ليأتينك مني منطق قذع ... باق، كما دنس القبطية الودك

From me will come to you sharp speech... lasting, as grease stains al-Qubtiyyah.

فالإنسان قبطي، بالكسر، والثوب قبطي، بالضم.

So a person is Qubṭiyy (with kasra), and the garment is Quvṭiyy (with damma).

والقباطي ثياب إلى الدقة والرقة والبياض؛ قال الكميت يصف ثورا:

And al-Qabati are clothes of fineness, thinness, and whiteness; Al-Kumait said describing a bull:

لياخ كأن بالأتحمية مسبع ... إزارا، وفي قبطيه متجلبب

Liyakh, as if in al-Atḥamiyyah he is a bull... a lower garment, and in his Qabatiy he is cloaked.

وقيل: القبطري ثياب بيض، وزعم بعضهم أن هذا غلط، وقد قيل فيه: إن الراء زائدة مثل دمث ودمثر؛ وشاهده قول جرير:

And it is said: al-Qabṭariyy is white clothes, and some claimed this is a mistake, and it has been said about it: that the 'ra' is extra like in 'damth' and 'damthar'; and the evidence for it is the saying of Jarir:

قوم ترى صدأ الحديد عليهم، ... والقبطري من اليلامق سودا

A people you see the rust of iron upon them, ... and al-Qabṭariyy from al-Yalamiq are black.

كساني رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، قبطية ؛ القبطية: الثوب من ثياب مصر رقيقة بيضاء وكأنه منسوب إلى القبط وهم أهل مصر.

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, clothed me in a Qubtiyyah; al-Qubtiyyah: the garment of thin, white Egyptian clothes, and it is as if it is attributed to the Copts, who are the people of Egypt.

ما دلنا عليه إلا بياضه في سواد الليل كأنه قبطية.

Nothing guided us to him except his whiteness in the darkness of the night, like a Qubtiyyah.

أنه كسا امرأة قبطية فقال: مرها فلتتخذ تحتها غلالة لا تصف حجم عظامها ، وجمعها القباطي؛

That he clothed a woman in a Qubtiyyah and said: Tell her to wear a chemise underneath it so it does not describe the size of her bones, and its plural is al-Qabati;

لا تلبسوا نساءكم القباطي فإنه إن لا يشف فإنه يصف.

Do not let your women wear al-Qabati, for if it does not reveal (through transparency), it describes (the form).

أنه كان يجلل بدنه القباطي والأنماط.

That he used to cover his body with al-Qabati and al-Anmat.

والقنبيط: معروف؛ قال جندل:

And al-Qunabbiṭ: is known; Jandil said:

لكن يرون البصل الحريفا، ... والقنبيط معجبا طريفا

But they see the pungent onion, ... and al-Qunabbiṭ, wonderfully fresh.

ويقولون لبعض البقول قنبيط، قال أبو بكر: والصواب قنبيط، بالضم، واحدته قنبيطة؛ قال: وهذا البناء ليس من أمثلة العرب لأنه ليس في كلامهم فعليل.

And they call some vegetables Qunabbiṭ, Abu Bakr said: And the correct is Qunabbiṭ (with damma), its singular is Qunabbiṭah; he said: And this pattern is not from the Arabic forms because 'fa'alil' is not in their speech.
