So I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, provoking (accusations) against Fatima, for 'At-Tahreesh' here means mentioning what necessitates her reproach.

وحَرَّشَ الضب يحرشه حرشا واحترشه وتحرشه وتحرش به: أتى قفا جحره فقعقع بعصاه عليه وأتلج طرفها في جحره، فإذا سمع الصوت حسبه دابة تريد أن تدخل عليه، فجاء يزحل على رجليه وعجزه مقاتلا ويضرب بذنبه، فناهزه الرجل أي بادره فأخذ بذنبه فضب عليه أي شد القبض فلم يقدر أن يفيصه أي يفلت منه؛

And he hunted the lizard, disturbing its burrow by rattling his stick on it and inserting its end into his burrow. When it heard the sound, it thought it was an animal wanting to enter, so it came out crawling on its legs and hindquarters, fighting and striking with its tail. The man rushed it, meaning he surprised it, and grabbed its tail, holding on tightly so it could not escape.

وقيل: حرش الضب صيده وهو أن يحك الجحر الذي هو فيه يتحرش به، فإذا أحسه الضب حسبه ثعبانا، فأخرج إليه ذنبه فيصاد حينئذ.

And it was said: 'Harsh al-dabb' is hunting it, which is to scratch the burrow it is in, provoking it. When the lizard senses it, it thinks it is a snake, so it extends its tail, and is then hunted.

يقال لهو أخبث من ضب حرشته، وذلك أن الضب ربما استروح فخدع فلم يقدر عليه.

It is said: 'He is more wicked than a lizard that you have provoked,' because the lizard might sense (danger) and be tricked, and thus not be caught.

ومن أمثالهم: هذا أجل من الحرش؛ وأصل ذلك أن العرب كانت تقول: قال الضب لابنه يا بني احذر الحرش، فسمع يوما وقع محفار على فم الجحر، فقال: بابه «1» أهذا الحرش؟ فقال: يا بني هذا أجل من الحرش؛

And among their proverbs: 'This is more serious than Al-Harsh.' The origin of that is that the Arabs used to say: The lizard said to its son, 'My son, beware of Al-Harsh.' One day, it heard the sound of digging at the mouth of the burrow and said, 'Is this Al-Harsh?' It replied, 'My son, this is more serious than Al-Harsh.'

ومحترش ضب العداوة منهم، ... بحلو الخلى، حرش الضباب الخوادع

And one who provokes the enmity of the people... with sweet talk, provoking the deceptive lizards.

يقال: إنه لحلو الخلى أي حلو الكلام؛ ووضع الحرش موضع الاحتراش لأنه إذا احترشه فقد حرشه؛

It is said: 'He is sweet of speech,' meaning sweet of words. And 'Al-Harsh' is used in place of 'Al-Ihtirash' because if one provokes it, he has 'harash'-ed it.

قال الجوهري: حرش الضب يحرشه حرشا صاده، فهو حارش للضباب، وهو أن يحرك يده على جحره ليظنه حية فيخرج ذنبه ليضربها فيأخذه.

Al-Jawhari said: 'Harasha al-dabb' (he hunts the lizard) means he caught it. He is a hunter of lizards, which is to move his hand over its burrow, making it think it is a snake, so it extends its tail to strike it, and he catches it.

أن رجلا أتاه بضباب احترشها ؛

That a man brought him lizards that he had hunted.

والاحتراش في الأصل الجمع والكسب والخداع.

And 'Al-Ihtirash' in origin means gathering, earning, and deception.

وتحترش به الضباب أي تصطاد.

And the lizards hunt with it, meaning they catch prey.

ما رأيت رجلا ينفر من الحرش مثله ، يعني معاوية، يريد بالحرش الخديعة.

I have not seen a man shy away from deception like him, meaning Mu'awiyah, intending by 'Al-Harsh' deception.

والحرش: الأثر، وخص بعضهم به الأثر في الظهر، وجمعه حراش؛

And 'Al-Harsh': the trace, and some have specified it as a trace on the back, and its plural is 'Hiraash'.

ومننه ربعي بن حراش ولا تقل خراش،

And among them is Ru'bay b. Hiraash, and do not say Khuraash.

وقيل: الحراش أثر الضرب في البعير يبرأ فلا ينبت له شعر ولا وبر.

And it was said: 'Al-Hiraash' is the mark of a blow on a camel that heals but does not grow hair or wool.

حرش البعير بالعصا: حك في غاربه ليمشي؛

He provoked the camel with a stick: he scratched its hump to make it walk.

هذا بعير أحرش وبه حرش؛

This is a camel with sores, and it has a sore.

فطار بكفي ذو حراش مشمر، ... أحذ ذلاذيل العسيب قصير

So a swift one with scars, tall and lean, flew into my hands... short-tailed and swift.

حرشت جرب البعير أحرشه حرشا وخرشته خرشا إذا حككته حتى تقشر الجلد الأعلى فيدمى ثم يطلى حينئذ بالهناء،

I provoked the camel's scab, I scratched it until the upper skin peeled off and bled, then it was treated with ointment.

الحرشاء من الجرب التي لم تطل؛

Al-Harsha' is from the scab that has not spread.

وحَرَّشَهُ، بالحاء والخاء جميعا، حرشا أي خدشه؛

And he scratched it, with both Haa' and Khaa', scratching it, meaning he scratched it.

كأن أصوات كلاب تهترش، ... هاجت بولوال ولجت في حرش

As if the sounds of dogs scratching each other... were agitated by howling and entered into a fight.

الحرش: ضرب من البضع وهي مستلقية.

حرش المرأة حرشا: جامعها مستلقية على قفاها.

He had intercourse with the woman, having intercourse with her while she was lying on her back.

And the people gathered: they assembled, and 'Ihturisha al-shay'' (the thing was gathered): he collected and earned it.

لو كنت ذا لب تعيش به، ... لفعلت فعل المرء ذي اللب لجعلت صالح ما احترشت، وما ... جمعت من نهب، إلى نهب

If you were intelligent enough to live by, ... you would do the deed of an intelligent person. You would make the good of what you have gathered, and what ... you have collected from plunder, into more plunder.

الأحرش من الدنانير: ما فيه خشونة لجدته؛

Al-Ahrosh of dinars: that which has roughness due to its newness.

أن رجلا أخذ من رجل آخر دنانير حرشا ؛ جمع أحرش وهو كل شيء خشن، أراد أنها كانت جديدة فعليها خشونة النقش.

That a man took from another man rough dinars; the plural of 'ahrosh', which is anything rough. He meant that they were new, and the engraving had roughness on them.

ودراهم حرش: جياد خشن حديثة العهد بالسكة.

And rough dirhams: fine, rough, recently minted.

والضب أحرش، وضب أحرش: خشن الجلد كأنه محزز.

And the lizard is rough, and a rough lizard: coarse-skinned as if grooved.

وأفعى حرشاء: خشنة الجلدة، وهي الحريش والحربيش؛

And a rough snake: coarse-skinned, and it is Al-Harish and Al-Harbeesh.

تضحك مني أن رأتني أحترش، ... ولو حرشت لكشفت عن حرش

She laughs at me when she sees me provoking, ... and if I provoked her, she would reveal her roughness.

وقيل: الحرشاء من نبات السهل وهي تنبت في الديار لازقة بالأرض وليست بشيء، ولو لحس الإنسان منها ورقة لزقت بلسانه، وليس لها صيور؛

And it was said: Al-Harsha' is from the plants of the plain, and it grows in dwellings, sticking to the ground and is insignificant. If a person licked a leaf from it, it would stick to his tongue, and it has no stem.

وهي أعشاب معروفة تستطيبها الراعية.

And they are known herbs that the shepherdess finds palatable.

والحرشاء: خردل البر.

And Al-Harsha': wild mustard.

وانحت من حرشاء فلج خردله، ... وأقبل النمل قطارا تنقله

And I carved from Harsha' of Falaj its mustard seeds, ... and the ants came in procession carrying them.

والحريش: دابة لها مخالب كمخالب الأسد وقرن واحد في وسط هامتها، زاد الجوهري: يسميها الناس الكركدن؛

And Al-Harish: a creature with claws like a lion's claws and one horn in the middle of its head. Al-Jawhari added: People call it the rhinoceros.

بها الحريش وضغز مائل ضبر، ... يلوي إلى رشح منها وتقليص «2»

In it is Al-Harish and a leaning, strong bite, ... twisting towards a trickle from it and a drawing in.

وكأن الحريش والهرميس شيء واحد،

And it seems that Al-Harish and Al-Harmis are one thing.
