And the line: the path, it is said: adhere to that path and do not deviate from it at all.

And 'takhṭīṭ': ruling, Al-Tahdhib: 'takhṭīṭ' is like 'tasṭīr', you say: you drew his sins upon him, meaning you listed them.

وفي حديث معاوية بن الحكم: أنه سأل النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، عن الخط فقال: كان نبي من الأنبياء يخط فمن وافق خطه علم مثل علمه

And in the Hadith of Mu'awiyah bin Al-Hakam: that he asked the Prophet, peace be upon him, about 'al-khaṭṭ' and he said: There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines, and whoever's line matched his knowledge, he gained knowledge like his.

قال ابن عباس هو الخط الذي يخطه الحازي، وهو علم قديم تركه الناس

Ibn Abbas said: It is the 'khaṭṭ' that the diviner draws, and it is an ancient science that people have abandoned.

فإن بقي من الخطوط خطان فهما علامة قضاء الحاجة والنجح

If two lines remain from the markings, they are a sign of the fulfillment of the need and success.

قال: وكانت العرب تسمي ذلك الخط الذي يبقى من خطوط الحازي الأسحم، وكان هذا الخط عندهم مشؤوما

He said: And the Arabs used to call that line which remained from the diviner's markings 'al-asḥam', and this line was considered ominous among them.

والماشي يخط برجله الأرض على التشبيه بذلك

And the walker marks the ground with his foot by analogy to that.

وتكتبان في الطريق لام ألف

And they write 'lam alif' on the road.

والخطوط، بفتح الخاء، من بقر الوحش: التي تخط الأرض بأظلافها، وكذلك كل دابة

And 'al-khuṭūṭ', with fatha on the kha: from wild cattle: those that mark the ground with their hooves, and likewise every beast.

ويقال: فلان يخط في الأرض إذا كان يفكر في أمره ويدبره

And it is said: So-and-so marks in the ground when he is thinking about his affair and planning it.

والخط: خط الزاجر، وهو أن يخط بإصبعه في الرمل ويزجر

And the line: the line of the omen-reader, which is to draw with his finger in the sand and then divine.

وثوب مخطط وكساء مخطط: فيه خطوط، وكذلك تمر مخطط ووحش مخطط

And a striped garment and a striped cloak: having lines on them, and likewise striped dates and striped game.

وخط وجهه واختط: صارت فيه خطوط

And his face was lined and 'ikhtaṭṭa': lines appeared on it.

واختط الغلام أي نبت عذاره

And the boy 'ikhtaṭṭa', meaning his sideburns grew.

And 'al-khaṭṭ' and 'al-khuṭṭah': land that is settled without anyone having settled it before.

وقد خطها لنفسه خطا واختطها: وهو أن يعلم عليها علامة بالخط ليعلم أنه قد احتازها ليبنيها دارا، ومنه خطط الكوفة والبصرة

And he marked it for himself with a line and 'ikhtaṭṭahā': which is to mark it with a sign by line to know that he has claimed it to build a house, and from this are the settlements of Kufa and Basra.

واختط فلان خطة إذا تحجر موضعا وخط عليه بجدار، وجمعها الخطط

And so-and-so 'ikhtaṭṭa' a 'khuṭṭah' when he enclosed a place and built a wall around it, and its plural is 'al-khuṭaṭ'.

وسئل إبراهيم الحربي عن حديث النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم: أنه ورث النساء خططهن دون الرجال، فقال: نعم كان النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أعطى نساء خططا يسكنها في المدينة شبه القطائع، منهن أم عبد، فجعلها لهن دون الرجال لا حظ فيها للرجال

And Ibrahim Al-Harbi was asked about the Hadith of the Prophet, peace be upon him: that he inherited for the women their plots of land ('khuṭaṭ') instead of the men, so he said: Yes, the Prophet, peace be upon him, had given women plots ('khuṭaṭ') to inhabit in Medina, similar to fiefs, among them Umm Abd, so he made them for them, with no share for men.

والأرض الخطيطة التي يمطر ما حولها ولا تمطر هي، وقيل: الخطيطة الأرض التي لم تمطر بين أرضين ممطورتين، وقيل: هي التي مطر بعضها

And the 'khuṭayṭah' land is that which is surrounded by rain but does not receive it, and it is said: 'al-khuṭayṭah' is the land that did not rain between two rained-upon lands, and it is said: it is that which some of it rained.

فقال ابن عباس: خط الله نوءها ألا طلقت نفسها ثلاثا

So Ibn Abbas said: May God decree its rain ('khaṭṭa Allāh naw'ahā') that she divorced herself three times.

قال أبو عبيد: من رواه خط الله نوءها جعله من الخطيطة، وهي الأرض التي لم تمطر بين أرضين ممطورتين، وجمعها خطائط

Abu Ubaid said: Whoever narrates it as 'khaṭṭa Allāh naw'ahā' makes it from 'al-khuṭayṭah', which is the land that did not rain between two rained-upon lands, and its plural is 'khāṭā'iṭ'.

ترعى الخطائط ونرد المطائط

They graze in the unwatered tracts and we approach the watered tracts.

على قلاص تختطي الخطائطا، ... يتبعن موار الملاط مائطا

On she-camels that traverse the unwatered tracts, following the watering places of the fertile land.

فإن أصل الخطيطة الأرض التي لم تمطر، فاستعارها للذل لأن الخطيطة من الأرضين ذليلة بما بخسته من حقها

For the origin of 'al-khuṭayṭah' is land that did not receive rain, so it was metaphorically used for humiliation because 'al-khuṭayṭah' land is humiliated by being deprived of its right.

وأرض خط لم تمطر وقد مطر ما حولها

And 'arḍun khaṭṭun' is land that did not rain while what was around it rained.

والخطة، بالضم: شبه القصة والأمر

And 'al-khuṭṭah', with damma: is like a story and an affair.

هما خطتا: إما إسار ومنة، ... وإما دم، والقتل بالحر أجدر

They are two situations ('khuṭṭatā'): either captivity and favor, or blood, and death is more fitting for a free man.

وفي حديث الحديبية: إنه قد عرض عليكم خطة رشد فاقبلوها أي أمرا واضحا في الهدى والاستقامة

And in the Hadith of Al-Hudaybiyyah: 'Indeed, a plan of righteousness has been presented to you, so accept it', meaning a clear matter of guidance and uprightness.

وفي رأسه خطة أي أمر ما، وقيل: في رأسه خطة أي جهل وإقدام على الأمور

And in his head is a 'khuṭṭah', meaning some matter, and it is said: in his head is a 'khuṭṭah', meaning ignorance and recklessness in matters.

أيلام ابن هذه أن يفصل الخطة وينتصر من وراء الحجزة ؟

Is the son of this one blamed for resolving a difficult situation and seeking victory from behind the protective barrier?

جاء فلان وفي رأسه خطة إذا جاء وفي نفسه حاجة وقد عزم عليها، والعامة تقول: في رأسه خطية، وكلام العرب هو الأول

So-and-so came with a 'khuṭṭah' in his head, meaning he came with a need in his heart and had decided on it, and the common people say: 'in his head is a 'khuṭṭiyah'', and the speech of the Arabs is the former.

وخط وجه فلان واختط

And so-and-so's face was lined and 'ikhtaṭṭa'.

والأخط الدقيق المحاسن

And 'al-akhuṭṭ': fine features.

وخططت بالسيف وسطه، ويقال: خطه بالسيف نصفين

And I cut his middle with the sword, and it is said: I split him in half with the sword.

وقبح الله عنزا خيرها خطة

And may God curse a goat whose best quality is 'khuṭṭah'.

والخط أرض ينسب إليها الرماح الخطية، فإذا جعلت النسبة اسما لازما قلت خطية، ولم تذكر الرماح، وهو خط عمان

And Al-Khatt is a land to which the 'Khattī' spears are attributed, so if you make the attribution a fixed noun, you say 'khaṭṭīyah', and you do not mention the spears, and it is the Khatt of Oman.

والخط سيف البحرين وعمان، وقيل: بل كل سيف خط، وقيل: الخط مرفأ السفن بالبحرين تنسب إليه الرماح

And Al-Khatt is a sword of the two Bahrains and Oman, and it is said: rather, every sword is 'khaṭṭ', and it is said: Al-Khatt is a port for ships in the two Bahrains to which spears are attributed.

فإذا جاءت من أرض الهند، وليس الخطي الذي هو الرماح من نبات أرض العرب، وقد كثر مجيئه في أشعارها

When they come from the land of India, and the 'khaṭṭī' which is the spear is not from the plants of the land of the Arabs, and its presence has become frequent in their poetry.

فأخذ خطيا؛ الخطي، بالفتح: الرمح المنسوب إلى الخط

So he took a 'khaṭṭī'; 'al-khaṭṭī', with fatha: the spear attributed to Al-Khatt.

الخط موضع باليمامة، وهو خط هجر تنسب إليه الرماح الخطية لأنها تحمل من بلاد الهند فتقوم به

Al-Khatt is a place in Al-Yamamah, and it is the Khatt of Hajar to which the 'Khattīyah' spears are attributed because they are brought from the lands of India and presented there.

إنه نام حتى سمع غطيطه أو خطيطه ؛ الخطيط: قريب من الغطيط وهو صوت النائم

He slept until his snoring or 'khaṭīṭ' was heard; 'al-khaṭīṭ': is close to 'ghaṭṭīṭ' which is the sound of a sleeping person.

And Hillas Al-Khataat: the name of a man who practices divination.

ومخطط: موضع؛ عن ابن الأعرابي؛ وأنشد

And 'Mukhaṭṭaṭ': a place; from Ibn Al-Arabi; and he recited.

يقال أقم على هذا الأمر بخطة وبحجة معناهما واحد

It is said: Stand firm on this matter with a 'khuṭṭah' and with a 'ḥujjah', their meanings are the same.

وقولهم: خطة نائية أي مقصد بعيد

And their saying: 'khuṭṭah nā'iyah' means a distant destination.

وقولهم: خذ خطة أي خذ خطة الانتصاف، ومعناه انتصف

And their saying: 'take a 'khuṭṭah'' means take the plan of seeking justice, and its meaning is to seek justice.

والخطة أيضا من الخط: كالنقطة من النقط اسم ذلك

And 'al-khuṭṭah' is also from 'al-khaṭṭ': like a dot from 'nuqṭah', it is the name of that.

وقولهم: ما خط غباره أي ما شقه

And their saying: 'he did not 'khaṭṭa' his dust', meaning he did not cleave it.
