وَفِي حَدِيثِ طَهْفَةَ: «لا تَلَطَّطْ فِي الزَّكَاةِ» أَيْ لا تَمْنَعْهَا.

And in the hadith of Ṭahfah: 'Do not withhold in Zakat', meaning do not prevent it.

And 'al-laṭṭ' in news: is to conceal it and show something else, and it is also from covering; and from it is the saying of the poet:

وَإِذَا أَتَانِي سَائِلٌ، لَمْ أَعْتَلِلْ، ... لا لَطَّ مِنْ دُونِ السَّوَامِ حِجَابِي

And if a beggar comes to me, I do not make excuses, ... no covering hides me from the herds.

وَلَطَّ عَلَيْهِ الخَبَرَ لَطًّا: لَوَاهُ وَكََتَمَهُ.

And he twisted the news against him, with twisting: he distorted it and concealed it.

وَالنَّاقَةُ تَلُطُّ بِذَنَبِهَا إِذَا أَلْزَقَتْ بِفَرْجِهَا وَأَدْخَلَتْهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهَا؛

And the she-camel tucks its tail when it sticks it to its vulva and inserts it between its thighs;

وَقَدِمَ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ، صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَعْشَى بَنِي مَازِنٍ فَشَكَى إِلَيْهِ حَلِيلَتَهُ وَأَنْشَدَ:

And Al-A'sha of Banu Mazin came to the Prophet, peace be upon him, and complained to him about his wife and recited:

إِلَيْكَ أَشْكُو ذِرْبَةً مِنَ الذَّرَبِ، ... أَخْلَفَتِ العَهْدَ وَلَطَّتْ بِالذَّنَبِ

To you I complain of a sharp-tongued woman, ... she broke the covenant and tucked her tail.

أَرَادَ أَنَّهَا مَنَعَتْهُ بُضْعَهَا وَمَوْضِعَ حَاجَتِهِ مِنْهَا، كَمَا تَلُطُّ النَّاقَةُ بِذَنَبِهَا إِذَا امْتَنَعَتْ عَلَى الفَحْلِ أَنْ يَضْرِبَهَا وَسَدَّتْ فَرْجَهَا بِهِ، وَقِيلَ: أَرَادَ تَوَارَتْ وَأَخْفَتْ شَخْصَهَا عَنْهُ كَمَا تُخْفِي النَّاقَةُ فَرْجَهَا بِذَنَبِهَا.

He meant that she prevented him from her intimacy and the place of his need from her, just as the she-camel tucks its tail when it refuses the male to mount it and blocks its vulva with it. And it was said: he meant she hid and concealed her person from him, just as the she-camel hides its vulva with its tail.

وَلَطَّتِ النَّاقَةُ بِذَنَبِهَا تَلُطُّ لَطًا: أَدْخَلَتْهُ بَيْنَ فَخِذَيْهَا؛ وَأَنْشَدَ ابْنُ بَرِّيٍّ لِقَيْسِ بْنِ الخَطِيمِ:

And the she-camel tucked its tail, it tucks, with tucking: it inserted it between its thighs; and Ibn Barrī recited for Qays bin Al-Khaṭīm:

لَيَالٍ لَنَا، وِدُّهَا مَنْصِبٌ، ... إِذَا الشَّوْلُ لَطَّتْ بِأَذْنَابِهَا

Nights for us, its love is a burden, ... when the she-camels tuck their tails.

وَلَطَ البَابَ لَطًا: أَغْلَقَهُ.

And he closed the door, with closing: he shut it.

وَلَطَّطْتُ بِفُلانٍ أَلُطُّهُ لَطًا إِذَا لَزِمْتُهُ، وَكَذَلِكَ أَلَظَّظْتُ بِهِ إِلْظَاظًا، وَالأَوَّلُ بِالطَّاءِ، رَوَاهُ أَبُو عُبَيْدٍ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ فِي بَابِ لُزُومِ الرَّجُلِ صَاحِبَهُ.

And I stuck to so-and-so, I stick to him, with sticking, if I adhered to him, and likewise I insisted on him, with insistence, and the first is with Ṭāʾ. Abu Ubayd narrated it from Abu Ubaydah in the chapter on a man adhering to his companion.

وَلَطَ بِالأَمْرِ يَلُطُّ لَطًا: لَزِمَهُ.

And he adhered to the matter, he adheres, with adhering: he stuck to it.

وَالَّلاطُ: العَقْدُ، وَقِيلَ: هُوَ القِلادَةُ مِنْ حَبِّ الحَنْظَلِ المَصْبُوغِ، وَالجَمْعُ لَطَاطٌ؛

And 'al-laṭṭ': the contract, and it was said: it is the necklace of dyed colocynth seeds, and the plural is 'laṭāṭ';

وَتُرْسٌ مَلْطُوطٌ أَيْ مَكْبُوبٌ عَلَى وَجْهِهِ؛ قَالَ سَاعِدَةُ بْنُ جُؤْيَةَ:

And a shield 'malṭūṭ' meaning face down; Sa'idah bin Ju'ayyah said:

صَبَّ اللَّهِيفَ لَهَا السُّبُوبُ بِطُغْيَةٍ، ... تُنَبِّي العُقَابَ، كَمَا يُلَطُّ المُجَنَّبُ

May the flowing waters pour upon her with a mound, ... it startles the eagle, as the shield is laid face down.

وَالمُجَنَّبُ: التُّرْسُ؛ أَرَادَ أَنَّ هَذِهِ الطُّغْيَةَ مِثْلُ ظَهْرِ التُّرْسِ إِذَا كَبَبْتَهُ.

And 'al-mujannab': the shield; he meant that this mound is like the back of the shield when you lay it face down.

وَالمَلْطَاطُ: أَعْلَى حَرْفِ الجَبَلِ وَصَحْنُ الدَّارِ، وَالمِيمُ فِي كُلِّهَا زَائِدَةٌ؛

And 'al-malṭāṭ': the top edge of the mountain and the courtyard of the house, and the 'mīm' in all of them is superfluous;

وَقَوْلُ الرَّاجِزِ: يَمْتَلِخُ العَيْنَيْنِ بِانْتِشَاطٍ، ... وَفَرْوَةُ الرَّأْسِ عَنِ المَلْطَاطِ

And the rajaz's saying: He plucks out the eyes with vigor, ... and the scalp from the prominent part of the head.

وَالمَلْطَاطُ طَرِيقٌ عَلَى سَاحِلِ البَحْرِ؛ قَالَ رُؤْبَةُ:

And 'al-malṭāṭ' is a path on the seashore; Ru'bah said:

نَحْنُ جَمَعْنَا النَّاسَ بِالمَلْطَاطِ، ... فِي وَرْطَةٍ، وَأَيْمَا إِيرَاطِ

We gathered the people by the seashore, ... in a predicament, and what a predicament.

وَأَبُو زَيْدٍ: يُقَالُ هَذَا لَطَاطُ الجَبَلِ «١» وَثَلاثَةُ أَلْطَةٍ، وَهُوَ طَرِيقٌ فِي عَرْضِ الجَبَلِ، وَالقَطَاطُ حَافَّةُ أَعْلَى الكَهْفِ وَهِيَ ثَلاثَةُ أَقْطَةٍ.

And Abu Zayd: It is said, 'This is the mountain path' and 'three paths', and it is a path across the mountain, and 'al-qaṭāṭ' is the edge of the top of the cave, and it is three edges.

وَيُقَالُ لِصَوْبَجِ الخَبَّازِ: المَلْطَاطُ وَالمِرْقَاقُ.

And for the baker's flatbread: 'al-malṭāṭ' and 'al-mirqāq'.

وَاللَّطْلَطُ: الغَلِيظُ الأَسْنَانِ؛ قَالَ جَرِيرٌ:

And 'al-laṭlaṭ': thick-toothed; Jarir said:

تَفْتَرُّ عَنْ قَرْدِ المَنَابِتِ لَطْلَطًا، ... مِثْلَ العِجَانِ، وَضِرْسُهَا كَالحَافِرِ

She parts her lips revealing thick teeth, ... like the gums, and her molar is like a hoof.

وَاللَّطْلَطُ: النَّاقَةُ الهَرِمَةُ.

And 'al-laṭlaṭ': the aged she-camel.

وَاللَّطْلَطُ: العَجُوزُ.

And 'al-laṭlaṭ': the old woman.

وَقَالَ الأَصْمَعِيُّ: اللَّطْلَطُ العَجُوزُ الكَبِيرَةُ، وَقَالَ أَبُو عَمْرٍو: هِيَ مِنَ النُّوقِ المُسِنَّةِ الَّتِي قَدْ أَكَلَ أَسْنَانَهَا.

And Al-Asma'i said: 'al-laṭlaṭ' is the very old woman, and Abu Amr said: it is from the aged she-camels whose teeth have been worn down.

وَالأَلَطُ: الَّذِي سَقَطَتْ أَسْنَانُهُ أَوْ تَأَكَّلَتْ وَبَقِيَتْ أُصُولُهَا، يُقَالُ: رَجُلٌ أَلَطٌ بَيِّنُ اللَّطَطِ، وَمِنْهُ قِيلَ لِلعَجُوزِ لَطْلَطٌ، وَلِلنَّاقَةِ المُسِنَّةِ لَطْلَطٌ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ أَسْنَانُهَا.

And 'al-alaṭ': one whose teeth have fallen out or worn away, with only the roots remaining. It is said: a man is 'alaṭ' with clear toothlessness, and from this, an old woman is called 'laṭlaṭ', and an aged she-camel is called 'laṭlaṭ' when her teeth have fallen out.

وَالمَلْطَاطُ رَحَى البَزْرِ.

And 'al-malṭāṭ' is the seed mill.

وَالمِلَاطُ: خَشَبَةُ البَزْرِ «٢»؛ وَقَالَ الرَّاجِزُ:

And 'al-milāṭ': the seed-grinding stick; and the rajaz said:

فَرَشَطَ لَمَّا كَرِهَ الفِرْشَاطَ، ... بِفِيشَةٍ كَأَنَّهَا مِلْطَاطُ

He spread it when he disliked the spreading, ... with a tool like a seed-grinding stick.
