It is said: his soul whispered to him a waswasa and a wiswas, with kasra of the waw, and al-wiswas, with fatha, is the noun like az-zilzal and az-zilzal, and al-wiswas, with kasra, is the masdar.

والوسواس، بالفتح: هو الشيطان.

And al-wiswas, with fatha: he is the Satan.

وكل ما حدثك ووسوس إليك، فهو اسم.

And whatever speaks to you and whispers to you, it is a noun.

فوسوس لهما الشيطان؛ يريد إليهما ولكن العرب توصل بهذه الحروف كلها الفعل.

So Satan whispered to them; meaning towards them, but the Arabs connect the verb with all these letters.

ويقال لهمس الصائد والكلاب وأصوات الحلي: وسواس؛

And the quiet sound of the hunter, dogs, and the sounds of jewelry are called waswas;

تسمع للحلي وسواسا، إذا انصرفت، ...

والوسواس والهضب يعني بالوسواس همس الصياد وكلامه.

And al-wiswas and al-hadhb, by al-wiswas he means the hunter's whisper and his speech.

سمعت خليفة يقول الوسوسة الكلام الخفي في اختلاط.

I heard Khalifa say al-waswasa is hidden speech in confusion.

الحمد لله الذي رد كيده إلى الوسوسة ؛ هي حديث النفس والأفكار.

Praise be to Allah who turned his plot back to the waswasa; it is the talk of the soul and thoughts.

ورجل موسوس إذا غلبت عليه الوسوسة.

And a man is muswas if waswasa overcomes him.

لما قبض رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، وسوس ناس وكنت فيمن وسوس ؛ يريد أنه اختلط كلامه ودهش بموته، صلى الله عليه وسلم.

When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed away, people became confused and I was among those who were confused; meaning their speech became mixed and they were bewildered by his death, peace be upon him.

من شر الوسواس الخناس ؛ أراد ذي الوسواس وهو الشيطان الذي يوسوس في صدور الناس،

وسوس يدعو مخلصا رب الفلق

He whispers, calling sincerely to the Lord of the dawn

وسوس الرجل: كلمه كلاما خفيا.

ووسوس إذا تكلم بكلام لم يبينه.

And he whispered if he spoke with unclear words.
