And in his description, peace be upon him: 'Not an aged unmarried woman, nor a senile person'.
العانس من الرجال والنساء: الذي يبقى زمانا بعد أن يدرك لا يتزوج، وأكثر ما يستعمل في النساء.
The 'anis' from men and women: is one who remains for a time after maturity without marrying, and it is most often used for women.
يقال: عنست المرأة، فهي عانس، وعنست، فهي معنسة إذا كبرت وعجزت في بيت أبويها.
It is said: The woman remained unmarried, so she is 'anis', and she became incapable, so she is 'mu'nasah' if she grew old and became frail in her parents' home.
قال الجوهري: عنست الجارية تعنس إذا طال مكثها في منزل أهلها بعد إدراكها حتى خرجت من عداد الأبكار، هذا ما لم تتزوج؛ فإن تزوجت مرة فلا يقال عنست
Al-Jawhari said: The young woman remained unmarried, she remains unmarried, if her stay in her family's home was prolonged after reaching puberty until she was no longer counted among virgins, provided she did not marry; if she married once, she is not called 'anis'.
والبيض قد عنست وطال جراؤها
And the fair ones have remained unmarried and their pregnancy has been prolonged.

سئل عن الرجل يدخل بالمرأة على أنها بكر فيقول لم أجدها عذراء، فقال: إن العذرة قد يذهبها التعنيس والحيضة
He was asked about a man who enters upon a woman thinking she is a virgin and then says 'I did not find her virgin', so he replied: 'Indeed, virginity can be lost by remaining unmarried and by menstruation'.
وقال الليث: عنست إذا صارت نصفا وهي بكر ولم تتزوج.
And Al-Layth said: She became 'anis' if she reached middle age while still a virgin and unmarried.
وقال الفراء: امرأة عانس التي لم تتزوج وهي تترقب ذلك، وهي المعنسة.
And Al-Farra' said: A 'anis' woman is one who has not married and is anticipating it, and she is the 'mu'nisah'.
والعاتق: التي في بيت أبويها ولم يقع عليها اسم الزوج، وكذلك العانس.
And the 'atiqah': is she who is in her parents' house and the name of husband has not fallen upon her, and likewise the 'anis'.
وفلان لم تعنس السن وجهه أي لم تغيره إلى الكبر
And so-and-so, age has not aged his face, meaning it has not changed it towards old age.
أعنس الشيب رأسه إذا خالطه
Gray hair mixed with his head if it mingled with it.
والعنس من الإبل فوق البكارة أي الصغار.
And 'al-'uns' from camels is above the young ones, meaning the small ones.
جعل الفحل يضرب في أبكارها وعنسها؛ يعني بالأبكار جمع بكر، والعنس المتوسطات التي لسن بأبكار.
He made the stud mount among their young ones and their 'uns'; meaning by 'abkar' the plural of 'bikr', and by 'al-'uns' the intermediate ones which are not 'abkar'.
