Al-fayṣ is the clarity of speech.
فَجَعَلَ يَتَكَلَّمُ وَمَا يُفِيصُ بِهَا لِسَانُهُ أَيْ مَا يُبِينُ.
And he began to speak, and his tongue did not articulate it, meaning it did not make it clear.
وَفُلَانٌ ذُو إِفَاصَةٍ إِذَا تَكَلَّمَ أَيْ ذُو بَيَانٍ.
And so-and-so is possessed of 'ifāṣah' when he speaks, meaning possessed of clarity.
وَفَاصَ لِسَانُهُ بِالْكَلامِ يَفِيصُ وَأَفَاصَهُ أَبَانَهُ.
And his tongue articulated with speech, it articulates, and 'afāṣahu' means it made it clear.
وَالتَّفَاوُصُ: التَّكَالُمُ مِنْهُ انْقَلَبَتْ وَاوًا لِلضَّمَّةِ، وَهُوَ نَادِرٌ، وَقِيَاسُهُ الصِّحَّةُ.
And at-tafāwuṣ: speaking together from it, the 'wāw' was inverted due to the 'ḍammah', and this is rare, and its standard form is correct.
وَأَفَاصَ الضَّبُّ عَنْ يَدِهِ: انْفَرَجَتْ أَصَابِعُهُ عَنْهُ فَخَلَصَ.
And the lizard 'afāṣa' from his hand: its fingers parted from it, so it escaped.
فَأَفَاصَ مِنْ يَدِي حَتَّى خَلَصَ ذَنَبُهُ وَهُوَ حِينَ تَنْفَرِجُ أَصَابِعُكَ عَنْ مَقْبِضِ ذَنَبِهِ، وَهُوَ التَّفَاوُصُ.
So it 'afāṣa' from my hand until its tail was free, and that is when your fingers part from the grip of its tail, and that is at-tafāwuṣ.
فَقَبَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ فَلَمْ يَفُصْ وَلَمْ يَنْزِ وَلَمْ يَنْصُ بِمَعْنًى وَاحِدٍ.
So I grabbed it, and it did not 'faṣa', nor 'nazā', nor 'naṣṣa', all meaning one thing.
وَيُقَالُ وَاللَّهِ مَا فَصْتُ كَمَا يُقَالُ: وَاللَّهِ مَا بَرِحْتُ؛
And it is said: By God, I did not 'faṣtu', just as it is said: By God, I did not cease;
وَيُقَالُ فِي مَعْنَاهُ اسْتَفَاصَ؛
And in its meaning, it is said 'istafāṣa';
فَأَنَّى لِي الْيَوْمَ أَنْ أَسْتَفِيصَا؟
So how can I today 'astafīṣā'?
قَوْلُهُمْ مَا عَنْهُ مَحِيصٌ وَلَا مَفِيصٌ أَيْ مَا عَنْهُ مَحِيدٌ.
Their saying 'mā 'anhu maḥīṣun wa lā mafīṣun' means there is no escape from it.
وَمَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَنْ أُفِيصَ مِنْهُ أَيْ أُحِيدَ؛
And I could not 'ufīṣa' from it, meaning I could not evade;
وَلَوْنُهُ ... كَشَوْكِ السِّيَالِ، فَهُوَ عَذْبٌ يَفِيصُ
And its color... is like the thorns of the 'sayāl' tree, so it is sweet and 'yafīṣu'
وَقِيلَ يَفِيصُ يَبْرُقُ، وَقِيلَ يَتَكَلَّمُ، يُقَالُ: فَاصَ لِسَانُهُ بِالْكَلامِ وَأَفَاصَ الْكَلامَ أَبَانَهُ، فَيَكُونُ يَفِيصُ عَلَى هَذَا حَالًا أَيْ هُوَ عَذْبٌ فِي حَالِ كَلامِهِ.
And it was said: 'yafīṣu' means it shines, and it was said: it speaks. It is said: his tongue articulated with speech, and 'afāṣa' the speech means he made it clear, so 'yafīṣu' in this case is an adverbial state, meaning it is sweet in the state of his speech.
وَيُقَالُ: مَا فَصْتُ أَيْ مَا بَرِحْتُ، وَمَا فَصْتُ أَفْعَلُ أَيْ مَا بَرِحْتُ، وَمَا لَكَ عَنْ ذَلِكَ مَفِيصٌ أَيْ مَعْدِلٌ؛
And it is said: 'mā faṣtu' means I did not cease, and 'mā faṣtu af'alu' means I did not cease, and you have no 'mafīṣun' from that, meaning no alternative;
