Jarir said: And indeed I met knights from our kin, ... they afflicted you with the affliction of the 'ayyār's locust.

قال عمر بن عبد العزيز الموت فقال: غنظ ليس كالغنظ، وكظ ليس كالكظ؛

Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz mentioned death and said: Affliction is not like [this] affliction, and suffocation is not like [this] suffocation.

أبو عبيد: الغنظ أشد الكرب والجهد، وكان أبو عبيدة يقول: هو أن يشرف الرجل على الموت من الكرب والشدة ثم يفلت.

Abu Ubayd: Al-ghanẓ is the most severe distress and effort, and Abu Ubaydah used to say: it is when a man is on the verge of death from distress and severity and then escapes.

غنظه يغنظه غنظا إذا بلغ به ذلك وملأه غيظا،

He afflicted him, afflicting him with hardship (ghanẓan), if it reached that point with him and filled him with rage,

ويقال أيضا: غانظه غناظا؛ قال الفقعسي: تنتح ذفراه من الغناظ

And it is also said: he contended with him intensely (ghānaẓahu ghanāẓan); Al-Fuq'asi said: His armpit sweats from the intense contention.

وغنظه، فهو مغنوظ أي جهده وشق عليه؛

And it afflicted him, so he is afflicted (maghnuẓ), meaning it exhausted him and made things difficult for him;

قال الشاعر: إذا غنظونا ظالمين أعاننا، ... على غنظهم، من من الله واسع

A poet said: If they afflict us unjustly, He aids us ... against their affliction, from God's abundant grace.

And a man of intense struggle (raghulun maghanẓ); A poet said: A rough, strong man, one who struggles intensely, ... wild, except that he is persistent.

وغنظى به أي ندد به وأسمعه المكروه،

And he reproached him with it (ghanẓā bihi), meaning he denounced him and made him hear unpleasant things,

وفي الحديث: أغيظ رجل على الله يوم القيامة وأخبثه وأغيظه عليه رجل تسمى بملك الأملاك ،

And in the hadith: The most wrathful man to Allah on the Day of Resurrection, and the most wicked, and the most wrathful to Him is a man named 'King of Kings',

قال ابن الأثير: قال بعضهم لا وجه لتكرار لفظتي أغيظ في الحديث، ولعله أغنظ، بالنون، من الغنظ وهو شدة الكرب، والله أعلم.

Ibn al-Athir said: Some said there is no reason for repeating the word 'aghyaẓ' twice in the hadith, and perhaps it is 'aghnaẓ' (with a noon), from al-ghanẓ, which is intense distress, and Allah knows best.
