ومط الشيء يمطه مطا: مده.
And he stretched a thing, stretching it, a stretching: he extended it.
وفي حديث عمر، رضي الله عنه، وذكر الطلاء: فأدخل فيه إصبعه ثم رفعها فتبعها يتمطط أي ثخينا.
And in the hadith of Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, mentioning the tar: he put his finger in it, then lifted it, and it followed, stretching out, meaning it was thick.
وفي حديث سعد: ولا تمطوا بآمين أي لا تمدوا.
And in the hadith of Sa'd: And do not stretch 'Amin', meaning do not prolong it.
ومط أنامله: مدها كأنه يخاطب بها.
And he stretched his fingertips: he extended them as if addressing them.
ومط حاجبيه أي مدهما وتكبر.
And he stretched his eyebrows, meaning he extended them and was arrogant.
والمط: سعة الخطو، وقد مط يمط ومط خطه وخطوه: مده ووسعه.
And al-mat: spaciousness of stride, and he stretched, he stretches, and he stretched his pace and his stride: he extended and widened it.
ومط الطائر جناحيه: مدهما.
And the bird stretched its wings: it extended them.
والمطمطة: مد الكلام وتطويله.
And al-matmata: stretching of speech and prolonging it.
ومط شدقه: مد في كلامه، وهو المطط.
And he stretched his cheek: he extended it in his speech, and it is al-matat.
التهذيب: ومطمط إذا توانى في خطه وكلامه.
Al-Tahdhib: And matmata if he was slow in his writing and speech.
والمطيطة: الماء الكدر الخاثر يبقى في الحوض، فهو يتمطط أي يتلزج ويمتد.
And al-mutayṭita: the turbid, thick water remaining in the basin, so it stretches, meaning it becomes viscous and extends.
وفي حديث أبي ذر: إنا نأكل الخطائط ونرد المطائط ؛ هي الماء المختلط بالطين، واحدته مطيطة، وقيل: هي البقية من الماء الكدر يبقى في أسفل الحوض.
And in the hadith of Abu Dharr: We eat the muddy patches and drink the muddy waters; it is water mixed with mud, its singular is mutayṭita, and it is said: it is the remainder of turbid water left at the bottom of the basin.
وصلا مطاط ومطاط ومطائط: ممتد؛ وأنشد ثعلب: أعددت للحوض، إذا ما نضبا،، ... بكرة شيزى ومطاطا سلهبا
And a stretched-out loin, and stretched-out, and stretched-out: extended; and Tha'lab recited: I prepared for the basin, when it ran dry, ... a pulley of shiza and a long, stretched-out rope.
والمطائط: مواضع حفر قوائم الدواب في الأرض تجتمع فيها الرداغ؛ وأنشد: فلم يبق إلا نطفة من مطيطة، ... من الأرض، فاستصفينها بالجحافل
And al-mata'iṭ: places where the hooves of animals dig in the ground where mud collects; and he recited: Nothing remained but a drop from a muddy pool, ... from the earth, so we purified it with the troops.
ابن الأعرابي: المطط الطوال من جميع الحيوان.
Ibn al-A'rabi: Al-matat are the tall ones among all animals.
وتمطط أي تمدد.
And tamattata means to stretch out.
والتمطي: التمدد وهو من محول التضعيف، وأصله التمطط، وقيل: هو من المطواء، فإن كان ذلك فليس هذا بابه.
And al-tamatti: stretching out, and it is from the intensive form of the doubled root, and its origin is al-tamattut, and it is said: it is from al-mitwa', and if that is the case, then this is not its chapter.
والمطيطى، مقصور؛ عن كراع، والمطيطاء، كل ذلك: مشية التبختر.
And al-mutayṭi, shortened; from Kura', and al-mutayṭā', all of that: the gait of strutting.
ثم ذهب إلى أهله يتمطى ؛ هو التبختر، قال الفراء: أي يتبختر لأن الظهر هو المطا فيلوي ظهره تبخترا، قال: ونزلت في أبي جهل.
Then he went to his family, strutting; it is swaggering, said Al-Farra': meaning he swaggered because the back is the loin, so he twisted his back in swaggering, he said: and it was revealed about Abu Jahl.
إذا مشت أمتي المطيطاء وخدمتهم فارس والروم كان بأسهم بينهم.
When my nation walks with a strutting gait and Persia and Rome serve them, their might will be among them.
قال الأصمعي وغيره: المطيطى، بالمد والقصر، التبختر ومد اليدين في المشي.
Al-Asma'i and others said: Al-mutayṭi, with elongation and shortening, is strutting and extending the hands in walking.
وقال أبو عبيد: من ذهب بالتمطي إلى المطيط فإنه يذهب به مذهب تظنيت من الظن وتقضيت من التقضض، وكذلك التمطي يريد التمطط.
And Abu Ubaid said: Whoever takes al-tamatti to al-mutayṭi, he takes it in the sense of 'I suspected' from 'suspicion' and 'I broke into pieces' from 'breaking into pieces', and likewise al-tamatti means al-tamattut.
قال أبو منصور: والمط والمطو والمد واحد.
Abu Mansur said: And al-mat, and al-matw, and al-madd are one.
الصحاح: المطيطاء، بضم الميم ممدود، التبختر ومد اليدين في المشي.
Al-Sihah: Al-mutayṭā', with a damma on the mim and elongated, is strutting and extending the hands in walking.
ويقال: مطوت ومططت بمعنى مددت وهي من المصغرات التي لم يستعمل لها مكبر.
And it is said: matawtu and matatatu meaning I stretched, and it is from the diminutives for which no augmentative is used.
وفي حديث أبي بكر، رضي الله عنه: أنه مر على بلال وقد مطي به في الشمس يعذب أي مد وبطح في الشمس.
And in the hadith of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him: He passed by Bilal, and he had been stretched out in the sun being tortured, meaning laid out and prostrated in the sun.
وفي حديث خزيمة: وتركت المطي هارا ؛ المطي جمع مطية وهي الناقة التي يركب مطاها أي ظهرها، ويقال يمطى بها في السير أي يمد، والله أعلم.
And in the hadith of Khuzaymah: And you left the mounts fleeing; al-muti is the plural of mutiyyah, which is the she-camel whose back is ridden, and it is said: it is made to travel in the journey, meaning it is stretched, and Allah knows best.
