والقبس: النار.
And al-qabas: the fire.
والقبس: الشعلة من النار.
And al-qabas: the flame from the fire.
وفي التهذيب: القبس شعلة من نار تقتبسها من معظم، واقتباسها الأخذ منها.
And in Al-Tahdhib: Al-qabas is a flame of fire that you take from a larger source, and its iqtabas is taking from it.
بشهاب قبس : القبس: الجذوة، وهي النار التي تأخذها في طرف عود.
with a flaming meteor: Al-qabas is the burning coal, which is the fire you take on the end of a stick.
حتى أورى قبسا لقابس
until he kindled a flame for a seeker.
أي أظهر نورا من الحق لطالبه.
meaning he revealed a light of truth for its seeker.
والقابس: طالب النار، وهو فاعل من قبس، والجمع أقباس، لا يكسر على غير ذلك، وكذلك المقباس.
And the qābis: the seeker of fire, and he is the active participle from qabasa, and the plural is aqbās, it is not broken otherwise, and likewise the miqbās.
ويقال: قبست منه نارا أقبس قبسا فأقبسني أي أعطاني منه قبسا، وكذلك اقتبست منه نارا، واقتبست منه علما أيضا أي استفدته.
And it is said: I took fire from him, I take fire, taking, and he gave me a flame from it, and likewise I acquired fire from him, and I acquired knowledge from him too, meaning I benefited from it.
قال الكسائي: واقتبست منه علما ونارا سواء، قال: وقبست أيضا فيها.
Al-Kisa'i said: And I acquired knowledge and fire from him equally, he said: and I also took fire from it.
وفي الحديث: من اقتبس علما من النجوم اقتبس شعبة من السحر.
And in the Hadith: Whoever acquires knowledge from the stars acquires a branch of magic.
وفي حديث العرباض: أتيناك زائرين ومقتبسين أي طالبي العلم، وقد قبس النار يقبسها قبسا واقتبسها.
And in the Hadith of Al-Irbaḍ: We came to you as visitors and seekers, meaning seekers of knowledge, and he took fire, he takes it, taking, and he took it.
وقبسه النار يقبسه: جاءه بها: واقتبسه وقبستكه واقتبستكه.
And he brought him fire, he brings it to him: and I brought it to him, and I brought it to you, and I brought it to you.
وقال بعضهم: قبستك نارا وعلما، بغير ألف وقيل: أقبسته علما وقبسته نارا أو خيرا إذا جئته به، فإن كان طلبها له قال: أقبسته، بالألف.
And some of them said: I gave you fire and knowledge, without alif, and it was said: I gave him knowledge and I gave him fire or good if you brought it to him, and if he requested it for himself, he said: I gave him (aqbastuhu), with alif.
وقال الكسائي: أقبسته نارا أو علما سواء، قال: وقد يجوز طرح الألف منهما.
Al-Kisa'i said: I gave him fire or knowledge equally, he said: and it is permissible to omit the alif from both.
ابن الأعرابي: قبسني نارا ومالا وأقبسني علما، وقد يقال بغير الألف.
Ibn Al-A'rabi: He gave me fire and wealth, and He gave me knowledge, and it may be said without alif.
وفي حديث عقبة بن عامر: فإذا راح أقبسناه ما سمعنا من رسول الله، صلى الله عليه وسلم، أي أعلمناه إياه.
And in the Hadith of Uqbah ibn Amir: And when he returned, we informed him of what we heard from the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, meaning we taught it to him.
والقوابس: الذين يقبسون الناس الخير يعني يعلمون.
And Al-Qawābis: those who give people good, meaning they teach.
وأتانا فلان يقتبس العلم فأقبسناه أي علمناه.
And so-and-so came to us seeking knowledge, and we gave him knowledge, meaning we taught him.
وأقبسنا فلانا فأبى أن يقبسنا أي يعطينا نارا.
And we offered something to so-and-so, and he refused to give us fire.
وقد اقتبسني إذا قال: أعطني نارا.
And he asked me for fire if he said: Give me fire.
وقبست العلم وأقبسته فلانا.
And I acquired knowledge and I gave it to so-and-so.
والمقبس والمقباس: ما قبست به النار.
And the miqbas and miqbās: what you used to take fire with.
وفحل قبس وقبس وقبيس: سريع الإلقاح، لا ترجع عنه أنثى، وقيل: هو الذي يلقح لأول قرعة، وقيل: هو الذي ينجب من ضربة واحدة، وقد قبس الفحل، بالكسر، قبسا وقبس قباسة وأقبسها: ألقحها سريعا.
And a qabas stallion, qabis, and qabīs: rapidly impregnating, the female does not reject him, and it is said: he is the one who impregnates on the first try, and it is said: he is the one who succeeds from a single strike, and the stallion became qabis, with kasra, qabasan and qabāsatun and aqbasahā: he impregnated her quickly.
وفي المثل: لقوة صادفت قبيسا؛ قال الشاعر: حملت ثلاثة فوضعت تما، ... فأم لقوة، وأب قبيس
And in the proverb: Laqwah encountered Qubays; a poet said: I carried three and gave birth to two, ... mother Laqwah, and father Qubays.
واللقوة: السريعة الحمل. يقال: امرأة لقوة سريعة اللقح؛ وفحل قبيس: مثله إذا كان سريع الإلقاح إذا ضرب الناقة.
And Al-Laqwah: the one who conceives quickly. It is said: a woman is Laqwah, quick to conceive; and a Qubays stallion: like him, if he is rapid in impregnation when he mounts the she-camel.
قال الأزهري: سمعت امرأة من العرب تقول أنا مقباس؛ أرادت أنها تحمل سريعا إذا ألم بها الرجل، وكانت تستوصفني دواء إذا شربته لم تحمل معه.
Al-Azhari said: I heard a woman from the Arabs say, 'I am miqbās'; she meant that she conceives quickly when a man approaches her, and she was asking me for medicine that if she drank it, she would not conceive with it.
وقابوس: اسم عجمي معرب.
And Qābūs: a foreign name, Arabized.
وأبو قبيس: جبل مشرف على مكة، وفي التهذيب: جبل مشرف على مسجد مكة، وفي الصحاح: جبل بمكة.
And Abu Qubays: a mountain overlooking Mecca, and in Al-Tahdhib: a mountain overlooking the mosque of Mecca, and in Al-Siḥāḥ: a mountain in Mecca.
والقابوس: الجميل الوجه الحسن اللون، وكان النعمان بن المنذر يكنى أبا قابوس.
And the qābūs: the beautiful-faced, good-complexioned one, and Al-Nu'man ibn Al-Mundhir was known by the kunya Abu Qābūs.
وقابس وقبيس: اسمان؛ قال أبو ذؤيب: ويا ابني قبيس ولم يكلما، ... إلى أن يضيء عمود السحر
And Qābis and Qubays: two names; Abu Dhu'ayb said: O my two sons of Qubays, and they had not spoken... until the dawn broke.
والنابغة أبا قبيس للضرورة فصغره تصغير الترخيم فقال يخاطب يزيد بن الصعق: فإن يقدر عليك أبو قبيس، ... يحط بك المعيشة في هوان
And Al-Nābighah used Abu Qubays out of necessity, so he diminutized it with a truncated diminutive, saying, addressing Yazid ibn Al-Sa'iq: If Abu Qubays has power over you, ... he will bring down your livelihood in disgrace.
نبئت أن أبا قابوس أوعدني، ... ولا قرار على زأر من الأسد
I was informed that Abu Qābūs threatened me, ... and there is no rest from the roar of a lion.
