Ibn Durayd said: Al-ḥaḍḍ and al-ḥaḍḍ are two linguistic variants like aḍ-ḍaʿf and aḍ-ḍuʿf. He said: And the correct is what we started with, that al-ḥaḍḍ is the masdar and al-ḥaḍḍ is the noun.
الأزهري: الحض الحث على الخير.
Al-Azhari: Al-ḥaḍḍ is the encouragement towards good.
ويقال: حضضت القوم على القتال تحضيضا إذا حرضتهم.
And it is said: I urged the people to fight with intense urging if I incited them.
وفي الحديث ذكر الحض على الشيء جاء في غير موضع.
And in the Hadith, the mention of urging towards something appears in more than one place.
وحضضه أي حرضه.
And he urged him, meaning he incited him.
والمحاضة: أن يحث كل واحد منهما صاحبه.
And al-muḥāḍḍah: is for each of them to urge his companion.
والتحاض: التحاث، وقرئ: ولا تحاضون على طعام المسكين ؛
And at-taḥāḍḍ: is at-taḥāth, and it was recited: 'And you do not urge each other to feed the poor';
قال الفراء: وكل صواب، فمن قرأ تحاضون فمعناه تحافظون، ومن قرأ تحاضون فمعناه يحض بعضكم بعضا، ومن قرأ تحضون فمعناه تأمرون بإطعامه، وكذلك يحضون.
Al-Farra' said: And all are correct. So whoever recited 'tahaḍḍūn' means 'you preserve each other', and whoever recited 'tahaḍḍūn' means 'you urge each other', and whoever recited 'taḥiḍḍūn' means 'you command feeding him', and likewise 'yaḥiḍḍūn'.
يقال احتضضت نفسي لفلان وابتضضتها إذا استزدتها.
It is said: I sought more from myself for so-and-so, and I sought more from it, if I asked for more.
والحضض والحضض: دواء يتخذ من أبوال الإبل، وفيه لغات أخر، روى أبو عبيد عن اليزيدي: الحضض والحضظ والحظظ والحظظ، قال شمر: ولم أسمع الضاد مع الظاء إلا في هذا، قال: وهو الحدل.
And al-ḥaḍaḍ and al-ḥaḍaḍ: is a medicine taken from camel urine, and it has other linguistic variants. Abu Ubayd narrated from Al-Yazidi: Al-ḥaḍaḍ, al-ḥaẓaẓ, al-ḥaẓaẓ, and al-ḥaẓaẓ. Shammir said: I have not heard the ḍād with the ẓāʾ except in this, and he said: It is al-ḥadhal.
قال ابن خالويه الحظظ والحظظ بالظاء، وزاد الخليل: الحضظ بضاد بعدها ظاء، وقال أبو عمر الزاهد: الحضذ بالضاد والذال، وفي حديث طاووس: لا بأس بالحضض ، روى ابن الأثير فيه هذه الوجوه كلها ما خلا الضاد والذال، وقال: هو دواء يعقد من أبوال الإبل: وقيل: هو عقار منه مكي ومنه هندي، قال: وهو عصارة شجر معروف؛
Ibn Khilawayh said al-ḥaẓaẓ and al-ḥaẓaẓ with ẓāʾ, and Al-Khalil added: al-ḥaḍaẓ with a ḍād followed by a ẓāʾ, and Abu Amr Al-Zahid said: al-ḥaḍaḏ with ḍād and ḏāl. And in the Hadith of Tawus: 'There is no harm in al-ḥaḍaḍ'. Ibn Al-Athir narrated all these forms except with ḍād and ḏāl, and he said: It is a medicine coagulated from camel urine. And it was said: It is a substance, some of it Makkan and some of it Indian. He said: And it is the sap of a known tree;
وقال ابن دريد: الحضض والحضض صمغ من نحو الصنوبر والمر وما أشبههما له ثمرة كالفلفل وتسمى شجرته الحضض؛
And Ibn Durayd said: Al-ḥaḍaḍ and al-ḥaḍaḍ is a resin from pine, myrrh, and similar trees, which has a fruit like pepper, and its tree is called al-ḥaḍaḍ;
ومننه حديث سليم بن مطير: إذا أنا برجل قد جاء كأنه يطلب دواء أو حضضا.
And from it is the Hadith of Sulaym bin Mutayr: 'When I saw a man coming as if he were seeking medicine or resin.'
والحضض: كحل الخولان؛
And al-ḥaḍaḍ: is the kohl of the Khawlan;
قال ابن سيده: والحضض والحضض، بفتح الضاد الأولى وضمها، داء؛ وقيل: هو دواء، وقيل: هو عصارة الصبر.
Ibn Sidah said: And al-ḥaḍaḍ and al-ḥaḍaḍ, with fath on the first ḍād and damma, is a disease; and it was said: it is a medicine, and it was said: it is the sap of the aloe.
والحضيض: قرار الأرض عند سفح الجبل، وقيل: هو في أسفله، والسفح من وراء الحضيض، فالحضيض مما يلي السفح والسفح دون ذلك، والجمع أحضة وحضض.
And al-ḥaḍīḍ: is the firm ground at the foot of the mountain. And it was said: it is at its base. And the slope is beyond the base, so the base is what is next to the slope, and the slope is below that. The plural is aḥiḍḍah and ḥaḍaḍ.
وفي حديث عثمان: فتحرك الجبل حتى تساقطت حجارته بالحضيض.
And in the Hadith of Uthman: 'The mountain moved until its stones fell to the base.'
وقال الجوهري: الحضيض القرار من الأرض عند منقطع الجبل؛ وأنشد الأزهري لبعضهم: الشعر صعب وطويل سلمه، ... إذا ارتقى فيه الذي لا يعلمه، زلت به إلى الحضيض قدمه، ... يريد أن يعربه فيعجمه، والشعر لا يسطيعه من يظلمه
And Al-Jawhari said: Al-ḥaḍīḍ is the firm ground at the end of the mountain. And Al-Azhari recited for some of them: 'Poetry is difficult and its ladder is long... If he who does not know it climbs it, his foot slips to the base... he wants to make it eloquent but makes it barbarous, and poetry is beyond the one who oppresses it.'
وفي حديث يحيى بن يعمر: كتب عن يزيد بن المهلب إلى الحجاج: إنا لقينا العدو ففعلنا واضطررناهم إلى عرعرة الجبل ونحن بحضيضه.
And in the Hadith of Yahya bin Ya'mur: It was written from Yazid bin Al-Muhallab to Al-Hajjaj: 'We met the enemy and did what we did, and we forced them to the summit of the mountain, and we were at its base.'
وفي الحديث: أنه أهدى إلى رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، هدية فلم يجد شيئا يضعها عليه؛ فقال: ضعه بالحضيض فإنما أنا عبد آكل كما يأكل العبد ، يعني بالأرض.
And in the Hadith: 'He was gifted a gift to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and he found nothing to place it on; so he said: Place it on the ground, for I am but a servant who eats as a servant eats', meaning on the earth.
قال الأصمعي: الحضي، بضم الحاء، الحجر الذي تجده بحضيض الجبل وهو منسوب كالسهلي والدهري؛ وأنشد لحميد الأرقط يصف فرسا: وأبا يدق الحجر الحضيا
Al-Asma'i said: Al-ḥaḍiyy, with damma on the ḥāʾ, is the stone you find at the base of the mountain, and it is attributed like as-sahliyy and ad-dahriyy. And he recited for Humayd Al-Arqaṭ describing a horse: 'And the father of the one who crushes the stone of the mountain base.'
وأحمر حضي: شديد الحمرة.
And a deep red: intensely red.
والحضحض: نبت.
