The word 'nafs' in the speech of Arabs runs on two types.
أحدهما قولك خرجت نفس فلان أي روحه

That which does not have a flowing soul does not make the water impure if it dies in it.

فإن غشيتكم عند طعامكم فألقوا لهن فإن لهن أنفسا
If they (cats) approach you during your meal, throw something to them, for they have eyes (that envy).
نفس عليك فلان ينفس نفسا ونفاسة
So-and-so envied you, feeling envy and jealousy.
والنفس: الفرج من الكرب
And 'nafs' means relief from distress.
إنها من نفس الرحمن
It is from the breath of the Merciful.
أجد نفس ربكم من قبل اليمن
I feel the relief of your Lord coming from the direction of Yemen.
وكل تروح بين شربتين نفس
And every pause between two drinks is a 'nafas'.
نهى عن التنفس في الإناء
He forbade breathing into the vessel.
شراب غير ذي نفس
A drink that is not 'dhu nafas' (stale or unpleasant).
