قال أبو زيد: دخلت على أبي الدقيش الأعرابي وهو مريض فقلت له: كيف تجدك يا أبا الدقيش؟ قال: أجد ما لا أشتهي وأشتهي ما لا أجد، وأنا في زمان سوء، زمان من وجد لم يجد، ومن جاد لم يجد.
Abu Zayd said: I entered upon Abu al-Daqaysh the Bedouin while he was ill and said to him: How do you find yourself, O Abu al-Daqaysh? He said: I find what I do not desire and desire what I do not find, and I am in a bad time, a time where whoever finds does not possess, and whoever is generous does not find.

Abu al-Qasim al-Zajjaji mentioned that Ibn Duraid was asked about al-Daqsh, and he said: The Arabs named their children Daqsh and made it diminutive, calling it Daqaysh, and from 'fa'ala' they made 'fa'nalla', so they said 'danaqasha'. He said: And al-Daqaysh is a known grayish, speckled bird among them;
