And it is said: So-and-so is singled out with so-and-so, meaning he is particular to him and he has a special characteristic with him.
إن امرأ خصني عمدا مودته، ... على التنائي، لعندي غير مكفور
Indeed, a man deliberately singled me out with his affection, ... despite the distance, my affection for him is not unacknowledged.
والاسم الخصوصية والخصوصية والخصية والخاصة والخصيصى، وهي تمد وتقصر؛ عن كراع، ولا نظير لها إلا المكيثى.
And the noun is al-khuṣūṣiyyah, al-khuṣūṣiyyah, al-khuṣyah, al-khāṣṣah, and al-khuṣayṣā, and it is lengthened and shortened; according to Kra'ah, and it has no parallel except al-makaythā.
والخاصة: خلاف العامة.
And al-khāṣṣah: is the opposite of al-'āmmah (the general).
والخاصة: من تخصه لنفسك.
And al-khāṣṣah: is what you single out for yourself.
وفي الحديث: بادروا بالأعمال ستا الدجال وكذا وكذا وخويصة أحدكم، يعني حادثة الموت التي تخص كل إنسان
And in the Hadith: Hasten to do good deeds before six things: the Antichrist, and so-and-so, and the small private matter of one of you, meaning the event of death which singles out every person.
والخصان والخصان: كالخاصة؛ ومنه قولهم: إنما يفعل هذا خصان الناس أي خواص منهم؛ وأنشد ابن بري لأبي قلابة الهذلي:
And al-khissān and al-khuṣṣān: are like al-khāṣṣah; and from this is their saying: These people only do this, meaning the distinguished among them; and Ibn Barrī recited for Abū Qalābah al-Hudhali:
والإخصاص: الإزراء.
And al-ikṣāṣ: is belittling.
والخصاص: شبه كوة في قبة أو نحوها إذا كان واسعا قدر الوجه
And al-khaṣāṣ: is like a window in a tent or the like if it is wide enough to fit a face.
وخصاص المنخل والباب والبرقع وغيره: خلله، واحدته خصاصة؛ وكذلك كل خلل وخرق يكون في السحاب، ويجمع خصاصات؛ ومنه قول الشاعر:
And the gaps of the sieve, door, veil, and others: are their openings, the singular of which is khaṣāṣah; and likewise every gap and hole that occurs in the clouds, and it is pluralized as khaṣāṣāt; and from this is the saying of the poet:
والخصاص: الفرج بين الأثافي والأصابع؛ وأنشد ابن بري للأشعري الجعفي:
And al-khaṣāṣ: is the space between the tripods and the fingers; and Ibn Barrī recited for al-Ash'arī al-Ju'fī:
والخصاصة والخصاصاء والخصاص: الفقر وسوء الحال والخلة والحاجة؛ وأنشد ابن بري للكميت:
And al-khaṣāṣah, al-khaṣāṣā', and al-khaṣāṣ: are poverty, bad condition, need, and necessity; and Ibn Barrī recited for al-Kumait:
وفي حديث فضالة: كان يخر رجال من قامتهم في الصلاة من الخصاصة أي الجوع، وأصلها الفقر والحاجة إلى الشيء.
And in the Hadith of Fuḍālah: Men would fall from their standing in prayer due to hunger, meaning hunger, and its origin is poverty and the need for something.
وفي التنزيل العزيز: ويؤثرون على أنفسهم ولو كان بهم خصاصة ؛ وأصل ذلك في الفرجة أو الخلة لأن الشيء إذا انفرج وهى واختل.
And in the Noble Qur'an: And they prefer others over themselves, even though they are in need; and the origin of that is in a gap or a space because something becomes loose and deficient when it opens up.
وصدرت الإبل وبها خصاصة إذا لم ترو، وصدرت بعطشها، وكذلك الرجل إذا لم يشبع من الطعام، وكل ذلك من معنى الخصاصة التي هي الفرجة والخلة.
And the camels would depart with them having a deficiency if they were not watered, and they would depart with their thirst, and likewise a man if he is not satiated with food, and all of that is from the meaning of al-khaṣāṣah, which is a gap and a space.
والخصاصة من الكرم: الغصن إذا لم يرو وخرج منه الحب متفرقا ضعيفا.
And al-khaṣāṣah from a vine: is the branch if it is not watered and the grapes come out scattered and weak.
والخصاصة: ما يبقى في الكرم بعد قطافه العنيقيد الصغير هاهنا وآخر هاهنا، والجمع الخصاص، وهو النبذ القليل؛ قال أبو منصور: ويقال له من عذوق النخل الشمل والشماليل، وقال أبو حنيفة: هي الخصاصة، والجمع خصاص، كلاهما بالفتح.
And al-khaṣāṣah: is what remains on the vine after harvesting, small clusters here and another there, and the plural is al-khaṣāṣ, which is a small amount; Abu Mansur said: And from the date palm clusters, it is called al-shamal and al-shamālīl, and Abu Hanifah said: it is al-khaṣāṣah, and the plural is al-khaṣāṣ, both with the fathah.
وشهر خص أي ناقص.
And a month is khaṣṣ, meaning deficient.
والخص: بيت من شجر أو قصب، وقيل: الخص البيت الذي يسقف عليه بخشبة على هيئة الأزج، والجمع أخصاص وخصاص، وقيل في جمعه خصوص، سمي بذلك لأنه يرى ما فيه من خصاصة أي فرجة، وفي التهذيب: سمي خصا لما فيه من الخصاص، وهي التفاريج الضيقة.
And al-khaṣṣ: is a house of trees or reeds, and it is said: al-khaṣṣ is a house that is roofed with a beam in the shape of an arch, and the plural is akhṣāṣ and khaṣāṣ, and it is said that its plural is khuṣūṣ, named so because one can see through its gaps, meaning openings, and in al-Tahdhib: it is called khaṣṣ because of the gaps in it, which are narrow openings.
وفي الحديث: أن أعرابيا أتى باب النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، فألقم عينه خصاصة الباب أي فرجته.
And in the Hadith: An Arab came to the door of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and he put his eye to the gap of the door, meaning its opening.
وحانوت الخمار يسمى خصا؛ ومنه قول امرئ القيس:
And the wine seller's shop is called a khaṣṣ; and from this is the saying of Imru' al-Qais:
كأن التجار أصعدوا بسبيئة ... من الخص، حتى أنزلوها على يسر
As if the merchants brought up a fine wine ... from the hut, until they brought it down to ease.
والخص البيت من القصب؛ قال الفزاري: الخص فيه تقر أعيننا ... خير من الآجر والكمد
And al-khaṣṣ is a house of reeds; Al-Fazzārī said: The hut in which our eyes are pleased ... is better than bricks and sorrow.
وفي الحديث: أنه مر بعبد الله بن عمرو وهو يصلح خصا له.
And in the Hadith: That he passed by Abdullah bin Amr while he was repairing his hut.
