And it was said: Abu Buraqish is a bird that changes colors, resembling a hedgehog, its top feathers are grey, its middle is red, and its bottom is black, so when it fluffs up, its color changes to various hues.
وصف قوما مشهورين بالمقابح لا يستحون ولا يحتفلون بمن رآهم على ذلك، ويغدوا بدل من قوله لا يحفلوا لأن غدوهم مرجلين دليل على أنهم لم يحفلوا.
He described people famous for their ugliness who are not ashamed and do not care who sees them in that state, and they go out as a substitute for his saying 'they do not care' because their going out with combed hair is evidence that they did not care.

أبو براقش طائر يكون في العضاه ولونه بين السواد والبياض، وله ست قوائم ثلاث من جانب وثلاث من جانب، وهو ثقيل العجز تسمع له حفيفا إذا طار، وهو يتلون ألوانا.
Abu Buraqish is a bird found in thorny bushes, its color is between black and white, it has six legs, three on one side and three on the other, it is heavy in the hindquarters, you hear a rustling when it flies, and it changes colors.
وفي المثل: على أهلها دلت براقش،
And in the proverb: Buraqish indicated its people.
براقش اسم كلبة نبحت على جيش مروا ولم يشعروا بالحي الذي فيه الكلبة، فلما سمعوا نباحها علموا أن أهلها هناك فعطفوا عليهم فاستباحوهم، فذهبت مثلا،
Buraqish is the name of a dog that barked at an army that passed by, and they did not notice the tribe where the dog was. When they heard its barking, they knew its people were there, so they turned towards them and plundered them, and it became a proverb.
ويروى هذا المثل: على أهلها تجني براقش؛
And this proverb is narrated: Buraqish brings harm upon its people.
فذهبت مثلا، ويروى هذا المثل: على أهلها تجني براقش؛ وعليه قول حمزة بن بيض: لم تكن عن جناية لحقتني، ... لا يساري ولا يميني جنتني بل جناها أخ علي كريم، ... وعلى أهلها براقش تجني
And it became a proverb, and this proverb is narrated: Buraqish brings harm upon its people; and on this is the saying of Hamza bin Bayd: It was not from a crime that befell me, ... neither my left nor my right committed it, but rather my generous brother committed it, ... and Buraqish brings harm upon its people.
فسمعت براقش وقع حوافر الخيل فنبحت فاستدلوا على موضع نباحها فاستباحوهم.
So Buraqish heard the sound of horses' hooves and barked, and they deduced the location of its barking and plundered them.
وكان بنو أبيه لا يأكلون لحوم الإبل، فأصاب من براقش غلاما فنزل لقمان على بني أبيها فأولموا ونحروا جزورا إكراما له، فراحت براقش بعرق من الجزور فدفعته لزوجها لقمان فأكله، فقال: ما هذا؟ ما تعرقت مثله قط طيبا فقالت براقش: هذا من لحم جزور، قال: أولحوم الإبل كلها هكذا في الطيب؟ قالت: نعم، ثم قالت له: جملنا واجتمل، فأقبل لقمان على إبلها وإبل أهلها فأشرع فيها وفعل ذلك بنو أبيه، فقيل: على أهلها تجني براقش، فصارت مثلا.
And the sons of his father did not eat camel meat. He got a boy from Buraqish, so Luqman descended upon her father's sons, and they prepared a feast and slaughtered a camel in his honor. Buraqish brought a piece of meat from the camel and gave it to her husband Luqman, who ate it. He said: What is this? I have never tasted anything so delicious. Buraqish said: This is from camel meat. He said: Are all camel meats this delicious? She said: Yes. Then she said to him: Our camel and the camels of her people. So Luqman turned to her camels and her people's camels and partook of them, and his father's sons did the same. It was said: Buraqish brings harm upon its people, and it became a proverb.
براقش اسم امرأة وهي ابنة ملك قديم خرج إلى بعض مغازيه واستخلفها على ملكه فأشار عليها بعض وزرائها أن تبني بناء تذكر به، فبنت موضعين يقال لهما براقش ومعين، فلما قدم أبوها قال لها: أردت أن يكون الذكر لك دوني، فأمر الصناع الذين بنوهما بأن يهدموها، فقالت العرب: على أهلها تجني براقش
Buraqish is the name of a woman, the daughter of an ancient king who went out on some of his campaigns and left her in charge of his kingdom. Some of her ministers suggested she build a structure to be remembered by. So she built two places called Buraqish and Ma'in. When her father returned, he said to her: You wanted the remembrance to be yours alone. He ordered the craftsmen who built them to demolish them. The Arabs said: Buraqish brings harm upon its people.
أن براقش ومعين مدينتان بنيتا في سبعين أو ثمانين سنة؛
That Buraqish and Ma'in are two cities built in seventy or eighty years.
دعانا من براقش أو معين، ... فأسرع واتلأب بنا مليع
He called us from Buraqish or Ma'in, ... and he hurried and straightened us out on a level path.
