And Shamir recited concerning al-hanash: So estimate for him, in some of the symptoms of epilepsy, ... a small affliction from a blind, deaf serpent.
فالحنش هاهنا: الحية، وقيل: هو حية أبيض غليظ مثل الثعبان أو أعظم، وقيل: هو الأسود منها، وقيل: هو منها ما أشبهت رؤوسه رؤوس الحرابي وسوام أبرص ونحو ذلك.
So al-hanash here: the snake, and it is said: it is a thick white snake like a python or larger, and it is said: it is the black one of them, and it is said: it is of them that whose heads resemble the heads of chameleons and geckos and the like.
وقال الليث: الحنش ما أشبهت رؤوسه رؤوس الحيات من الحرابي وسوام أبرص ونحوها؛
And Al-Layth said: Al-hanash is that whose head resembles the heads of snakes from chameleons and geckos and the like;
وأنشد: ترى قطعا من الأحناش فيه، ... جماجمهن كالخشل النزيع
And he recited: You see pieces of the creatures in it, ... their skulls like the swift, fleeing ones.
قال شمر: ويقال للضباب واليرابيع قد أحنشت في الظلم أي اطردت وذهبت به؛
Shamir said: And it is said of lizards and jerboas that they have roamed in the darkness, meaning they have gone forth and moved about;
وقال الكميت: فلا ترأم الحيتان أحناش قفرة، ... ولا تحسب النيب الجحاش فصالها
And Al-Kumait said: So the whales do not eat the creatures of the desert, ... nor do you think the she-camels' young are their cubs.
فجعل الحنش دواب الأرض من الحيات وغيرها؛
So he made al-hanash the creatures of the earth, from snakes and others;
وقال كراع: هو كل شيء من الدواب والطير.
And Kura' said: It is everything from the animals and birds.
والحنش، بالتحريك أيضا: كل شيء يصاد من الطير والهوام، والجمع من كل ذلك أحناش.
And al-hanash, with vowelization too: everything that is hunted from birds and vermin, and the plural of all that is ahnash.
وحنش الشيء يحنشه وأحنشه: صاده.
And he hunted/caught the thing, he hunts/catches it, and he hunted/caught it: he caught it.
وحنشت الصيد: صدته.
And she hunted the prey: she caught it.
والمحنوش: الذي لسعته الحنش، وهو الحية؛
And al-mahnush: he who was stung by the hanash, which is the snake;
قال رؤبة: فقل لذاك المزعج المحنوش
Ru'bah said: So say to that one who is disturbed, the one bitten by a snake.
والمحنوش: المسوق جئت به تحنشه أي تسوقه مكرهاً.
And al-mahnush: the driven one, you brought him being driven, meaning you drive him unwillingly.
يقال: حنشه وعنشه إذا ساقه وطرده.
It is said: he drove him and he drove him, if he drove him and expelled him.
ورجل محنوش: مغموز الحسب، وقد حنش.
And a man mahnush: of disparaged lineage, and he has become so.
وحنشه عن الأمر يحنشه: عطفه وهو بمعنى طرده، وقيل: «2» ... عنجه فأبدلت العين حاء والجيم شينا.
