ومن غمص النعمة
And from scorning a blessing.
لما قتل ابن آدم أخاه غمص الله الخلق، أراد نقصهم من الطول والعرض والقوة والبطش فصغرهم وحقرهم
When Cain killed his brother, God diminished mankind, meaning He reduced them in height, breadth, strength, and might, thus making them small and insignificant.
وغمص النعمة غمصا: تهاون بها وكفرها وازدرى بها
And to scorn a blessing: to be negligent of it, to deny it, and to disdain it.
واغتمصت فلانا اغتماصا: احتقرته
And I belittled so-and-so: I considered him insignificant.
غمص عليه قولا قاله: عابه عليه
He found fault with a saying he uttered: he criticized him for it.
إن رأيت منها أمرا أغمصه عليها أي أعيبها به وأطعن به عليها
If you see something wrong with her, I would find fault with her for it, meaning I would criticize her for it and attack her for it.
ورجل غمص على النسب: عياب
And a man who is critical of lineage: a fault-finder.
ورجل مغموص عليه في حسبه أو في دينه ومغموز أي مطعون عليه
And a man who is criticized regarding his lineage or his religion, and is 'maghmūz' meaning he is spoken against.
إلا مغموصا عليه بالنفاق أي مطعونا في دينه متهما بالنفاق
Except one who is criticized for hypocrisy, meaning one whose religion is attacked and who is suspected of hypocrisy.
والغمص في العين: كالرمص
And 'al-ghamaṣ' in the eye: is like 'al-ramṣ'.
كان الصبيان يصبحون غمصا رمصا ويصبح رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، صقيلا دهينا يعني في صغره
The children would wake up with eye discharge and crusts, while the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, would wake up clean and oiled, meaning in his youth.
وقيل: الغمص ما سال والرمص ما جمد، وقيل: هو شيء ترمي به العين مثل الزبد، والقطعة منه غمصة، وقد غمصت عينه، بالكسر، غمصا
And it was said: 'Al-ghamaṣ' is what flows, and 'al-ramṣ' is what solidifies. And it was said: it is something the eye casts out like foam. And a piece of it is 'ghamṣah'. And his eye had discharge, with a kasra, 'ghamṣan'.
الغمص الذي يكون مثل الزبد أبيض يكون في ناحية العين، والرمص الذي يكون في أصول الهدب
The 'ghamaṣ' is what is like white foam, found at the corner of the eye, and 'al-ramṣ' is what is at the roots of the eyelashes.
أنا متغمص من هذا الخبر ومتوصم وممدئل ومرنح ومغوث، وذلك إذا كان خبرا يسره ويخاف أن لا يكون حقا أو يخافه ويسره
I am anxious about this news, and apprehensive, and hopeful, and fearful, and relieved, and that is when it is news that pleases him, but he fears it might not be true, or he fears it and it pleases him.
الشعرى الغموص والغميصاء ويقال الرميصاء: من منازل القمر، وهي في الذراع أحد الكوكبين، وأختها الشعرى العبور، وهي التي خلف الجوزاء، وإنما سميت الغميصاء بهذا الاسم لصغرها وقلة ضوئها من غمص العين، لأن العين إذا رمصت صغرت
Al-Shi'ra al-Ghamūṣ and Al-Ghamīṣā', and it is also called Al-Ramīṣā': from the lunar mansions. It is in Al-Dhira', one of the two stars. And its sister is Al-Shi'ra al-'Ubūr, which is behind Gemini. And Al-Ghamīṣā' was named this because of its smallness and dim light, from the 'ghamaṣ' of the eye, because when the eye has 'ramṣ', it becomes small.
لأن العين إذا رمصت صغرت
Because when the eye has 'ramṣ', it becomes small.
فانحدر سهيل فصار يمانيا، وتبعته الشعرى اليمانية فعبرت البحر فسميت عبورا، وأقامت الغميصاء مكانها فبكت لفقدهما حتى غمصت عينها، وهي تصغير الغمصاء، وبه سميت أم سليم الغمصاء
So Suhayl descended and became Yemeni, and Al-Shi'ra al-Yamaniyah followed it, crossed the sea, and was named 'Ubūrah. And Al-Ghamīṣā' remained in its place and wept for their separation until her eye had discharge, and it is the diminutive of Al-Ghamṣā'. And by this, Umm Sulaym was named Al-Ghamīṣā'.
والغميصاء لا تراه فقد بكت حتى غمصت
And Al-Ghamīṣā' does not see it, so she wept until her eye had discharge.
إن الشعرى العبور قطعت المجرة فسميت عبورا، وبكت الأخرى على إثرها حتى غمصت فسميت الغميصاء
Indeed, Al-Shi'ra al-'Ubūr crossed the galaxy and was named 'Ubūrah. And the other wept in its wake until her eye had discharge and was named Al-Ghamīṣā'.

It is the Syrian star and the larger of the two stars of the clenched arm.

And how many a young man you see on the day of Al-Ghamīṣā' ... was struck, and was not wounded, though he was a striker.
وأصبح عني بالغميصاء جالسا ... فريقان: مسؤول، وآخر يسأل
And by Al-Ghamīṣā' two groups sat before me: one asked, and another being asked.
