What do you hope for from Al-Arīṭ? ... He is not one of resolve, nor is he generous.

ويقال: هو سفيط النفس أي سخيها طيبها، لغة أهل الحجاز.

And it is said: He is 'safīṭ al-nafs', meaning generous, good-natured, and cheerful, a dialect of the people of Hijaz.

ويقال: ما أسفط نفسه أي ما أطيبها.

And it is said: 'Mā asfaṭa nafsahu' means 'How good-natured he is!'

إنه لسفيط النفس وسخي النفس ومذل النفس إذا كان هشا إلى المعروف جوادا.

He is indeed 'safīṭ al-nafs', 'sakhiyy al-nafs' (generous of spirit), and 'muthill al-nafs' (humble of spirit) if he is cheerful towards good deeds and bountiful.

وكل رجل أو شيء لا قدر له، فهو سفيط؛ عن ابن الأعرابي.

And every man or thing that has no value is 'safīṭ'; according to Ibn Al-A'rabi.
