القبض: خلاف البسط
Grasping: the opposite of expansion.
قبضه يقبضه قبضا وقبضه؛ الأخيرة عن ابن الأعرابي
He grasped it, he grasps it, a grasping and a grasping; the latter is from Ibn al-A'rabi.
تركت ابن ذي الجدين فيه مرشة، ... يقبض أحشاء الجبان شهيقها
I left the son of the two possessors of strength in it, a sprinkling, ... its panting grasping the entrails of the coward.
والانقباض: خلاف الانبساط، وقد انقبض وتقبض.
And contraction: the opposite of expansion, and he contracted and became contracted.
وانقبض الشيء: صار مقبوضا.
And the thing became contracted: it became grasped.
وتقبضت الجلدة في النار أي انزوت.
And the skin contracted in the fire, meaning it shrank.
هو الذي يمسك الرزق وغيره من الأشياء عن العباد بلطفه وحكمته ويقبض الأرواح عند الممات.
He is the one who withholds sustenance and other things from His servants with His kindness and wisdom, and grasps the souls at death.
يقبض الله الأرض ويقبض السماء أي يجمعهما.
Allah grasps the earth and grasps the sky, meaning He gathers them.
وقبض المريض إذا توفي وإذا أشرف على الموت.
And the patient dies when he passes away and when he is on the verge of death.
فأرسلت إليه أن ابنا لي قبض ؛ أرادت أنه في حال القبض ومعالجة النزع.
So I sent to him saying, 'A son of mine has died'; she meant he was in the state of dying and the throes of death.
إنه ليقبضني ما قبضك؛ قال الأزهري: معناه أنه يحشمني ما أحشمك، ونقيضه من الكلام: إنه ليبسطني ما بسطك.
He makes me feel what makes you feel; Al-Azhari said: its meaning is that he embarrasses me as he embarrasses you, and its opposite in speech is: he makes me feel expansive as he makes you feel expansive.
الخير يبسطه والشر يقبضه.
Goodness expands it, and evil contracts it.
فاطمة بضعة مني يقبضني ما قبضها أي أكره ما تكرهه وأنجمع مما تنجمع منه.
Fatima is a piece of me; what distresses her distresses me, meaning I dislike what she dislikes and shrink from what she shrinks from.
والتقبض: التشنج.
And contracting: spasms.
والقبض: مصدر قبضت قبضا، يقال: قبضت مالي قبضا.
And grasping: the مصدر of I grasped, a grasping; it is said: I took possession of my money, a taking.
وأصله في جناح الطائر؛ قال الله تعالى: ويقبضن ما يمسكهن إلا الرحمن .
And its origin is in the wing of a bird; Allah the Almighty said: 'And they [the birds] keep them [in the air] not except Allah holds them.'
قبض الطائر جناحه: جمعه.
The bird grasped its wing: it gathered it.
ويقبضون أيديهم ؛ أي عن النفقة، وقيل: لا يؤتون الزكاة.
And they withhold their hands; meaning from spending, and it was said: they do not give zakat.
والله يقبض ويبسط أي يضيق على قوم ويوسع على قوم.
And Allah grasps and expands, meaning He constricts some people and expands for others.
وقبض ما بين عينيه فتقبض: زواه.
And he contracted what was between his eyes, so it contracted: he narrowed it.
وقبضت الشيء تقبيضا: جمعته وزويته.
And I gathered the thing, a gathering: I collected it and drew it together.
يوم يقبض ما بين العينين: يكنى بذلك عن شدة خوف أو حرب، وكذلك يوم يقبض الحشى.
A day that contracts what is between the eyes: this is a metaphor for intense fear or war, and likewise a day that contracts the intestines.
ما قبضت عليه من شيء، يقال: أعطاه قبضة من سويق أو تمر أو كفا «1» منه
What you grasped of something; it is said: he gave him a handful of dried yogurt or dates, or a fistful of it.
القبض جمع الكف على الشيء.
Grasping is the clenching of the fist on a thing.
قبضت الشيء قبضا: أخذته.
I grasped the thing, a grasping: I took it.
القبضة: ما أخذت بجمع كفك كله، فإذا كان بأصابعك فهي القبصة، بالصاد.
The fistful: what you took with your entire fist; if it is with your fingers, then it is al-qabṣah, with a ṣād.
القبض قبولك المتاع وإن لم تحوله.
Grasping is your acceptance of the goods even if you do not move them.
القبض: تحويلك المتاع إلى حيزك.
Grasping: your moving the goods into your space.
القبض: التناول للشيء بيدك ملامسة.
Grasping: taking hold of a thing with your hand, touching it.
قبض على الشيء وبه يقبض قبضا: انحنى عليه بجميع كفه.
He grasped the thing and by it he grasps, a grasping: he bent over it with his whole palm.
فتقبضت قبضة من أثر الرسول ؛ قال ابن جني: أراد من تراب أثر حافر فرس الرسول
So I took a handful from the trace of the Messenger; Ibn Jinni said: he meant from the dust of the hoof print of the Messenger's horse.
وصار الشيء في قبضي وقبضتي أي في ملكي.
And the thing became in my grasp and my possession, meaning in my ownership.
وهذا قبضة كفي أي قدر ما تقبض عليه.
And this is the grasp of my hand, meaning the amount you can grasp.
والأرض جميعا قبضته يوم القيامة ؛ قال ثعلب: هذا كما تقول هذه الدار في قبضتي ويدي أي في ملكي
And the earth, all of it, is His grasp on the Day of Resurrection; Tha'lab said: this is like your saying, 'This house is in my grasp and my hand,' meaning in my ownership.
فأخذ قبضة من التراب ؛ هو بمعنى المقبوض كالغرفة بمعنى المغروف، وهي بالضم الاسم، وبالفتح المرة.
So he took a handful of dust; it is in the sense of 'grasped' like a scoopful in the sense of 'scooped', and it is with damma the noun, and with fatha the instance.
مقبض السكين والقوس والسيف ومقبضتها: ما قبضت عليه منها بجمع الكف.
The handle of the knife, bow, and sword, and its handle: what you grasp it with using the whole fist.
ويقولون مقبضة السكين ومقبض السيف، كل ذلك حيث يقبض عليه بجمع الكف.
And they say the handle of the knife and the handle of the sword, all of that is where it is grasped with the whole fist.
المقبضة موضع اليد من القناة.
The handle: the place of the hand on the shaft.
أقبض السيف والسكين: جعل لهما مقبضا.
He equipped the sword and knife: he made them have a handle.
رجل قبضة رفضة: للذي يتمسك بالشيء ثم لا يلبث أن يدعه ويرفضه
A man of 'qabḍah rafḍah': one who holds onto something then soon lets it go and abandons it.
وهو من الرعاء الذي يقبض إبله فيسوقها ويطردها حتى ينهيها حيث شاء، وراع قبضة إذا كان منقبضا لا يتفسح في رعي غنمه.
And he is among the shepherds who gathers his camels and drives them and herds them until he takes them where he wishes, and a shepherd is 'qabḍah' if he is contracted, not spreading out in grazing his sheep.
قبض الشيء قبضا: أخذه.
He grasped the thing, a grasping: he took it.
قبضه المال: أعطاه إياه.
He gave him the money: he gave it to him.
فجعل يجيء به قبضا قبضا.
So he began to bring it handful by handful.
هي القبض التي تعطى عند الحصاد ، وقد روي بالصاد المهملة.
It is the handful given at harvest, and it has been narrated with an unpointed ṣād.
ودخل مال فلان في القبض، بالتحريك، يعني ما قبض من أموال الناس.
And so-and-so's wealth entered the collection, with harakah, meaning what was collected from people's wealth.
القبض ما جمع من الغنائم فألقي في قبضه أي في مجتمعه.
The collection is what was gathered of spoils and thrown into its collection point, meaning its gathering place.
فأخذ قبضة من التراب ؛ هو بمعنى المقبوض كالغرفة بمعنى المغروف
So he took a handful of dust; it is in the sense of 'grasped' like a scoopful in the sense of 'scooped'.
كان سلمان على قبض من قبض المهاجرين.
Salman was among the collectors of the Muhajireen.
صار الشيء في قبضك وفي قبضتك أي في ملكك.
The thing became in your grasp and your possession, meaning in your ownership.
المقبض: المكان الذي يقبض فيه، نادر.
The place of grasping: the place where one grasps, rare.
وكل ما حذف خامسه، فهو مقبوض، وإنما سمي مقبوضا ليفصل بين ما حذف أوله وآخره ووسطه.
And everything whose fifth letter is deleted is called 'maqbūḍ', and it is named 'maqbūḍ' to distinguish it from what has its beginning, end, or middle deleted.
قبض الرجل: مات، فهو مقبوض.
The man died: he passed away, so he is deceased.
وتقبض على الأمر: توقف عليه.
And he paused on the matter: he stopped at it.
وتقبض عنه: اشمأز.
And he recoiled from it: he felt disgusted.
والقباضة: الحمار السريع الذي يقبض العانة أي يعجلها؛ وأنشد لرؤبة: ألف شتى ليس بالراعي الحمق، ... قباضة بين العنيف واللبق
And al-qabāḍah: the fast donkey that hastens its gait; and Ru'bah recited: A thousand scattered ones, not the foolish shepherd, ... a swift one between the rough and the skillful.
ما أدري أي القبيض هو كقولك ما أدري أي الطمش هو
I do not know which swift-mover it is, like your saying, 'I do not know which of the confused ones it is'.
ويقال للراعي الحسن التدبير الرفيق برعيته: إنه لقبضة رفضة، ومعناه أنه يقبضها فيسوقها إذا أجدب لها المرتع، فإذا وقعت في لمعة من الكلإ رفضها حتى تنتشر فترتع.
And the well-managing, gentle shepherd to his flock is called 'qabḍah rafḍah', meaning he gathers them and drives them when the pasture is scarce for them, and when they fall upon a patch of herbage he lets them spread out to graze.
والقبضى: العدو الشديد؛ وروى الأزهري عن المنذري عن أبي طالب أنه أنشده قول الشماخ: وتعدو القبضى قبل عير وما جرى، ... ولم تدر ما بالي ولم أدر ما لها
And al-qabḍā: intense running; Al-Azhari narrated from Al-Mundhiri from Abu Talib that he recited to him the saying of Ash-Shammakh: And the swift runner runs before the wild ass and whatever runs, ... and you did not know what was wrong with me, nor did I know what was wrong with them.
يقال قبص، بالصاد المهملة، يقبص إذا نزا، فهما لغتان؛ قال: وأحسب بيت الشماخ يروى: وتعدو القبصى، بالصاد المهملة.
It is said qabaṣa, with an unpointed ṣād, he leaps, so they are two languages; he said: And I think the verse of Ash-Shammakh is narrated: And the swift one runs, with an unpointed ṣād.
إذا القنبضات السود طوفن بالضحى، ... رقدن، عليهن الحجال المسجف
When the short black women moved about in the forenoon, ... they slept, with their draped canopies over them.
