إذا عضت، وكبل مضبب

His tira' gives me a choice between a collar... that bites when it grips, and a bound fetter

وقرأت في مصحف أبي بن كعب: وترعت الأبواب، قال: هو في معنى غلقت الأبواب.

And I read in the Mus'haf of Ubayy ibn Ka'b: 'wa tara'a al-abwab', he said: it means 'closed the doors'.

والترعة: فم الجدول ينفجر من النهر، والجمع كالجمع.

And al-tur'a is the mouth of the stream that bursts forth from the river, and the plural is like the plural.

والترعة أفواه الجداول،

And al-tur'a are the mouths of streams,

صوابه والترع جمع ترعة أفواه الجداول.

Indeed, my foot is on a tur'a from the tur' of Paradise,

وقال: إن عبدا من عباد الله خيره ربه بين أن يعيش في الدنيا ما شاء وبين أن يأكل في الدنيا ما شاء وبين لقائه فاختار العبد لقاء ربه،

And he said: Indeed, a servant of Allah's servants, his Lord gave him a choice between living in this world as long as he wished, and eating in this world as much as he wished, and meeting Him, so the servant chose to meet his Lord,

قال: فبكى أبو بكر، رضي الله عنه، حين قالها وقال: بل نفديك يا رسول الله بآبائنا.

He said: So Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, wept when he said it and said: Rather, we ransom you, O Messenger of Allah, with our fathers and mothers.

والترعة: مسيل الماء إلى الروضة، والجمع من كل ذلك ترع.

And al-tur'a is the channel of water to the meadow, and the plural of all of that is tur'.

والترعة: شجرة صغيرة تنبت مع البقل وتيبس معه هي أحب الشجر إلى الحمير.

And al-tur'a is a small tree that grows with the herbs and dries up with them; it is the most beloved tree to donkeys.

وسير أترع: شديد،

And a journey that is atr'a: intense,

والترياع، بكسر التاء وإسكان الراء: موضع.

And al-tiryā', with kasra on the ta' and sukun on the ra': a place.
