By God, we did not take it except by forgiveness, without a whip and without a nawt, meaning without beating and without hanging.
المتعلق بها كالنوط المذبذب ؛ أراد ما يناط برحل الراكب من قعب أو غيره فهو أبدا يتحرك.
The one attached to it is like the wavering nawt; he meant what is hung on the rider's saddle from a pail or other thing, it is always moving.

A righteous man saw in a dream tonight that Abu Bakr was attached to the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, meaning hung.
قال لحفار البئر: أخسفت أم أوشلت؟ فقال: لا واحد منهما ولكن نيطا بين الأمرين أي وسطا بين القليل والكثير، كأنه معلق بينهما.
He said to the well digger: Did you dig deep or find little water? He said: Neither, but it was niṭa between the two matters, meaning in the middle between little and much, as if it were suspended between them.
ونياط كل شيء: معلقه كنياط القوس والقربة.
And the niyat of everything: its hanging part, like the niyat of a bow and a waterskin.

والنياط: الفؤاد.

والنياط: عرق علق به القلب من الوتين، فإذا قطع مات صاحبه، وهو النيط أيضا؛ ومنه قولهم: رماه الله بالنيط أي بالموت.

And a land far in its niyat, ... unknown, that deceives the steps of the sinner.
إذا انتاطت المغازي أي إذا بعدت وهو من نياط المفازة وهو بعدها.
When the campaigns became distant, meaning when they became far, and it is from the niyat of the desert, which is its distance.
وانتاطت الدار بعدت.
And the dwelling became distant.
عليك بصاحبك الأقدم فإنك تجده على مودة واحدة وإن قدم العهد وانتاطت الدار.
Stick to your old companion, for you will find him with one affection, even if the time is long and the dwelling has become distant.

والنيط من الآبار: التي يجري ماؤها معلقا ينحدر من أجوالها إلى مجمها.
And the nayṭ from the wells: those whose water flows suspended, descending from their upper parts to their collection point.
بئر نيط إذا حفرت فأتى الماء من جانب منها فسال إلى قعرها ولم تعن من قعرها بشيء.
A well is niyt if it is dug and water comes from one side of it and flows to its bottom, and it is not drawn from its bottom.
لا تستقي دلاؤها من نيط، ... ولا بعيد قعرها مخروط
Its buckets do not draw from a nayṭ, ... nor is its bottom far and conical.
وانتاط الشيء: اقتضبه برأيه من غير مشورة.
And he originated the matter: he devised it with his opinion without consultation.
والنوط: الجلة الصغيرة فيها التمر ونحوه، والجمع أنواط ونياط.
And the nawt: the small cluster containing dates and the like, and the plural is anwat and niyat.
فأهدوا له نوطا من تعضوض هجر أي أهدوا له جلة صغيرة من تمر التعضوض.
So they gifted him a nawt of Ta'ḍūḍ of Hajar, meaning they gifted him a small cluster of Ta'ḍūḍ dates.
أطعمنا من بقية القوس الذي في نوطك.
Feed us from the remainder of the bow that is in your nawt.
إن ضج فزده وقرا، وإن أعيا فزده نوطا، وإن جرجر فزده ثقلا.
If he complains, add a burden to him; if he is exhausted, add a nawt to him; if he groans, add weight to him.
ويقال للدعي ينتمي إلى قوم: منوط مذبذب؛ سمي مذبذبا لأنه لا يدري إلى من ينتمي فالريح تذبذبه يمينا وشمالا.
And a spurious claimant to a people is called manūt, wavering; he is called wavering because he does not know to whom he belongs, so the wind wavers him right and left.

وأنت دعي نيط في آل هاشم، ... كما نيط خلف الراكب القدح الفرد
And you are a spurious claimant attached to the family of Hashim, ... like the single cup attached behind the rider.
للماء في النحر منها نوطة عجب
For water in its throat, there is a wondrous notah.
ولا علم لي ما نوطة مستكنة، ... ولا أي من فارقت أسقي سقائيا
And I have no knowledge of what a hidden notah is, ... nor which of those I left behind I would water with my waterskin.
ويقال للبعير إذا ورم نحره وأرفاغه: نيطت له نوطة، وبعير منوط وقد نيط له وبه نوطة إذا كان في حلقه ورم.
And it is said of a camel when its neck and flanks swell: a notah has occurred for it, and a camel is manūt and has had a notah occur for it, and has a notah if there is a swelling in its throat.
وفي الحديث : بعير له قد نيط.
And in the hadith: a camel of his has been afflicted with nawt.
يقال: نيط الجمل، فهو منوط إذا أصابه النوط، وهي غدة تصيبه في بطنه فتقتله.
It is said: the camel is niṭ, and it is manūt if it is afflicted with nawt, which is a gland that affects it in its belly and kills it.
والنوطة: ما ينصب من الرحاب من البلد الظاهر الذي به الغضا.
And the notah: what is erected from the open lands of the apparent country where there is ghada.
والنوطة: الأرض يكثر بها الطلح، وليست بواحدة، وربما كانت فيه نياط تجتمع جماعات منه ينقطع أعلاها وأسفلها.
And the notah: land where acacia is abundant, and it is not singular, and perhaps in it are niyat where groups gather from it, their tops and bottoms cut off.
والنوطة ليست بواد ضخم ولا بتلعة هي بينهما.
And the notah is not a large valley nor a stream, it is between them.
والنوطة: المكان في وسطه شجر، وقيل: مكان فيه طرفاء خاصة.
And the notah: the place with trees in its middle, and it is said: a place with specific tamarisks.
والنوطة: الموضع المرتفع عن الماء؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.
And the notah: the place elevated from the water; according to Ibn al-A'rabi.
وإنا لبنوطة فجاء بجار الضبع أي بسيل يجر الضبع من كثرته.
And we were in a nutah, and a stream came carrying the hyena, meaning a flood that dragged the hyena due to its abundance.
والتنوط والتنوط: طائر نحو القارية سوادا تركب عشها بين عودين أو على عود واحد فتطيل عشها فلا يصل الرجل إلى بيضها حتى يدخل يده إلى المنكب.
And the tanawwut and the tanawwut: a bird like the qariyah, black, that builds its nest between two branches or on one branch and lengthens its nest so that a man cannot reach its eggs until he puts his hand up to his shoulder.
تقطع أعناق التنوط بالضحى، ... وتفرس في الظلماء أفعى الأجارع
The necks of the tanawut are cut in the morning, ... and the vipers of the plains are hunted in the darkness.
إنما سمي تنوطا لأنه يدلي خيوطا من شجرة ثم يفرخ فيها.
It is only called tanawut because it dangles threads from a tree and then nests in them.
ذات أنواط: شجرة كانت تعبد في الجاهلية، وفي الحديث : اجعل لنا ذات أنواط ، قال ابن الأثير: هي اسم سمرة بعينها كانت للمشركين ينوطون بها سلاحهم أي يعلقونه بها ويعكفون حولها، فسألوه أن يجعل لهم مثلها فنهاهم عن ذلك.
Dhat Anwat: a tree that was worshipped in the Jahiliyyah, and in the hadith: Make for us a Dhat Anwat. Ibn al-Athir said: It is the name of a specific samrah tree that the polytheists used to hang their weapons on, meaning they would hang them on it and circumambulate around it, so they asked him to make one for them like it, and he forbade them from that.
وفي الحديث: أنه أبصر في بعض أسفاره شجرة دفواء تسمى ذات أنواط.
And in the hadith: he saw on one of his journeys a sprawling tree called Dhat Anwat.
ويقال: نوطة من طلح كما يقال عيص من سدر وأيكة من أثل وفرش من عرفط ووهط من عشر وغال من سلم وسليل من سمر وقصيمة من غضا ومن رمث وصريمة من غضا ومن سلم وحرجة من شجر.
And it is said: a notah of acacia, just as it is said: a thicket of lote, and a grove of tamarisk, and a patch of 'urfut, and a low-lying area of 'ashar, and a valley of salm, and a ravine of samr, and a small clump of ghada and ramth, and a small patch of ghada and salm, and a dense area of trees.
والمدات الثلاث منوطات بالهمز، ولذلك قال بعض العرب في الوقوف: افعلئ افعلأ افعلؤ، فهمزوا الألف والياء والواو حين وقفوا.
And the three lengthened vowels are manutat with hamza, and therefore some Arabs said when stopping: if'alaa, if'alaa, if'aluu, so they hamzated the alif, ya, and waw when they stopped.
