And the she-camel failed to conceive, failing to become pregnant and failing to conceive for years without barrenness, and she is 'aa'it from camels that are 'uyut, 'uyut, 'uyTaat, and 'awT (the last according to one who said 'rusul'), and likewise a woman and a she-goat. And sometimes the she-camel's failure to conceive is due to her excessive fatness. And they said 'aa'it, 'ayT, 'awT, and 'awTaT, exaggerating thereby.
وفي حديث الزكاة: فاعمد إلى عناق معتاط ، قال ابن الأثير: المعتاط من الغنم التي امتنعت من الحبل لسمنها وكثرة شحمها وهي في الإبل التي لا تحمل سنوات من غير عقر، والذي جاء في الحديث أن المعتاط التي لم تلد وقد حان ولادها، وهذا بخلاف ما تقدم في عوط وعيط، قال ابن الأثير: إلا أن يريد بالولاد الحمل أي أنها لم تحمل وقد حان أن تحمل، وذلك من حيث معرفة سنها وأنها قد قاربت السن التي يحمل مثلها فيها، فسمي الحمل بالولادة، والميم والتاء زائدتان.
And in the hadith about Zakat: 'So aim for a young goat that has failed to conceive.' Ibn al-Athir said: Al-mu'taaT is from the sheep that refrain from conceiving due to their fatness and abundance of fat, and it is for camels that do not conceive for years without barrenness. And what came in the hadith is that al-mu'taaT is one that has not given birth and its time for birth has come. This is contrary to what preceded in 'awT and 'ayT. Ibn al-Athir said: Unless he means by 'birth' pregnancy, i.e., she has not become pregnant and it is time for her to become pregnant, based on knowing her age and that she has approached the age at which others like her become pregnant, so pregnancy is called 'birth', and the 'm' and 't' are additional.
والعوطط، عند سيبويه: اسم في معنى المصدر قلبت فيه الياء واوا ولم يجعل بمنزلة بيض حيث خرجت إلى مثالها هذا وصارت إلى أربعة أحرف وكأن الاسم هنا لا تحرك ياؤه ما دام على هذه العدة، وأنشد: مظاهرة نيا عتيقا وعوططا، ... فقد أحكما خلقا لها متباينا
And al-'awTaT, according to Sibawayh: is a noun in the meaning of a masdar where the 'ya' has been changed to a 'waw', and it is not considered like 'bayD' (eggs) since it has come to this form and become four letters. And it is as if the 'ya' of the noun here is not moved as long as it is on this count. And he recited: Supporting a young camel and one with prolonged infertility, ... they have perfected for her two distinct creations.
والعائط من الإبل: البكرة التي أدرك إنا رحمها فلم تلقح، وقد اعتاطت، وهي معتاط، والاسم العوطة والعوطط.
And al-'aa'it from camels: is the young she-camel whose womb has matured but has not conceived, and she has 'i'taaT, and she is 'mu'taaT', and the noun is al-'awTa and al-'awTaT.
والتعيط: أن ينبع حجر أو شجر أو عود فيخرج منه شبه ماء فيصمغ أو يسيل.
And al-ta'ayyuT: is for a stone, tree, or wood to spring forth, and something like water comes out of it, becoming resinous or flowing.
وتعيطت الذفرى بالعرق: سالت، قال الأزهري: وذفرى الجمل تتعيط بالعرق الأسود، وأنشد:
And the brow of the camel oozed with sweat: it flowed. Al-Azhari said: And the brow of the camel oozes with black sweat, and he recited:
تعيط ذفراها بجون كأنه ... كحيل، جرى من قنفذ الليت نابع
Its brows oozed with sweat, dark as if... kohl-eyed, flowing from the side of a hedgehog.
عيط عيط: كلمة ينادى بها عند السكر أو الغلبة، وقد عيط.
'AyT 'ayT: a word called out when drunk or overcome, and he has cried out.
قال الأزهري: عيط كلمة ينادي بها الأشر عند السكر يلهج به عند الغلبة، فإن لم يزد على واحدة قالوا: عيط، وإن رجع قالوا: عطعط.
Al-Azhari said: 'AyT is a word called out by the revelers when drunk, which they utter when overcome. If they do not exceed one utterance, they say: 'ayT, and if they repeat it, they say: 'aT'aT.
ويقال: عيط فلان بفلان إذا قال له عيط عيط.
And it is said: So-and-so called out 'ayT 'ayT' to so-and-so when he said to him 'ayT 'ayT'.
والتعيط: غضب الرجل واختلاطه وتكبره، قال ذو الرمة:
And al-ta'ayyuT: is a man's anger, his confusion, and his arrogance. Dhu al-Rummah said:
»والبغي من تعيط العياط
And oppression from the boisterousness of the revelers.
وقال: التعيط هاهنا الجلبة وصياح الأشر بقوله عيط.
And he said: Al-ta'ayyuT here means the clamor and the shouting of the revelers by saying 'ayT'.
ومعيط: موضع، قال ساعدة بن جؤية:
And Mu'ayT: a place. Sa'idah bin Ju'ayyah said:
هل اقتنى حدثان الدهر من أحد ... كانوا بمعيط، لا وخش ولا قزم؟
Has the passage of time preserved from anyone... who were in Mu'ayT, neither short nor stunted?
قال ابن جني: معيط مفعل من لفظ عيطاء واعتاطت إلا أنه شذ، وكان قياسه الإعلال معاط كمقام ومباع غير أن هذا الشذوذ في العلم أسهل منه في الجنس، ونظيره مريم ومكوزة.
Ibn Jinni said: Mu'ayT is a 'maf'al' from the form of 'ayTaa'' and 'i'taaT', but it is irregular. Its analogy would be 'ma'aaT' like 'maqaam' and 'mabaa'', but this irregularity in a proper noun is easier than in a common noun. Its parallels are Maryam and Makuzah.
