Ru'bah said: And I left my companion to be speckled by me... and I dropped from a multicolored thing, meaning it has colors.

والأبرش: لقب جذيمة بن مالك وكان به برص فكنوا به عنه، وقيل: سمي الأبرش لأنه أصابه حرق فبقي فيه من أثر الحرق نقط سود أو حمر، وقيل: لأنه أصابه برص فهابت العرب أن تقول أبرص فقالت أبرش.

And Al-Abrash: is the nickname of Judhaymah ibn Malik, and he had vitiligo, so they nicknamed him that. It was said: He was named Al-Abrash because he was afflicted by a burn, and spots of black or red remained from the burn's effect. It was said: Because he was afflicted with vitiligo, and the Arabs were hesitant to say 'absar (leprous) so they said 'abrash.

وفي التهذيب: وكان جذيمة الملك أبرص فلقبته العرب الأبرش؛ الأبرش: الأرقط والأنمر الذي تكون فيه بقعة بيضاء وأخرى أي لون كان، والأشيم: الذي يكون به شام في جسده، والمدثر: الذي يكون به نكت فوق البرش.

And in Al-Tahdhib: Judhaymah the king was leprous, so the Arabs nicknamed him Al-Abrash. Al-Abrash: is the spotted and the leopard-like, which has a white patch and another of any color. Al-Ashyam: is one who has marks on his body. Al-Mudaththar: is one who has spots over the dappled pattern.

وفي حديث الطرماح: رأيت جذيمة الأبرش قصيرا أبيرش ؛ هو تصغير أبرش.

And in the hadith of Al-Tirmmah: I saw Judhaymah Al-Abrash, short, a little dappled; it is the diminutive of abrash.

والبرشة: هو لون مختلط حمرة وبياضا أو غيرهما من الألوان.

And al-barshah: is a color mixed with redness and whiteness or other colors.

وبرذون أربش: ذو برش.

And an arbash mule: is one with dappled markings.

وسنة ربشاء ورمشاء وبرشاء: كثيرة العشب.

And a year that is 'arba', 'arma', or 'barsha': is abundant with grass.

وقولهم: دخلنا في البرشاء أي في جماعة الناس.

And their saying: We entered into al-barsha', meaning into a crowd of people.

ابن سيده: وبرشاء الناس جماعتهم الأسود والأحمر، وما أدري أي البرشاء هو أي أي الناس هو.

Ibn Sidah: And barsha' of people is their multitude, black and red. And I do not know which barsha' it is, meaning which people it is.

وأرض برشاء وربشاء: كثيرة النبت مختلف ألوانها، ومكان أبرش كذلك.

And land that is barsha' or 'arba': is abundant with vegetation of different colors, and a place that is abrash is likewise.

وبنو البرشاء: قبيلة، سموا بذلك لبرش أصاب أمهم؛ قال النابغة: ورب بني البرشاء ذهل وقيسها ... وشيبان، حيث استنهلتها المناهل

And Banu Al-Barsha': a tribe, they were named that because of dappling that afflicted their mother. Al-Nabighah said: And many of Banu Al-Barsha', Dhuhl and Qays, and Shayban, when the watering places made them descend.

And Barshan: is a name.

والأبرشية: موضع؛ أنشد ابن الأعرابي: نظرت بقصر الأبرشية نظرة، ... وطرفي وراء الناظرين قصير

And Al-Abrashiyyah: is a place. Ibn Al-A'rabi recited: I looked at the palace of Al-Abrashiyyah a glance... and my gaze was short of the onlookers.
