Ribs that move like gazelles, ... moving a mile and stopping a mile.
والنسر قد يركض وهو هافي أي يضرب بجناحيه.
And the vulture may move rapidly while flapping, meaning it strikes with its wings.
إذا ركب الرجل البعير فضرب بعقبيه مركليه فهو الركض والركل.
If a man rides a camel and strikes its flanks with his heels, that is al-rakd and al-rakal.
وقد ركض الرجل إذا فر وعدا.
And a man has run if he flees and gallops.
قال الفراء في قوله تعالى: إذا هم منها يركضون لا تركضوا وارجعوا ؛ قال: يركضون يهربون وينهزمون ويفرون، وقال الزجاج: يهربون من العذاب.
Al-Farra said about the Almighty's saying: 'When they flee from it, do not flee and return'; he said: 'they flee, they run away, they are routed, and they escape', and Al-Zajjaj said: 'they flee from the punishment'.
ويقال ركض البعير برجله كما يقال رمح ذو الحافر برجله، وأصل الركض الضرب.
And it is said the camel struck with its leg as a hoofed animal is said to strike with its leg, and the origin of al-rakd is striking.
لنفس المؤمن أشد ارتكاضا على الذنب من العصفور حين يغدف به أي أشد اضطرابا وحركة على الخطيئة حذار العذاب من العصفور إذا أغدف عليه الشبكة فاضطرب تحتها.
The soul of the believer is more agitated by sin than a bird when it is trapped, meaning more disturbed and moving towards sin out of fear of punishment, like a bird when the net is cast upon it and it struggles beneath it.
كأن تحتي بازيا ركاضا
As if I had beneath me a swift falcon.
وروضا من السراء طحورا
And swiftness from the belly, piercing.
ومرتكض الماء: موضع مجمعه.
And the gathering place of water: its collection point.
إنما هو عرق عاند أو ركضة من الشيطان ؛ قال: الركضة الدفعة والحركة؛
It is merely a stubborn vein or a push from Satan; he said: al-rakda is a push and a movement;
يركضن عند الزنابى، وهي جاهدة، ... يكاد يخطفها طورا وتهتلك «1» قال: ركضها طيرانها؛
They move rapidly near the ant-hills, and she is struggling, ... almost snatching her at times and tearing her. He said: their rapid movement is their flight;
والتركضى والتركضاء: ضرب من المشي على شكل تلك المشية، وقيل: مشية التركضى مشية فيها ترقل وتبختر، إذا فتحت التاء والكاف قصرت، وإذا كسرتهما مددت.
And al-tarakuddi and al-tarakudda: a type of walking resembling that gait, and it is said: the walk of al-tarakuddi is a walk with prancing and swaggering; if you open the ta and kaf, it is short, and if you break them, it is long.
وانتقضت مرته وارتكضت جرته.
His wife became agitated and his stomach churned.
وربما قالوا ركض الطائر إذا حرك جناحيه في الطيران؛
And sometimes they say 'rakada the bird' when it moves its wings in flight;
أرقني طارق هم أرقا، ... وركض غربان غدون نعقا
A night visitor's worries kept me awake, ... and the movement of crows going out cawing.
وأركضت الفرس: تحرك ولدها في بطنها وعظم؛
And the mare's fetus moved in her belly and grew;
وفلان لا يركض المحجن؛ عن ابن الأعرابي، أي لا يمتعض من شيء ولا يدفع عن نفسه.
And so-and-so does not move the crook; from Ibn al-Arabi, meaning he is not angered by anything and does not defend himself.
