التواء القرن على الأذنين إلى المؤخر وانعطافه
The twisting of the horn over the ears towards the back and its bending.
وتيس أعقص، والأنثى عقصاء
And a ram with twisted horns, and the female is 'aqṣā'.
والعقصاء من المعزى: التي التوى قرناها على أذنيها من خلفها
And al-'aqṣā' from the goats: she whose horns twisted over her ears from behind her.
والمعقاص: الشاة المعوجة القرن.
And al-mi'qāṣ: the sheep with a crooked horn.
فتطؤه بأظلافها ليس فيها عقصاء ولا جلحاء
And it tramples it with its hooves, and there is no 'aqṣā' (twisted-horned) or jalḥā' (hornless) among them.
والعقص في زحاف الوافر: إسكان الخامس من [مفاعلتن] فيصير [مفاعلين] بنقله ثم تحذف النون منه مع الخرم فيصير الجزء مفعول
And al-'aqs in the meter al-Wāfir: is the silencing of the fifth syllable of [mafā'alatun], making it [mafā'ilun] by its transfer, then the 'n' is deleted from it with al-khasr, making the foot maf'ūlun.
والعقص: دخول الثنايا في الفم والتواؤها، والفعل كالفعل.
And al-'aqs: the incisors entering the mouth and twisting, and the verb is like the verb.
والعقص من الرمل: كالعقد.
And al-'aqs of sand: like a knot.
والعقصة من الرمل: مثل السلسلة
And al-'uqṣah of sand: like a chain.
والعقص: أن تلوي الخصلة من الشعر ثم تعقدها ثم ترسلها.
And al-'aqs: to twist a lock of hair, then tie it, then let it go.
إن انفرقت عقيصته فرق وإلا تركها.
If his coiled lock of hair came undone, he would part it, otherwise he would leave it.
قال ابن الأثير: العقيصة الشعر المعقوص وهو نحو من المضفور
Ibn al-Athīr said: al-'uqayṣah is twisted hair, which is similar to braided hair.
والمرأة ربما اتخذت عقيصة من شعر غيرها.
And a woman might make an 'uqayṣah from someone else's hair.
والعقيصة: الخصلة، والجمع عقائص وعقاص، وهي العقصة، ولا يقال للرجل عقصة.
And al-'uqayṣah: the lock, and the plural is 'aqā'iṣ and 'iqqāṣ, and it is al-'uqṣah, and it is not said of a man as 'uqṣah.
والعقيصة: الضفيرة.
And al-'uqayṣah: the braid.
وعقص الشعر: ضفره وليه على الرأس.
And 'aqs of hair: braiding it and coiling it on the head.
وذو العقيصتين: رجل معروف خصل شعره عقيصتين وأرخاهما من جانبيه.
And Dhū al-'Uqayṣatayn: a known man whose hair was in two 'uqayṣatayn and he let them hang from his sides.
تضل العقاص في مثنى ومرسل
The 'iqqāṣ get lost in the dual and the loose strands.
من لبد أو عقص فعليه الحلق
Whoever covers himself with mud or coils his hair, must shave his head.
وإنما جعل عليه الحلق لأن هذه الأشياء تقي الشعر من الشعث، فلما أراد حفظ شعره وصونه ألزمه حلقه بالكلية، مبالغة في عقوبته.
And he was commanded to shave because these things protect the hair from being disheveled; so when he wanted to preserve and protect his hair, he was obligated to shave it completely, as an exaggeration of his punishment.
ولهذا تقول النساء: لها عقصة، وجمعها عقص وعقاص وعقائص، ويقال: هي التي تتخذ من شعرها مثل الرمانة.
And for this reason women say: she has an 'uqṣah, and its plural is 'aqs, 'iqqāṣ, and 'aqā'iṣ, and it is said: it is what she makes from her hair like a pomegranate.
الذي يصلي ورأسه معقوص كالذي يصلي وهو مكتوف
The one who prays with his head twisted (coiled) is like the one who prays while his hands are tied.
فأخرجت الكتاب من عقاصها أي ضفائرها.
She took the letter out of its braids (or coils).
والعقوص: خيوط تفتل من صوف وتصبغ بالسواد وتصل به المرأة شعرها؛ يمانية.
And al-'uqūṣ: threads spun from wool, dyed black, and used by women to attach their hair; Yemenite.
وعقصت شعرها تعقصه عقصا: شدته في قفاها.
And she twisted her hair, twisting it 'aqs-an: she tied it at the nape of her neck.
الخلع تطليقة بائنة وهو ما دون عقاص الرأس
Al-khul' is a revocable divorce, and it is what is below the hair ties of the head.
المعقص السهم ينكسر نصله فيبقى سنخه في السهم، فيخرج ويضرب حتى يطول ويرد إلى موضعه فلا يسد مسده لأنه دقق وطول
Al-mi'qaṣ: an arrow whose tip breaks off and its base remains in the shaft, so it is pulled out and struck until it lengthens and is returned to its place, but it does not fit properly because it has been thinned and lengthened.
ولو كنتم نبلا لكنتم معاقصا
And if you were arrows, you would be 'maqāṣa'.
وعقص أمره إذا لواه فلبسه.
And his affair became twisted when he twisted it and became entangled in it.
ليس مثل الحصر العقص يعني ابن الزبير؛ العقص: الألوى الصعب الأخلاق تشبيها بالقرن الملتوي.
He is not like the restrained one, the 'aqs, meaning Ibn al-Zubayr; al-'aqs: the twisted, difficult-natured one, by analogy with the twisted horn.
والعقص والعقيص والأعقص والعيقص، كله: البخيل الكز الضيق، وقد عقص، بالكسر، عقصا.
And al-'aqs, al-'uqayṣ, al-a'qaṣ, and al-'uwayqiṣ, all mean: the stingy, miserly, tight person, and he has become 'aqṣa, with kasra, 'aqṣan.
والعقاص: الدوارة التي في بطن الشاة، قال: وهي العقاص والمربض والمربض والحوية والحاوية للدوارة التي في بطن الشاة.
And al-'iqqāṣ: the coil that is in the belly of the sheep, he said: and it is al-'iqqāṣ, al-mirbaḍ, al-mirbaḍ, al-ḥawiyah, and al-ḥāwiyah for the coil that is in the belly of the sheep.
المعقاص من الجواري السيئة الخلق
Al-mi'qāṣ from the female slaves is one of bad character.
أخذته معاقصة ومقاعصة أي معازة.
He took it with mu'āqaṣah and muqā'aṣah, meaning contention.
