وقيل: سمت العرب البغل عدسا بالزجر وسببه لا أنه اسم له، وأصل عدس في الزجر فلما كثر في كلامهم وفهم أنه زجر له سمي به،
And it is said: The Arabs named the mule 'adas from the urging and its cause, not that it is its name, and the origin of 'adas is in urging, so when it became frequent in their speech and understood as an urging for it, it was named so,
وكان البغل إذا سمع باسم حدس طار فرقا فلهج الناس بذلك، والمعروف عند الناس عدس؛
And the mule, when it heard the name hadas, would fly in fear, so people became accustomed to that, and what is known among people is 'adas;
فقال: عدس، ما لعباد عليك إمارة، ... نجوت وهذا تحملين طليق
So he said: 'Adas, you have no authority over 'Abbad, ... you have escaped and this one you carry is free
أتغضب أن يقال: أبوك عف، ... وترضى أن يقال: أبوك زاني؟
Would you be angry if it is said: Your father is chaste, ... and would you be pleased if it is said: Your father is an adulterer?
وأشهد أن رحمك من زياد ... كرحم الفيل من ولد الأتان
And I bear witness that your lineage from Ziyad ... is like the lineage of an elephant from the offspring of a female donkey
