And he was among the Kharijites with Bilal bin Murdas,

وكانت الخوارج وقعت بأسلم بن زرعة الكلابي، وهم في أربعين رجلا، وهو في ألفي رجل، فقتلت قطعة من أصحابه وانهزم إلى البصرة

And the Kharijites attacked Aslam bin Zur'ah al-Kilabi, and they were forty men, and he was with two thousand men, so a portion of his companions were killed and he fled to Basra.

فقال مودود هذا الشعر في قوم من بني تميم فيهم شدة،

So Mawdud composed this poetry about a people from Banu Tamim who had fierceness,

وكانت لهم وقعة بسجستان، فشبههم في شدتهم بالخوارج الذين كان فيهم كهمس بن طلق،

And they had a battle in Sijistan, so he likened them in their fierceness to the Kharijites who had Kahmas bin Talq among them,

وحىوا يعني الخوارج أصحاب كهمس، أي كأن هؤلاء القوم أصحاب كهمس في قوتهم وشدتهم ونصرتهم.

And they were revived, meaning the Kharijites, companions of Kahmas, meaning these people are like the companions of Kahmas in their strength, fierceness, and support.
