ويقال: هو أسلطهم لسانا، وامرأة سليطة أي صخابة.

And it is said: he is the most sharp-tongued among them, and a woman is salīṭah, meaning loud.

وإذا قالوا امرأة سليطة اللسان فله معنيان: أحدهما أنها حديدة اللسان، والثاني أنها طويلة اللسان.

And if they say a woman is salīṭat al-lisān, it has two meanings: one is that she is sharp-tongued, and the second is that she is long-tongued.

السلاطة مصدر السليط من الرجال والسليطة من النساء، والفعل سلطت، وذلك إذا طال لسانها واشتد صخبها.

Al-salāṭah is the source noun for the salīṭ man and the salīṭah woman, and the verb is salṭat, which is when her tongue became long and her clamor intensified.

السلط القوائم الطوال، والسليط عند عامة العرب الزيت، وعند أهل اليمن دهن السمسم؛ قال امرؤ القيس: أمال السليط بالذبال المفتل

Al-sulṭ: the long limbs, and al-salīṭ among the general Arabs is oil, and among the people of Yemen, sesame oil; Imru' al-Qays said: He poured the oil with the twisted wick.

وقيل: هو كل دهن عصر من حب؛ قال ابن بري: دهن السمسم هو الشيرج والحل؛ ويقوي أن السليط الزيت قول الجعدي: يضيء كمثل سراج السليط، ... لم يجعل الله فيه نحاسا

And it was said: it is any oil pressed from seeds; Ibn Barrī said: sesame oil is al-shīraj and al-ḥall; and the saying of al-Jaʿdī strengthens that al-salīṭ is oil: It shines like an oil lamp, ... God did not make smoke in it.

والسلطان: الحجة والبرهان، ولا يجمع لأن مجراه مجرى المصدر، قال محمد بن يزيد: هو من السليط.

And al-sulṭān: proof and evidence, and it is not pluralized because its usage is like a verbal noun, Muḥammad ibn Yazīd said: it is from al-salīṭ.

وقال الزجاج في قوله تعالى: ولقد أرسلنا موسى بآياتنا وسلطان مبين* ، أي وحجة بينة.

And al-Zajjāj said regarding the Almighty's saying: 'And We had certainly sent Moses with Our signs and a clear authority'*, meaning a clear proof.

والسلطان إنما سمي سلطانا لأنه حجة الله في أرضه، قال: واشتاق السلطان من السليط، قال: والسليط ما يضاء به، ومن هذا قيل للزيت: سليط، قال: وقوله جل وعز: فانفذوا لا تنفذون إلا بسلطان ، أي حيثما كنتم شاهدتم حجة لله تعالى وسلطانا يدل على أنه واحد.

And al-sulṭān is only named sulṭān because it is God's proof on His earth, he said: 'And al-sulṭān is derived from al-salīṭ', he said: 'And al-salīṭ is that by which light is given', and from this oil is called salīṭ, he said: 'And His saying, the Mighty and Majestic: 'Then you cannot go forth except by authority'*, meaning wherever you are, you witness a proof from God Almighty and an authority that indicates He is One.

وكل سلطان في القرآن حجة.

And every sulṭān in the Qur'an is proof.

وقوله تعالى: هلك عني سلطانيه ، معناه ذهب عني حجته.

And His saying, the Almighty: 'My authority has perished from me'*, means my proof has gone from me.

والسلطان: الحجة ولذلك قيل للأمراء سلاطين لأنهم الذين تقام بهم الحجة والحقوق.

And al-sulṭān: proof, and for this reason rulers are called sulāṭīn because they are those by whom proof and rights are established.

وما كان له عليهم من سلطان ، أي ما كان له عليهم من حجة يضلهم بها إلا أنا سلطناه عليهم لنعلم من يؤمن بالآخرة.

And he had no authority over them*, meaning he had no proof against them to lead them astray, except that We empowered him over them so that We might know who believes in the Hereafter.

والسلطان: الوالي، وهو فعلان، يذكر ويؤنث، والجمع السلاطين.

And al-sulṭān: the ruler, and it is on the pattern 'fūʿlān', it is masculine and feminine, and the plural is al-salāṭīn.

والسلطان والسلطان: قدرة الملك، يذكر ويؤنث.

And al-sulṭān and al-sulṭān: the power of the king, it is masculine and feminine.

والنون في السلطان زائدة لأن أصل بنائه السليط.

And the 'nūn' in al-sulṭān is extra because the origin of its structure is al-salīṭ.

والتسليط: إطلاق السلطان وقد سلطه الله عليه.

And al-taslīṭ: the bestowing of authority, and God has empowered him over it.

وفي التنزيل العزيز: ولو شاء الله لسلطهم عليكم .

And in the Noble Revelation: 'And if God had willed, He would have empowered them over you'.

وسلطان كل شيء: شدته وحدته وسطوته، قيل من اللسان السليط الحديد.

And the sulṭān of everything: its intensity, sharpness, and might, it is said to be from the sharp iron tongue.

السلاطة بمعنى الحدة، قد جاء؛ قال الشاعر يصف نصلا محددة: سلاط حداد أرهفتها المواقع

Al-salāṭah meaning sharpness, it has come; the poet said, describing a sharpened blade: Sharpness of hardness, the impacts have refined it.

وإذا كان الدابة وقاح الحافر، والبعير وقاح الخف، قيل: إنه لسلط الحافر، وقد سلط يسلط سلاطة كما يقال لسان سليط وسلط، وبعير سلط الخف كما يقال دابة سلطة الحافر، والفعل من كل ذلك سلط سلاطة؛ قال أمية بن أبي الصلت: إن الأنام رعايا الله كلهم، ... هو السليطط فوق الأرض مستطر

And if the animal has a hard hoof, and the camel has a resistant foot, it is said: it is salṭ al-ḥāfir, and it has become salṭ (strong) it becomes salāṭah, just as a sharp tongue is called salīṭ and sulṭ, and a camel with a resistant foot is called baʿīr salṭ al-khuff, and an animal with a resistant hoof is called dābbah salṭat al-ḥāfir, and the verb from all of that is salṭa, salāṭah; Umayyah ibn Abī al-Ṣalt said: Indeed, all mankind are subjects of God, ... He is the empowered (al-salīṭaṭ) upon the earth, spread out.

And al-sulṭah: the long arrow, and the plural is salāṭ; al-Mutanakhkhil al-Hudhalī said: Like the return of the dung (of a beast), subtle, and not ... sharp of blade, nor long arrows.

والمساليط: أسنان المفاتيح، الواحدة مسلاط.

And al-masālīṭ: the teeth of keys, the singular is mislāṭ.

وسنابك سلطات أي حداد؛ قال الأعشى: هو الواهب المائة المصطفاة، ... وكل كميت، كجذع الطريق، ... يجري على سلطات لثم المجتزم: الخارص، ورواه أبو عمرو المجترم، بالراء، أي الصارم.

And hooves that are salṭāt, meaning sharp; al-Aʿshā said: He is the giver of the hundred chosen ones, ... And every dark bay horse, like the trunk of the road, ... runs on sharp hooves. Al-mujtazim: the estimator of dates, and Abū ʿAmr narrated it as al-mujtarm, with a raʾ, meaning the one who cuts.
