الجَحْشُ: ولد الحمار الوحشي والأهلي، وقيل: إنما ذلك قبل أن يفطم.
The jashsh: the young of the wild and domestic donkey, and it is said: that is only before weaning.
الجَحْشُ من أولاد الحمار كالمهر من الخيل.
The jashsh is to the young of a donkey as the mahra (foal) is to a horse.
الجَحْشُ من أولاد الحمير حين تضعه أمه إلى أن يفطم من الرضاع، فإذا استكمل الحول فهو تولب، والجمع جَحَاش وجَحْشَة وجَحْشَان، والأنثى بالهاء جَحْشَة.
The jashsh is from the young of donkeys from when its mother gives birth until it is weaned from milk; when it completes a year, it is a tawlab, and the plural is jashash, jashsha, and jashshan, and the female is with the ة, a jashsha.
وفي المثل: الجَحْشُ لما بذك الأعيار أي سبقك الأعيار فعليك بالجَحْشُ؛ يضرب هذا لمن يطلب الأمر الكبير فيفوته فيقال له: اطلب دون ذلك، وربما سمي المهر جَحْشًا تشبيها بولد الحمار.
And in the proverb: The jashsh is when the 'ayyar (a type of wild ass) is too much for you, meaning the 'ayyar has outpaced you, so you must resort to the jashsh; this is said of one who seeks a great matter and misses it, so he is told: seek something less than that, and sometimes a foal is called a jashsh by analogy with a young donkey.
ويقال في العيي الرأي المنفرد به: جُحَيْشٌ وحده كما قالوا: هو عَيِيرٌ وحده يشبهونه في ذلك بالجَحْشِ والعَيِيرِ، وهو ذم، يقال ذلك في الرجل يستبد برأيه.
And it is said about one who is incapable of a solitary opinion: he is a solitary juhaysh, just as they said: he is a solitary 'ayyar, likening him in that to the jashsh and the 'ayyar, and it is a dispraise; this is said of a man who acts unilaterally with his opinion.
والجَحْشُ: ولد الظبية، هذلية؛ قال أبو ذؤيب: بأسفل ذات الدير أفرد جَحْشَها، ... فقد ولهت يومين، فهي خلوج
And the jashsh: the young of a gazelle, Hudhali; Abu Dhu'ayb said: At the bottom of Dhat al-Dayr, she singled out her jashsh... for two days she has been distressed, and she is a mother mourning her young.
والجَحْشُ أيضا: الصبي بلغتهم.
And the jashsh is also: the child in their dialect.
والجَحْشُوشُ: الغلام السمين، وقيل: هو فوق الجَفْر، والجَفْر فوق الفطيم.
And the jashshush: the fat boy, and it is said: he is above the jafar (weaned child), and the jafar is above the weaned one.
قتلنا مخلدا وابني حراق، ... وآخر جَحْشُوشًا فوق الفطيم
We killed Mukhallad and the son of Hurraq, ... and another jashshush, above the weaned one.
واجْتَحَشَشَ الغلام: عَظُمَ بطنه، وقيل: قارب الاحتلام، وقيل: احتلم، وقيل: إذا شك فيه.
And the boy became jashash: his stomach grew large, and it is said: he approached puberty, and it is said: he reached puberty, and it is said: if there is doubt about him.
والجَحْشُ: سَحْجُ الجلد. يقال: أصابه شيء فجَحَشَ وجهه وبه جَحْشٌ، وقد قيل: لا يكون الجَحْشُ في الوجه ولا في البدن، وسنذكره هنا.
And the jashsh: abrasion of the skin. It is said: something struck him and his face was abraded and he had a jashsh on it, and it has been said: the jashsh does not occur on the face nor on the body, and we will mention it here.
قال ابن سيده: جَحَشَهُ يجْحَشُهُ جَحْشًا خدشه، وقيل: هو أن يصيبه شيء يتسحج منه كالخدش أو أكبر منه.
Ibn Sidah said: He scratched it, he scratches it, a scratch; and it is said: it is that something strikes it and it is abraded like a scratch or larger than it.
روي عن النبي، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أنه سقط من فرس فجَحَشَ شَقُّهُ أي انخدش جلده؛ قال الكسائي في جَحَشَ: هو أن يصيبه شيء فينسحج منه جلده، وهو كالخدش أو أكبر من ذلك.
It is narrated from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he fell from a horse and his side was scratched, meaning his skin was abraded; Al-Kisa'i said about jashasha: it is that something strikes it and its skin is abraded, and it is like a scratch or larger than that.
يقال: جَحَشَ يجْحَشُ، فهو مَجْحُوشٌ.
It is said: he scratched, he scratches, so he is scratched.
وجَحَشَ عن القوم: تنحى، ومنه قول النعمان بن بشير: فبينا أسير في بلاد عذرة إذا ببيت حريد جَاحِشٌ عن الحي،
And he withdrew from the people: he moved aside, and from this is the saying of Al-Nu'man bin Bashir: While I was traveling in the land of 'Adhra, I saw a tent of a secluded person withdrawn from the tribe,
والجُحَيْشُ: المتنحي عن الناس؛ قال: كم ساق من دار امرئ جُحَيْشٌ
And the juhaysh: the one who withdraws from people; he said: How many a juhaysh has passed by the house of a man.
إذا نزل الحي حل الجُحَيْشُ، ... سقيا مبينا غويا غيورا لها مالك كان يخشى القراف، ... إذا خالط الظن منه الضميرا
When the tribe settles, the juhaysh settles... May it be watered, a clear, passionate, jealous one, whose owner feared intimacy, when suspicion mixed with his inner thoughts.
والحريد في قول النعمان بن بشير: الذي تنحى عن قومه وانفرد؛ معناه انفرد عن الناس لكونه غويا بامرأته غيورا عليها، يقول: هو يغار فيتنحى بحرمته عن الحلال، ومن رواه الجُحَيْش رفعه بحل، ويجوز أن يكون خبر مبتدإ مضمر من باب مررت به المسكين أي هو المسكين أو المسكين هو، ومن رواه الجُحَيْش نصبه على الظرف كأنه قال ناحية منفردة، أو جعله حالا على زيادة اللام من باب جاؤوا الجماء الغفير، وجعل اللام زائدة البتة دخولها كسقوطها؛ كما أنشد الأصمعي من قوله: ولقد نهيتك عن بنات الأوبر أراد بنات أوبر فزاد اللام زيادة ساذجة؛ وروى الجوهري هذا البيت: إذا نزل الحي حل الجُحَيْشُ، ... حريد المحل غويا غيورا
And Al-Harid in the saying of Al-Nu'man bin Bashir: one who withdraws from his people and isolates himself; meaning he isolates himself from people because he is passionately jealous of his wife; he says: he is jealous and withdraws his women from what is permissible. And whoever narrated it as Al-Juhaysh, he raised it with 'hall' (settlement), and it is permissible for it to be the predicate of an implied subject, from the pattern 'I passed by him, the poor one', meaning he is the poor one or the poor one is he. And whoever narrated it as Al-Juhaysh, he made it accusative as an adverb, as if he said a solitary place, or made it an adjective with the addition of 'lam' from the pattern 'they came in a large, dense crowd', and made the 'lam' completely superfluous, its entry being like its omission; as Al-Asma'i recited from his saying: And indeed I warned you against the daughters of Al-Abir, meaning the daughters of Abir, so he added 'lam' as a simple addition; Al-Jawhari narrated this verse: When the tribe settles, Al-Juhaysh settles... secluded in place, passionate, jealous.
وقال أبو حنيفة: الجُحَيْشُ الفريد الذي لا يزحمه في داره مزاحم. يقال: نزل فلان جُحَيْشًا إذا نزل حريدا فريدا.
And Abu Hanifa said: Al-Juhaysh is the solitary one who has no one crowding him in his house. It is said: So-and-so settled as a juhaysh if he settled alone and solitary.
والجُحَيْشُ: الشق والناحية. ويقال: نزل فلان الجُحَيْشَ؛ وأنشد بيت الأعشى: إذا نزل الحي حل الجُحَيْشَ، ... سقيا مبينا غويا غيورا
And Al-Juhaysh: the split and the side. And it is said: So-and-so settled in Al-Juhaysh; and he recited the verse of Al-A'sha: When the tribe settles, Al-Juhaysh settles... May it be watered, a clear, passionate, jealous one.
قال: ويكون الرجل مَجْحُوشًا إذا أصيب شقه مشتقا من هذا، قال: ولا يكون الجَحْشُ في الوجه ولا في البدن؛ وأنشد: لجارتنا الجنب الجُحَيْشُ، ولا يرى ... لجارتنا منا أخ وصديق
He said: And a man can be majhush if his side is injured, derived from this. He said: And the jashsh does not occur on the face nor on the body; and he recited: To our neighbor, the side, the juhaysh, and no one sees... from us a brother and a friend to our neighbor.
وقال الآخر: إذا الضيف ألقى نعله عن شماله ... جُحَيْشًا، وصلى النار حقا ملثما
And another said: When the guest throws his sandal from his left side... juhayshan, and prays to the fire, truly, with his face covered.
قال: جُحَيْشًا أي جانبا بعيدا.
He said: juhayshan, meaning a distant side.
والجُحَاشُ والمُجَاحَشَةُ: المزاولة في الأمر.
And Al-Juhash and Al-Mujashasha: the engagement in a matter.
وجَاحَشَ القومَ جُحَاشًا: زَحَمَهُم.
And he jostled the people, a jostling: he pushed them.
وجَاحَشَ عن نفسه وغيرها جُحَاشًا: دَافَعَ.
And he defended himself and others, a defense: he repelled.
الليث: الجُحَاشُ مدافعة الإنسان الشيء عن نفسه وعن غيره، وقال غيره: هو الجُحَاشُ والجُحَاسُ، وقد جَاحَشَهُ وجَاحَسَهُ مُجَاحَشَةً ومُجَاحَسَةً: دَافَعَهُ وقَاتَلَهُ.
Al-Layth: Al-Juhash is a person's defense of something from himself and from others, and others said: it is Al-Juhash and Al-Juhas, and he defended him and fought him with mujashasha and mujahasa: he defended and fought him.
وفي حديث شهادة الأعضاء يوم القيامة: بعدا لكن وسحقًا فعنكن كنت أجَاحِشُ أي أحامي وأدافع.
And in the hadith about the testimony of the limbs on the Day of Resurrection: 'Away with you and destruction! For you I used to defend', meaning I protect and repel.
والجُحَاشُ أيضا: القتال.
And Al-Juhash also: fighting.
ابن الأعرابي: الجَحْشُ الجهاد، قال: وتحول الشين سينا: وأنشد: يومًا ترانا في عراك الجَحْشِ، ... ننبو بأجلال الأمور الربش
Ibn Al-A'rabi: Al-Jashsh is jihad, he said: and the shin is changed to sin: and he recited: One day you see us in the combat of jihad, ... we repel the great calamities.
أي الدواهي العظام.
Meaning the great calamities.
والجَحْشَةُ: حلقة من صوف أو وبر يجعلها الرجل في ذراعه ويغزلها.
And Al-Jashsha: a ring of wool or hair that a man puts on his arm and spins it.
وقد سموا جَحْشًا ومُجَاحِشًا وجُحَيْشًا.
And they have named [people] Jashsh, Mujashish, and Juhaysh.
وبنو جَحَاشٍ: بطن، منهم الشماخ بن ضرار.
And Banu Juhash: a clan, among them Al-Shammakh bin Dirar.
جُحَاش أبو حي من غطفان، وهو جُحَاش بن ثعلبة بن ذبيان بن بغيض بن ريث بن غطفان. قال: وهم قوم الشماخ بن ضرار؛ قال الشاعر: وجاءت جَحَاشٌ قضها بقضيضها، ... وجمع عوال، ما أدق وألأما
Juhash, the ancestor of a tribe from Ghaṭafān, and he is Juhash bin Tha'labah bin Dhibyan bin Baghidh bin Rayth bin Ghaṭafān. He said: And they are the people of Al-Shammakh bin Dirar; the poet said: And Juhash came, its scattered parts and its broken parts, ... and a collection of high-born ones, how precise and ignoble.
